2 Ornamental Horticulture Program Research Report Form p 1 Researcher: Gary Chastagner and Annie DeBauw Date: 12/5/2012 Project Title: L-112; IR-4 Efficacy of Management Tools for Botrytis on London Lilies Protocol #: PRnumbers: 30556, 30448, 30480, 30554, 31356, 31360, 31357, 31358, 30449, 31359, 31361, Narrative Summary (Results/Discussion) Please keep text to one page if possible. Include summary of trial results and a brief discussion including how any changes from the protocol may have affected results. Results for multiple PRnumbers can be summarized together, but please list all PRNumbers in the header and in the summary data table. Disease pressure in this field trial was low. Initial treatment applications on the lilies started June 11, 2012 and ended September 7, Disease incidence was rated on a scale of 0 10, where 0 = none, 1 = 1-10%, 2 = 11-20%, and 10 = % of the plants were diseased. By September 19, 2012 (day 100), the average disease incidence rating ranged from 2.3 to 9.5. The ANOVA analysis of data in this test indicated that there was a highly significant (P<0.005) treatment effect on disease incidence (Table 1). Compared to the checks, applications of Palladium and Proud 3 had significantly lower incidence ratings. Treatments had no effect on overall disease severity, which rated the percentage of foliage that was killed on a scale of 0 to 10, plant growth, or the rate of foliage dieback (Table 2). No phototoxicity was observed in this trial. Given that only low levels of disease developed during this trial, additional tests should be conducted to determine the effectiveness of these fungicides in providing acceptable disease control under higher disease pressure.

Include any changes from protocol. Materials & Methods: Bulbs used in this field trial were planted on April 12, Plot layout consisted of 5 rows spaced on 40 centers. Each row contained ten 3-foot-long planting cells with 3 feet between the planted cells. Prior to planting, all cells were fertilized by incorporating Apex lbs. per acre in an 8 to 12-inch wide band just below the soil surface within the rows where the bulbs were to be planted. After placing 48 bulbs in each planting cell, bulbs were treated with an in-furrow 18 wide band of Terraclor at 3 lbs/1000 ft of row prior to hilling to control soil-borne diseases. Treatments were applied on 7, 10 and 14 day intervals starting on June 11, 2012 (Day 0). The average initial height of the plants was taken on Day 0. Three plants from each cell were randomly selected and the height of the plants was measured from the soil line to the top of the plant. Height data was taken again on July 25, 2012 (Day 45) when flowers were in full bloom. Overall disease incidence of whole cells was taken on a bi-weekly basis starting from June 11, 2012 to September 19, 2012 (Day 100). A final disease severity rating and foliage dieback rating was taken on October 4, 2012 (Day 115). Since this was the first time lilies had been planted in this location inoculum levels were very low. To facilitate disease development, inoculum was sprayed onto the foliage using a backpack sprayer on June 22 and July 25, Inoculum was prepared by growing Botrytis elliptica on potato dextrose agar. Once plates were fully colonized it was mixed in a blender with water and then strained through cheese cloth into the backpack sprayer. On the first inoculation, each cell received 100 mls of the inoculum suspension with a spore count of 2500 spores per ml. On the second inoculation, each cell received 120 mls inoculum suspension with a spore count of 182,000 spores per ml solution. Starting on July 18, 2012, the crop was periodically irrigated either by overhead irrigation or via a mist drip-line (starting August 17, 2012) as often as possible to assist with disease development. (See L-112; IR-4 Botrytis Lily file for irrigation intervals).

7 Ornamental Horticulture Program Research Report Form p 6 Researcher: Gary Chastagner and Annie DeBauw Date: 12/5/2012 Project Title: L-112; IR-4 Efficacy of Management Tools for Botrytis on London Lilies Protocol #: PRnumbers: 30556, 30448, 30480, 30554, 31356, 31360, 31357, 31358, 30449, 31359, 31361, Data Collected Please describe data collected and scoring system. Also include the dates data were collected. Disease incidence was rated on a scale of 0 to 10 where 0 = none, 1 = 1-10%, 2 = 11-20%,.., and 10 = % of plants were diseased. Incidence ratings were taken on days 0, 10, 17, and 25. Disease severity was rated on a scale of 0 to 10 where 0 = none, 1 = 1-10%, 2 = 11-20%,.., and 10 = % of the foliage on the plants was killed. Foliage dieback was rated on a scale of 0 to 10 where 0= no green foliage, 1 = 1-10% green foliage, 2 = 11-20% green foliage, 10 = % green foliage remaining on plants. Disease incidence ratings were taken on days 28, 43, 41, 60, 73, 88, and 100. Disease severity and foliage dieback were taken on day 115. Growth data was obtained by measuring the initial height of the plants on June 11, 2012 (Day 0). Height data was collected a second time when crop was in full bloom on July 26, 2012 (Day 45). When taking height data, 3 plants from each cell were randomly selected and the height of the plants was measured from the soil line to the top of the plant. The growth between Day 0 and Day 45 was then calculated. Data analysis: Data were analyzed using ANOVA (GLM SAS). Treatment means were separated using Tukey s Studentized Range (HSD) Test. Application Equipment: During the growing season, weeds were controlled with a combination of Diuron 80 2 lbs./acre as well as broadcast and spot applications of Round-Up ProMax and Ranger Pro using a Solo backpack sprayer. For broadcast applications, sprayer was equipped with a Spray Systems TK 2 nozzle. For spot applications sprayer was equipped with a 8002 Tee-jet nozzle. For both types of weed control applications the sprayer was set at 15 psi in the indicated volumes of water. All trial treatment applications were applied with a CO 2 sprayer equipped with an 8002 Tee Jet nozzle at 15 psi in the indicated volume of water. Raw Data Insert raw data below or send separate file containing raw data. See L-112; IR-4 Botrytis Lily file for raw data Environmental conditions during the experiment: Insert temperature, precipitation and/or irrigation, and relative humidity with a minimum of high, low and average daily temperatures. Or send separate file with this information. Include a statement about any significant weather or environmental events during the course of the experiment. (see L-112; IR-4 Botrytis Lily file for environmental data).
