The Coconut EST Grove Garden Club Our mission is one of Community Outreach and Involvement through Fraternity and Gardening. We support Sustainable Lifestyles through Education and Participation in the defense against waste of our country s natural resources, its soil, minerals, flora, waters and wildlife. Thanksgiving Feasting & Fancy These holiday table ideas remind us that you can do some really fun things with squash! It s in season, it s delicious, it s nutritious and it s beautiful. Squash can be sliced, diced, baked, flaked, steamed, creamed, shredded, breaded, fried, pie-ed, or raw in slaw! Squash, being a perfect complement to any dish, can also serve as an addition to your home holiday decor. The color palette of the squash is across the board - and each beautiful Cucurbitaceae is unique in its colorful appearance and taste. So, go for it with the gourds! Decorate with it, eat it, or send some to a friend! Happy Thanksgiving.

Message From The President EST Dear Gardeners, This is the season of Thanksgiving. In Spanish, I believe that it is expressed as acción de gracias. The idea that action is associated with giving thanks is a vital one. Take action to express your gratitude for our luxuriant environment and our enriching friendships. I hope you all are enjoying the crisp cool in the weather as much as I am. As autumn deepens, we look forward to coming together for our most festive times of the year. I am excited in anticipation of our Holiday Party at Françoise Ibars lovely home. Heather Wulkan is enthusiastically coordinating the event and would appreciate any stragglers to promptly remit their checks to her. I so look forward to seeing all of you there with your loved ones to celebrate this season of giving, love and peace. Warmest Holiday Wishes, Jean Anne Davis

Blessing St. Stephen s Meditative Labyrinth EST Reverend Jo Ann Murphy, Bishop Peter Eaton and Rev.Willie Allen-Faiella presided over the blessing and official opening of the Meditative Labyrinth at St. Stephens Episcopal Church in Coconut Grove on October 21st in a late afternoon ceremony and reception following the consecration. A pet project in perpetuity for the, the Labyrinth represents a public respite for passers by and members of the community to walk the labyrinth in peaceful meditation. We are so pleased to have been included in this community contribution to the peace and beautification of such a prominent symbol of the heart of Coconut Grove.

RSVP: megaflowersmiami@bellsouth.net Bring your gloves, your Holiday Spirit and perhaps a bottle of your favorite wine or some nibbles. Robert is so generous with his time and effort towards the ; Let s lighten his load and get a gaggle of do-gooders together for some giggles and gossamer!

Many Thanks Many thanks to Director Craig Morell, of our beloved Kampong, for sharing his ever-genial and complete expertise regarding the site at our November 11 th meeting at the homestead. EST In my mind, it s always a beautiful day at the Kampong. However, in the wake of Hurricane Irma, the damage to the property and its precious species, mangroves, hammocks and surrounding environmentally sensitive areas are of great concern to any environmentalist. It was a heartbreaking reveal to realize how hard a job it s going to be to support the recovery of our beautiful garden. Dr. Morell reflected on the destruction and massive clean-up involved following Irma and the speed with which the garden is recovering at present. There is still much to be done. Call the Kampong office and see what you might be able to offer in the way of a hand or sign up for a membership! (305)

EST Sandra Farwell s Garden My Choice for Plant of the Month is the Michelia Champaca Alba. The Michelia champaca 'Alba' is absolutely the most exclusive perfume tree on the planet. This is the 'alba' of JOY Perfume world fame, the world's most expensive perfume. The Alba is a robust grower with large beautiful glossy green leaves. Mature, it may reach feet in South Florida. It has no pests and is evergreen. Mine lost no branches in the hurricane and is blooming now. If you have the space, a must have is either the Michelia champaca alba or the Ylang-Ylang. Your sunny beds should contain mildly acidic soil and don t require much watering until the summer months. Additional notes: Please begin to think now about the Plant Exchange which we usually have in March. Plants that people have enjoyed in previous years include bromeliads, interesting ferns, philodendrons/alocasias, orchids, crotons, begonias and flowering shrubs. Look around your gardens and think about plants that you love. Can you take cuttings, air layers or runners from these plants? This is the time to take these babies and put them into potting mix. We all love plants that are already rooted-in and sizable enough to see what they are going to

EST look like. If everyone brought along five really special plants we d have a great Plant Exchange. This is a great time to do it, too, because many of our plants have put on a surge of growth post-hurricane so we have been thinning or cutting things back. Some of the things I plan to plant include angel hair ferns, selaginella, orchids, firespike, brownea, crotons and bromeliads. Tomato plants should have been started in September or October and should be well along the way by now. Mine are behind schedule since my new seedlings were eaten as they came out of the ground (rats, snails, other critters, I was never able to determine). I had to replant the seeds and take the seedlings inside every night (as that is when the annihilation was taking place). We ll see if they can catch up in time to produce fruit before the heat gets too intense next year. That s it for now. If you have any questions regarding your gardens or specific plants, I ll be happy to try to help. Just give a shout. Happy gardening! Member Profile By Geraldine Smith When Barbara Barnard, my co-chairman, and I met with Mary Ann Gibbs there were two things that were immediately felt. First, Mary Ann and her husband, Tucker, are Grooving Grovers personified! They have been working and continue to work to make Coconut Grove the place we all love. Second, Mary Ann is a consummate gardener. Mary Ann was born in Chicago of Mexican parents. She moved to Miami in the Fall of1986 and began working as local government reporter for the Miami Herald in1988. She met her husband while she was working there.

She wrote "stories" and he was her "source." EST When they realized that their relationship was developing into something more than business, she told him that if it continued he could no longer be her "source." Thankfully he made the right choice! He asked her to marry him when they were walking on the beach in Miami Beach. They were married in1988 and have one daughter. Mary Ann joined the Coconut Grove Garden Club in Her sponsor is Barbara Barnard. She is very active in the Inquisitive Gardeners group. Because she is a writer, she works with Margaret Hoeveler and Andrea Clement whenever they need her help. She said that she enjoys being a member of the Coconut Grove Garden Club because she enjoys being around people who have a passion for gardening as dedicated as her own. Mary Ann is always interesting and is a caring friend to be around. Please make an effort to get to know her. You ll be happy that you did!

EST Next Meeting January 11, :30 am Social 10:00 am Meeting and Program Speaker: Topic: Where: RSVP: Steven Brooke, Fellow, American Academy in Rome. Adjunct Professor, UM School of Architecture. The History of the Depiction of Landscape Architecture The Home of Martha Mensch 6209 Granada Boulevard, Coral Gables, FL Inquisitive Gardeners By Mary Ann Gibbs In October the Inquisitive Gardeners visited the lovely new Coral Gables home of Brian Molloy. The group gathered to advise him on how to restore the green privacy hedge along his backyard property line that was damaged by Hurricane Irma. Brian, a longtime Coconut Grove Garden Club member, settled on planting along the back fence several Simpson and Spanish Stoppers and Crabwoods, all

EST native tall bushes to small trees that will hide his neighbors houses while providing food and shelter for wildlife. We had a great time when the Inquisitive Gardeners visited me, Brian said. I got some excellent advice on how to solve my back-fence problem and then we enjoyed a delicious lunch. The Inquisitive Gardeners steered me in the direction of native plants, and I was able to get reacquainted with the folks at Plant Creations, a native plant nursery that has helped me in the past. There I selected some great tall stoppers. I m still looking for some Saw Palmetto for my front and back yards. The next meeting of the Inquisitive Gardeners will be on Monday, November 13th, at 12:30 pm, at the home of Garden Club member Lisa Remeny. To join the group, Andrea Clement at andreaclement@bellsouth.net to be added to the group's mailing list. As a matter of courtesy and efficiency, the will expect an RSVP from each member who plans to attend a meeting or an event. It s a tremendous effort for each gathering to be hosted without a snag and we owe it to our committees and hosts to respect this effort and keep them in sync with the needs of the day. 2pollyedwards@gmail.com.
