1 Selection Guide and Product Data This section has two parts: A Selection Guide that walks you through the process of selecting the correct VTP device for a circuit. Product Data that outlines electrical characteristics, physical characteristics, agency recognition, environmental specifications, and ordering information for VTP devices. VTP Selection Guide Follow these seven steps to select a PolySwitch VTP device for a circuit: 1. Define the operating parameters for the circuit. These include: Maximum internal battery pack operating temperature during normal charge/discharge Maximum battery pack charge/discharge current during normal operation Maximum operating voltage Maximum interrupt current 2. Select the VTP device that accommodates the circuit s maximum ambient operating temperature and normal operating current. 3. Compare the VTP device s maximum operating voltage and maximum interrupt current with the circuit s to be sure the circuit does not exceed the device ratings.. Check the VTP device s time-to-trip to be sure it will protect the circuit. 5. Verify that the circuit s ambient operating temperatures are within the VTP device s operating temperature range. 6. Verify that the VTP device s dimensions fit the application s space considerations. 7. Independently evaluate and test the suitability and performance of the VTP device in the application. 2 1. Define the circuit s operating parameters. Fill in the following information about the circuit: Maximum internal battery pack operating temperature Normal charge/discharge current Maximum operating voltage Maximum interrupt current 2. Select the PolySwitch VTP device that will accommodate the circuit s maximum internal battery pack operating temperature and normal operating current. Look across the top of the table on the next page to find the temperature that most closely matches the maximum internal battery pack operating temperature experienced during normal charge/discharge. Look down column one to find the value equal to or greater than the maximum battery pack charge/discharge current during normal operation. At the intersection of the current and the temperature you will find the VTP device that will provide the fastest trip time for a given fault condition. If a longer reaction time or a lower resistance is desired, select a device with a higher hold current. If the operating current or temperature falls between the values shown on the table, choose the next highest value for operating current or temperature. Prismatic packs VTP210 devices feature a low-profile form factor for use with prismatic packs. These devices are also available in a slitted lead version. These designs have a slit in one of the leads to facilitate welding of the device to the positive terminal and are identified by the S designation (such as VTP210S). AAA Cell packs VTP170 devices feature a unique small axial strap form factor for use with AAA cell packs. 266 VTP Devices Raychem Circuit Protection Devices

Hold current for two devices in parallel will be less than two times the hold current of one device. In order to minimize interactions, thermally separate the parts as much as possible. 4 3. Compare maximum operating voltages and maximum interrupt currents. Look down the first column of the table below to find the part number you selected in Step 2. Look to the right in that row to find the device s maximum operating voltage (V max.) and maximum interrupt current (I max.). Compare both ratings with the circuit s to be sure the circuit s rating does not exceed that of the VTP device. Maximum device voltages and currents Part V max. 5 . Determine time-to-trip. Time-to-trip is the amount of time it takes for a device to switch to a highresistance state once a fault current has been applied through the device. Identifying the VTP device s time-to-trip is important in order to provide the desired protection capabilities. If the device you choose trips too fast, undesired or nuisance tripping will occur. If the device trips too slowly, the components being protected may be damaged before the device switches to a high-resistance state. The chart below shows the typical time-to-trip at 25 C for each PolySwitch VTP device. For example, the chart indicates that the typical time-to-trip for VTP210 at 10 A is 1.7 seconds. Typical time-to-trip curve (25 C) A = VTP210 B = VTP Time-to-trip (s) B A Fault current (A) 100 Raychem Circuit Protection Devices VTP Devices 269
6 5. Verify ambient operating conditions. Ensure that your application s minimum and maximum ambient temperatures are within the operating temperature range of -0 C to 85 C. The maximum surface temperature of the device in the tripped state is 110 C. 6. Verify the VTP device s dimensions Using dimensions from the table below, compare the dimensions of the VTP device you selected with the application s space considerations.
