Sour cherry breeding at Research Station Érd of NARIC Fruitculture Research Institute Sándor Szügyi 1, János Apostol 1, Zsuzsanna Rozsnyay 1, Eszter Lantos 2, Éva Sárdi 2 1 National Agricultural Research and Innovation Centre Fruitculture Research Institute, Budapest 2 Corvinus University of Budapest, Faculty of Horticulture, Department of Genetics and Plant Breeding
Introduction - in the last decades sour cherry growing has become a great significance in Hungary - self fertile varieties were introduced into production - cross breeding, selection from the local population (aim: replacing of Pándy ) - resistance breeding program has been started since selected but not applied materials coming from our breeding program could be used as genetic base in our breeding work - gene bank (246 different sour cherry genotypes)
Aims - to select hibrid seedlings resistant or tolerant to Monilinia laxa - to have equal or higher fruit characteristics and productivity of the selected hybrids than Érdi bőtermő variety - to find self fertility - to select Monilina laxa isolates suitable for artificial infections according to their pathogenicity - to separate and quantificate saccharide composition of artificially infected shoots of the most susceptible and most resistant sour cherry hybrids and their parents
Materials Csengődi sour cherry variety
Materials Érdi bőtermő sour cherry variety
Materials Hybrid population of Érdi bőtermő x Csengődi
Methods - Testing pathogenicity of Monilinia laxa isolates - Spontaneous infections in vivo - Artificial infections in vitro - Artificial infections in vivo - Self fertilization - OPLC examinations
phloem necrosis (mm) Results M22 M16 M10 M14 M4 Phloem necrosis of Érdi bőtermő sour cherry variety caused by different M. laxa strains

Results Self fertility of selected sour cherry hybrids (Érd-Elvira major )
average fruit weigh (g) 7/ /91 9/21 9/9-10 7/141 Érdi bőtermő 7/77 7/136 Csengődi 7/47 VI-9/7 9/79-80 Results Average fruit weight of selected sour cherry hybrids (Érd- Elvira major )
Results / / / / / / Csengődi / / / Érdi bőtermő / Ripening time of selected sour cherry hybrids (Érd Elvira major)
Changing of glucose content
Results Érdi bíbor (7/67-68)
Summary - according to artificial and spontaneous in vivo and artificial in vitro infections four hybrids (9/91, 7/67-68, 9/7-8 and 7/136) were selected having similar tolerance like Csengődi variety - among selected hybrids the 9/79-80 and the 7/67-68 hybrids have adequate self fertility - the ripening time of selected hybrids (except for one combination) is earlier than their parents, four of them (7/141; 9/9-10; 7/47; 9/91) are 7-12 days earlier compared to Érdi bőtermő variety - Érdi bíbor (7/67-68) variety were applied for state registration - Based on the experiments performed under non infected conditions glucose content can be mostly associated with the sour cherry s resistance against M. laxa infections
Other candidate varieties Ducat
Other candidate varieties Érdi korai (M221 x Csengődi)
Other candidate varieties Érdi kedves (Pándy x Csengődi)
