2 INTRODUCTION In the event of any disaster, or potential disaster, the safety and welfare of the students is to be regarded as paramount in determining any action to be taken. 11 9. Evacuation plan Recommended Steps for Evacuation 1. Senior person on site takes charge and decides who does what (activate your ICS); 2. Call 000; 3. Inform Emergency Services of the nature of the emergency (i.e. There is smoke in the building ); 4. Seek advice from ESMU, your Regional Office, Local Government Area or local Diocese. 5. If the decision to evacuate is made, using all available staff/volunteers calmly move/carry/walk the children out of the building; to your pre-determined outdoor assembly area if this is the evacuation option; 6. Take the children s attendance list, staff roster and your Emergency Kit/First Aid kit; 7. Once at assembly area, check all children and staff are accounted for; 8. Call 000 and inform them of your location at the outdoor assembly area; 9. Focus on safety and well-being of staff and children; & 10. Wait for Emergency Services to arrive or for further information.

Keep children quiet. 4 Switch off lights, power and gas, only if safe to do so. 5 PICK UP THE ATTENDANCE ROLL. 6 Evacuate the building from safest possible exit of classroom door or window. 7 Have the children proceed in a quiet and orderly fashion to the designated safe area, such as the asphalt basketball court or Admin building according to Evacuation Map. 8 Principal/Deputy to check all other buildings, only if safe to do so. 9 At the designated safe area CHECK THE ASSEMBLED CHILDREN AGAINST THE ATTENDANCE ROLL. 10 Report to Principal or in their absence the most Senior Teacher. 11 Children remain assembled and supervised. 12 Principal/Deputy contact emergency services. 13 Call the police (Telephone number ) 14 Await instructions of the 0fficer in Charge. 15 Notify DEET, 24 hour COMMUNICATION CENTRE : Notify Regional 0ffice * Arrange manning of phones eg. mobile, cordless, to advise affected parents and for answering enquiries. Keep children quiet. 6 Close windows, switch off lights, power. 7 PICK UP THE ATTENDANCE ROLL. 8 Evacuate if possible the building from safest possible exit of classroom door or window. 9 Have the children proceed in a quiet and orderly fashion to the designated safe area, which is the Administration Building. 10 Principal/ Deputy to activate shutters. 11 At the designated safe area CHECK THE ASSEMBLED CHILDREN AGAINST THE ATTENDANCE ROLL. 12 Report to Principal or in their absence the most Senior Teacher. 13 Children remain assembled and supervised. 14 Principal/Deputy contact emergency services. 15 Assemble personnel with a direct knowledge of : Events Interior layout/topography The hostage(s) OR The assailant(s). 16 Co-operate and assist police as necessary. 17 Complete Siege/Hostage Questionnaire whilst facts are still fresh in your mind. (see Appendix 1) 18 Notify DEET, 24 hour COMMUNICATION CENTRE : Notify CH/WIMMERA REGIONAL OFFICE : * Arrange manning of phones eg. mobile, cordless, to advise affected parents and for answering enquiries. 19 FLOOD 1. At first warning, tune to your radio or television. 2. Be aware of previous flood heights. 3. If sufficient warning, send students home, provided it is safe and transport is available - confer with school bus operator/parents/emergency contact personnel. 4. Decide if school will be held next day. 5. Organise buddy system for pupils stranded by flood for accommodation during emergency. 6. Activate pre-arranged plan for release of staff with homes or property in flood prone areas. 7. Arrange for removal of all floatable articles from school grounds. 8. Arrange for removal or stacking of desks, cupboards, audio visual equipment to a safe area, if possible. 9. Arrange manning of phones eg. mobile, cordless, to advise affected parents and for answering enquiries. 10. Remain tuned to your radio or television until the flood threat has passed and follow any emergency instructions. 11. Evacuate everybody clear of buildings, trees and power lines. 4. Tune into radio and follow any emergency instructions. 5. Ensure building is safe before allowing students to re-enter. 6. Move everybody away from buildings, trees and power lines. When tremor has subsided - 2. Tune into radio and follow any emergency instructions. 3.
