2 Standardization in India Indian standards institution (ISI) was established as a registered society in 1947 which led to organized standardization activity in India Product certification scheme launched in , under certification mark act, 1952 Bureau of Indian standards (BIS) took over work of ISI through enactment of BIS act (1986) by the Indian parliament. VISION The BUREAU OF INDIAN STANDARDS (BIS), the national standards body of India, resolves to be the leader in all matters concerning standardization, certification and quality. ISI

5 Development of Indian Standards BIS as the National Standards Body is engaged in the formulation of Indian Standards in various areas of science and technology. There standards are developed by relevant technical committees comprising of representatives of various stakeholder interests such as industry, consumer, technologists, scientists, professionals, academicians, government policy makers, regulators. Standardization is a collaborative effort and its success largely depends on the participation and contribution of the members of the concerned technical committees. Further, for standards to be relevant it is also important that viewpoints of all interested stakeholders are brought on board and duly considered while building consensus on the standard being developed.

6 Development of Indian Standards BIS is engaged in the activities of formulating Indian standards in various fields through sectional committees under 14 division councils in all engineering and non- engineering fields. The Indian standards cover product specifications, methods of tests, codes of practice, glossaries of terms etc. One of the division council is petroleum, coal and related products division council (PCDC) The standardization work related to petroleum, coal & related products is carried out through 15 different sectional committees under the petroleum, coal and related products division council (PCDC) of BIS.

8 National Standardization on Rubber and Rubber Products At the national level, rubber and rubber products sectional committee, PCD 13 & method of test for rubber and rubber products sectional committee, PCD 29 carries out the standardization activities in the field of rubber and rubber products.

9 Method of Test for Rubber and Rubber Products Sectional Committee, PCD 29 SCOPE : To formulate Indian standards for terminology, methods of sampling and test, codes of practice and environmental aspects of rubber and rubber products. 15 International Standardization Activity- ISO ISO is an independent, non-governmental international organization with a membership of 160 national standards bodies. Through its members, it brings together experts to share knowledge and develop voluntary, consensus-based, market relevant international standards that support innovation and provide solutions to global challenges. There are 783 technical committees and subcommittees.the international standardization activities in the field of rubber and rubber products is being carried out by ISO/TC 45 through its subcommittees and working groups. India is 'participating member' of this technical committee. India has been actively participating in ISO/TC 45 meetings regularly since long.

17 ISO/TC 45/SC 2 Testing and Analysis 127 ISO standards are published and 21 are under development 24 Participating countries. India is participating member. Scope Standardization of methods for physical testing and chemical analysis of rubbers and thermoplastic elastomers, materials and products, including application of statistical methods. Excluded are, unless otherwise agreed, tests specific to one product as well as chemical analysis of raw materials.

23 Harmonization of Indian Standards with ISO standards With WTO-TBT regimes of global trade, the national and international standards act as the most efficient regulator or screen to protect the interest of Indian industry and economy. 45 % Indian standards related to test methods are harmonized with ISO standards.
