Chapter President Jennifer Riviere and SEIU supporters in the office of State Sen. Lois Wolk One of the most cherished services in our communities one that provides access to information for children, seniors and families is under attack. The privatization of library services is rearing its ugly head throughout California as politicians look deeper for ways to slash local government budgets. In presentations, private companies claim privatization brings savings, but undisclosed costs actually increase expenses, making it more expensive than what it's replacing. The City of Santa Clarita was promised savings but ended up with $12 million in new costs instead. SEIU members across the state descended upon Sacramento last week to send a clear sign to legislators that the promises made by private companies need to incorporate safeguards before such a valuable community asset is
2 promises made by private companies need to incorporate safeguards before such a valuable community asset is privatized. Members met with legislators asking them to support AB438, a bill that establishes clear, common-sense standards for privatization of libraries, including: 1. Adequate notice 2. Proof that there will be actual savings 3. Required audits to verify spending 4. The ability to end the contract if the privatization does not work 5. Protections for quality services and programs. AB438 is the only way to protect taxpayers and the public as communities consider library privatization. SEIU speaks up for libraries in Sacramento (video) Community joins SEIU 1021 Courts workers calling for judicial accountability Community supporters and advocates joined SEIU 1021 court employees on the steps of Mendocino Superior Courthouse last week to call on court officials to implement more financial checks and balances in the system. About 200 people chanted songs calling for more accountability and members exposed multiple cash advances by court officials, the abrupt departure of the CEO and a number of other financial red flags that justify their calls for an immediate audit. The court has not been audited since Members also called into question the need for more cuts to staff while managers keep getting hired and the manager-staff ratio now has every manager supervising approximately two workers. These questionable practices come on the heels of a scathing audit conducted by the Bureau of State Audits, charging the Administrative Office of the Courts the body responsible for oversight in Mendocino with lack of planning, lack of accountability, and financial mismanagement that has cost taxpayers more than a billion dollars in cost overruns. The Live Wire Talk Back to Chuck: "You owe us!" Pictured: Demonstrators singing "Stuck in a Bad Hotel" to the tune of Lady Gagaʼs Stuck in a Bad Romance On the very afternoon Standard and Poor downgraded America's credit rating from AAA for the first time in history, several hundred housing and union activists including members of SEIU 1021 took to the streets of San to place the blame for the country's economic woes on the banksters and Wall Street speculators who caused the crisis and now profit from it at the expense of working people and the middle class. The demonstrators gathered at swank Union Square, their picket signs, bullhorns and chants a jarring intrusion on the shoppers and tourists. The spokespeople for the sponsoring organizations outlined the day's visits and their concerns: foreclosures, housing, Social Security, jobs, and livable wages.
3 "When do the people get bailed out?" Robbie Clark of the housing organization Just Cause asked the crowd, referring to the taxpayer bailout of the financial firms that caused the Wall Street crash. "Government is not making the banks accountable, so we will." Read the full story on The Live Wire. This Week on 1021 Twitter 1) Seeing the Forest: "Rich Guy "Deeply Resents" Helping Pay For Democracy" 2) Seeing the Forest: "A Summer Of People's Action Is Barely Reported But Building!" 3) Huffington Post: "Amnesty for the Indefensible" "It is of concern to the [banking] industry that instead of trying to facilitate resolving these issues, you seem to be throwing a wrench into it. Wall Street is our Main Street love 'em or hate 'em. They are important and we have to make sure we are doing everything we can to support them unless they are doing something indefensible." Kathryn S. Wylde, a member of the board of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, quoted in the story Follow SEIU 1021 on Twitter Act! Here! Now! Labour's Love's Lost: Heart a public service worker on Labor Day It's been a tough year for America's workers, and they need some love. So this Labor Day, the AFL-CIO is urging everyone to "HEART a Worker" via Facebook and Twitter and let the public know how important hardworking women and men are in our daily lives. Here's how it works: Beginning Aug. 29, the Labor Day splash page at will enable visitors to share a message that answers the question: Who do you HEART this Labor Day? Options include "I HEART Cooks," "I HEART Firefighters" and so on; visitors are free to customize the type of worker they HEART. After they fill in the type of worker, they can share the message on their Facebook wall and via Twitter with one or two quick clicks. We HEART Public Service Workers Follow your HEART with "Public Service Workers" or "Clerks" or "Maintenance Operators" or whatever it is that you do. The more we share the action with family and friends, the more the "I HEART a Worker" action will spread the word about the public services we provide and why they're so important. As we approach the 10th anniversary of 9/11, the action also honors the many first responders and the thousands who worked so hard in the days and months after the tragedy to care for the injured and do the laborious work
