Scopz: Tile selection and installation of pumps supplying water for private fire protection, including suction piping, valves and auxiliary equipment; operafinn and maintenance: electric driving and control; steam turbine and internal combustion engine driving and control equipment. This report has been submitted to ballot of the Committee on Fire Pumps which" consists of 21 voting members of whom 20 have voted affirmatively. One member has not returned his ballot. The Committee on Fire Pumps presents for official adoption amendments to the Standard for the Installation of Centrifugal Fire Pumps, NFPA No. 20. NFPA No. 20 is published in the National Fire Codes, Volume 6 and in separate pamphlet form.
2 552 FP-2 AMENDMENTS TO NFPA NO. 20 Proposed Amendments to Standard for the Installation of Centrifugal Fire Pumps NFPA, No. 20~ b. Retain the heading of the paragraph but chvmge the definition to read: b. LoW-PRESSURE FIRE PUMPS (BOOSTER PUMPS) Pumps made in standard capacities, 250 to 2,500 gallons per minute and designed to produce rated pressures in the range of 40 to 100 psi d. The heading of this paragraph is to be retained but the wording is to be changed to read: d. PRESSURE MAINTENANCE PUMPS (JOCKEY OR MAKE-UP PUMPS) -- The use of an automatic pressure maintenance pump is desirable under some circumstances to maintain a uniform or a relatively high pressure on the fire protection system. The capacity and pressure rating of the pump shall be sufficient to maintain the desired pressure against the leakage in the system as approved by the authority having, jurisdiction. A centrifugal type pump is preferable. Where the discharge pressure at pump shutoff of a centrifugal type pump exceeds the working pressure rating of the fire protection equipment, or a turbine vane (peripheral) or a positive displacement type of pump is used, a suitable relief valve shall be installed on the pump discharge to prevent damage to the fire system. (See Fig. ures 100a-1 and 143e.) e.. In order to clarify the intent of this paragraph, revise the last line as follows: "Should be installed with a by-pass (Fig. 143e, Appendix-C)." 4. Figure 143e. Change the caption for this figure to read: "Schematic Diagram of the Suggested Arrangement for a Booster Pump with a by-pass" In the first sentence of the note which follows Section 431, insert the word "monetary '' before the word "values" so that the note will begin as follows: "Where the dollar values involved..." a. Clarify the intent of this paragraph by deleting the last four words which are "by the load carried" Replace the word "overcurrent" with the words "power supply" in the heading of this section so that it reads POWER SUPPLY PROTECTIVE DEVICES (Fuses or Circuit Breakers).

Such devices when installed in the power supply circuits at utility plants, substations, or plant load distribution centers ahead of the fire pump feeder circuits shall hold indefinitely stalled rotor current conditions of the fire pump motor(s) under maximum plant load b. Reword as follows: b. Such devices (fuses not recommended) when installed in the fire pump feeder circuit shall hold indefinitely stalled rotor current of the fire pump motor(s) and other necessary associated fire pump installation electrical accessories The note at the end of this section should be v'evised to read as follows: NOTE: Each ungrounded conductor should be protected. See also Paragraph 514b. I1. 451c. Revise as follows: c. Squirrel-cage induction motors should have normal starting and breakdown torque. The locked rotor current of three-phase, constant-speed, induction motors, measured with rated voltage and frequency impressed with rotor locked, shall not exceed the following values: NEC Code Letter Locked-Rotor Current 250 Volts ~80 Volts Rated Three-Phase A to and A to and Horsepower ~0 or ~80 Volts Including Including 5 92 H J H H G H G G F G F G F G F G F G F G F G F G F G F F G G NOTE 1: In the foregoing table the locked rotor currents are for motors rated at 220 or 230 volts. They are approximately six times the full-load current. The corresponding values of locked rotor current for motors rated 'at other voltages shall be determined by multiplication of the values shown by the following factors :
4 554 FP-4 AMENDMENTS TO NKPA NO. 20 Rated Voltage Factor 208 Volts or 460 Volts or 575 Volts 0.4 Any' other Voltage Ratio of 230 volts to the rated voltage. (For example: a 15 H.P., 460 Volt motor would have a value of 116 amperes)." NOTE 2: Code letters of motors rated for 440 or 550 volts shall conform with those shown for 220 Volts. Code letters of motors rated for 208 Volts, 460 Volts, 575 Volts and all other Voltages shall conform with those shown for 230 Volts b. In the portion of this paragraph that deals with direct surrent motors, change the item which pertains to temperature and speed to two items which read as follows: "Temperature rise or class of insulation and ambient temperature" followed by a second item which reads: "RPM at full load" b. The word "positive" should be inserted before the word "pressure" in the second line of this.paragraph b-7(a). Eliminate "'Code F" from the fourth line d-2. Delete the last seven words of this subparagraph so that the last sentence will read: "The relay shall be actuated from a normally closed contact on the fire protection equipment." a. In the last sentence of this paragraph add the word "pump" before the word "speed" and before the word "load" so that the sentence reads as follows: "It shall be set to maintain rated pump speed at rated pump load." Revise to make 626a and b: 626. STORAGE BATTERY. a. GENERAL. The battery shall have sufficient ca- pacity, at 40~ to maintain the engine manufacturers recommended.cranking speed during the following 6 minute cycle (15 seconds crank and 15 seconds rest in 12 consecutive cycles). The fire pump manufacturer shall provide a certification that the battery which was furnished complies with this requirement. b. LEAD Acre. Batteries shall be furnished in a dry charge condition with electrolyte liquid in separate container. Electrolyte should be added at the time the unit is put into service. The battery shall then be given a conditioning charge to bring the electrolyte up to its designated specific gravity.

Outside gas pipe to be iron or steel: indoor pipe to be steel, wrought iron, copper or brass. 2. Outside valve needed on pipe over 2Y2 in. diameter. 3. Approved gas valve locked open or supervised. 4. Approved, electric-opening, self-closing valve. 5. Install as close to engine as possible. 6. Valve to be provided with visual or audible signal to show when it is open.
6 556 FP-6 AMENDMENTS TO NFPA NO ~a. Add a note at the end of this paragraph which reads as follows: NOTE: Allow 12 cubic feet of 1,000 BTU natural gas per horsepower per hour d. Change the first sentence of this paragraph to read: "There shall be an electric-opening, self-closing safety shutoff valve installed in the fuel line on the engine." Change the second sentence of this paragraph to read as follows: "A seamless or welded corrugated (not interlocked) flexible connection shall be made between the engine exhaust outlet and the exhaust pipe." 26. Page The heading at the top of the page should be changed to read as follows: "INTERNAL COM- BUSTION ENGINE DRIVE" b. Insert the word "positive" before the word "pressure" in the second line of this paragraph d. Revise this paragraph as follows: (d) LOCKS: All switches required to keep the controller in the "automatic" position shall be within locked cabinets having break glass panels b-2. Revise this item to read as follows: "Controller main switch has been turned to 'off' or 'manual' position. (Separate signal.)" e-1. Change the first sentence of this subparagraph to read as follows: "Two storage batteries, each complying wittt the requirements of Section 626, shall be provided and so arranged that manual and automatic starting of the equipment can be accomplished with either battery f-3. Revise this item to read as follows: 3. Anti-Dieseling. Circuits shall be provided in the controller to operate anti-dieseling devices where required on gasoline engines (see Section 629). 32, 715g. Eliminate the "1" from the text, because there is only one paragraph Add the following paragraph to this section: c.
