6 WESTERN REGION HIGHER ED PROJECT EXPERIENCE University of California, Davis, CA Fire Protection Engineering Services Under a Consultant Agreement with UC Davis, Hughes provided fire protection engineering services for campus renovation and new construction projects. Work has included the following projects: Physics/Geology Building Renovation Fire Alarm Design We provided fire alarm system replacement design and construction period services for this multi-story non-high rise instructional and laboratory facility. Tercero Housing Code Consulting Services Code consulting services were provided to resolve a stair enclosure issue encountered during construction at UC Davis student housing project. Wickson Hall Fire Protection Design Hughes provided the design layout of new duct detectors for air handling units in the basement and four additional devices at the 3rd floor. Mrak Hall Code Consulting Services Building code consulting services were provided to address the "smokeproof enclosure" requirements at the time of original construction. The five-story office building was designed and constructed in the 1960's in accordance with the 1961 Uniform Building Code. Leach Hall Fire Protection Design The design of replacement fire alarm systems was provided for 6 similar two-story dormitory buildings collectively referred to as Leach Hall. Thoreau Hall Fire Sprinkler Systems Hughes conducted an assessment of the existing automatic sprinkler system for evaluation of a malfunctioning water flow switch. Existing automatic sprinkler system shop drawings were reviewed and a determination was made of the cause for delay in the response time of the water flow switch and corrective recommendations were developed. 7 LaRue Hall Plan Review Services Hughes provided plan review services for the automatic sprinkler systems and fire alarm systems throughout the LaRue Housing project. Center for the Performing Arts Code Consulting Services Hughes provided fire protection and life safety code consulting services to the University to address and respond to several code issues that arose late in the design process. Veterinary Medicine Building Code Consulting Hughes provided code consulting for the veterinary medicine classroom building for UC Davis. University of California, San Diego, CA Rady School of Management Security System Consulting Under a Consultant Agreement with UC Davis, Hughes provided fire protection engineering services for campus renovation and new construction projects. University of California, Los Angeles, CA Hughes provided fire protection engineering services for UCLA. Work has included the following projects: Campus Wide Fire Alarm Study and Central Reporting System The design of replacement fire alarm systems was provided for 6 similar two-story dormitory buildings collectively referred to as Leach Hall. Center for Health Sciences Complex Fire Protection Engineering Services Performed an egress analysis, developed an egress plan, prepared design documents and CPS for backbone fire sprinkler, standpipe, and fire alarm upgrades. Hughes also prepared construction documents for a fire pump room, fire water storage tanks, and fire command center and analyzed existing and future zoning of fire alarm, sprinklers, and HVAC systems. Nanosystems Institute Fire Protection and Code Consulting Hughes provided fire protection design analysis and code consulting for the new 157,000 sq. ft. University laboratory building. The building is four stories above grade and three basement levels below grade. A Fire Safety Analysis was prepared which included a determination of occupancy classification, building code analysis, relationship to adjacent existing structures, fire department access, and atria issues. 8 University of California, Berkeley, CA Hughes provided fire protection engineering services for UC Berkeley. Work has included the following projects: Wurster Hall Fire Protection and Life Safety Consulting Hughes provided fire protection and life safety consulting services for the $20M seismic safety upgrade to the fire protection and life safety systems in Wurster Hall. Wee participated as part of the design team providing building code consulting services and negotiations with the fire officials to determine the appropriate fire protection and life safety upgrades within the existing building. We also offered input to the design team regarding the fire suppression system and fire alarm system design criteria for the complete retrofit of these systems within the building. Anna Head Complex Fire Protection and Life Safety Consulting Hughes provided building code related fire protection and life safety consulting services for the Anna Head complex upgrade study at UC Berkeley. The Anna Head complex was a six-building complex, consisting of two- and three- story structures, that is bordered by Channing Way, Bowditch Street and Haste Street. California Hall - Hughes provided code consulting services for California Hall, a historic building with non-historic interiors and exiting syste University of California, Santa Cruz, CA College 9 Housing Fire Protection and Life Safety Consulting Services Hughes participated as part of the design team providing building code consulting services and negotiations with the fire officials to determine the appropriate fire protection and life safety upgrades within the existing building. We also offered input to the design team regarding the fire suppression system and fire alarm system design criteria for the complete retrofit of these systems within the building. Stanford University, Palo Alto, CA Toyon Hall Fire & Life Safety Code Consulting Hughes provided fire and life safety code consulting services for this historic dormitory renovation project. Toyon Hall was built in the 1920 s and includes a large assembly space on the ground floor. An assessment was made of the fire protection systems and egress capabilities and recommendations were made to provide adequate fire safety and preserve the historic features, such as operable transoms, of the building. 9 Roble Hall Fire & Life Safety Consulting Hughes evaluated the fire-rating of the floor ceiling assembly for use in area currently under renovation at Stanford University s Roble Hall. The floor ceiling assembly was evaluated for compliance with a 1 hour fire rated UL listed assembly. GSB Library, Bass Center Smoke Control System Commissioning Hughes provided commissioning services for the 5-story atrium located in the Graduate School of Business Library located in the Bass Center. The primary features of the atrium smoke control system that were commissioned and analyzed were: Four 50,000 cfm exhaust fans on the roof, two make-up air double doors and sixteen make-up air transoms on the 1 st floor; six make-up air windows and sixteen make-up air transoms on the 2 nd floor. Hughes verified the values outlined in the Smoke Control Report and prepared a Final Commissioning Report. GSB Residential Building Code Consulting and Construction Administration Services Hughes provided fire/life safety and accessibility code consulting services for the schematic design, design development, and construction documents, bid/permit, construction administration and closeout services for a new 4-story residential building with approx. 120,000 sq. ft. in gross floor area. The building accommodates 200 single occupancy units with private entrances and individual bath facilities. Each unit has shared or private kitchen facilities. The building also accommodates up to three tiered classrooms with forty person capacity, some distance learning/space/studio, one large flexible conference room for up to people which can be divided, lounges/courtyard space, gym, reception desk and office area. New Stanford Hospital Fire & Life Safety Code Consulting Hughes provided fire and life safety consulting services for the new Stanford Hospital. Stanford Law School Fire Protection Engineering Services Hughes assisted with resolving outstanding fire and life safety issues related to the roof design assembly over the clinic area of the Stanford School of Law building. Anderson Galleries Building Fire & Life Safety Consulting Hughes provided fire and life safety consulting services for the new Anderson Galleries Building at Stanford University. San Jose State University, San Jose, CA Hughes provided fire protection engineering services for San Jose State University. Work has included the following projects: 10 th Street Garage Conversion of First Story from Parking to Office Space. Hughes provided fire protection and life safety related code consulting for conversion of the first story from parking garage to office space. An exit analysis was conducted of the first story and a red-lined document was prepared for the architect. We performed a smoke bomb test to verify the performance of the system using hot smoke test apparatus. Mt. San Antonio College, Walnut, CA Administration Building Code Consulting Services Hughes provided code consulting services to review renovation drawings for an administration building at Mt. San Antonio College. Harbor College, San Pedro, CA Learning Resource Center Security System Design Hughes provided complete security design engineering and construction period services for this new, three story, 52K sq.ft. library/research center. Systems include integrated intrusion, access. CCTV and electronic article surveillance Mills College, Oakland, CA Music/Theater Building Life Safety Upgrades Hughes provided consulting services for the life safety systems upgrade for the historic theater renovation project on Mills College campus. 11 University of Colorado, Boulder, CO Hughes continues to provide fire protection engineering services for numerous campus facilities. Projects completed and on-going projects include the following: Norlin Library - Fire Alarm System We provided fire alarm system design for this 350,000 square foot main library for the campus. Extensive site inspections were performed to evaluate the condition of the existing fire alarm system for overall application and for ability to re-use existing devices, conduit or wiring. Detailed design drawings and specifications were prepared in compliance with all applicable codes for retrofit installation of a new addressable type fire alarm system. Design drawings were prepared to a shop drawing level for the contractor to use as installation drawings. The design included interface with existing building equipment for elevator recall, fan shutdown, security lock release and central station reporting. The design included interface/communicate with the existing campus network system. We reviewed contractor bids for compliance with design documents and general cost and system manufacturers comparison. Awarded contractor submittals were reviewed in detail to ensure compliant application of the system components. Our engineers conducted a test of the complete system and prepared a report of findings identifying items to complete in preparation for the acceptance test by the Authorities of Jurisdiction. Contractor asbuilt record drawings were reviewed and approved for submission to the owner for their records. Joint Institute for Laboratory Astrophysics (JILA) - Fire Sprinkler and Detection System Design Hughes provided fire suppression and detection system design services for this existing laboratory. System designs accounted for the unique and high value electronic prevalent in the laboratories. Design also included necessary integration between the fire suppression, fire detection and mechanical systems within the building. We created design documents for bidding purposes that included suppression, fire alarm and detection, electrical systems, and architectural components. Construction administration included managing with the bidding process, reviewing contractor generated shop drawings, chaired bi-weekly weekly construction meetings, conducting field surveys, and managed the final acceptance inspection and testing process. Center for Astrophysics and Space Technology (CASA) - Fire Sprinkler Design We provided fire suppression design services for the addition to this research facility. Scope of services included field survey to evaluate existing conditions, review as-built plans and water supply, and providing design documents for bidding purposes. Construction administration included assisting with the bidding process, reviewing contractor generated shop drawings, conducting field surveys, and overseeing the final acceptance inspection and testing process. 12 Chemistry Building - Review of Halon System A review was made of the halon system for code compliance and possible replacement. A report was generated outline existing conditions, minimum code requirements, hazard analysis of each area of the facility, and recommendations for halon replacement. Cogeneration Power Facility - Fire Protection Design Analysis HAI reviewed fire protection system design drawings and specifications (initial and final) for the University campus power plant building. Campus Wide - Other Fire Prevention & Life Safety Services Oversight of the Campus Fire Alarm System Network installation Review and Inspection of the Duane Physics Fire Alarm System Review and Inspection of the Museum Collections project Review and Inspection of the Discovery Learning Center project Options for Campus Mass Notification System Brigham Young University, Provo, UT Hughes continues to provide fire protection engineering services for numerous BYU campus facilities. Projects completed include the following: Campus Wide - Campus Access Control System Complete design and engineering services were supplied for a 10-building access control system and a six-building access control system (700,000 square feet). Support was provided for bidding and bid negotiations. Services included construction period services. Campus Wide - Security Consulting Services Security design and engineering services were provided for the modernization and expansion of campus security systems. Helaman Halls - Access Control Project Comprehensive security design and engineering services were provided for this eight-building, BYU Housing Access Control Upgrade project (370,000 square feet). Site visits were conducted to validate security systems for replacement. Layouts were prepared of all recommended security devices and low voltage power requirements. Technical specifications and equipment data sheets were provided. Construction cost estimates were developed for the proposed system. Work included bid support, bid negotiations and construction period services. LaVell Edward Stadium - Homeland Security Improvements A security assessment was performed for the LaVell Edwards Stadium (65,000 seat capacity) and Marriott Center Arena (22,000 seat capacity) to serve as a basis for design report for future Homeland Security improvements. Areas of focus included CPTED assessment, lighting/landscape, and physical and electronic security countermeasures. Page 10
