ntrodution AGRCULTURAL LAND CLASSFCATON REORT BASNGSTOKE AND DEANE BOROUGH LOCAL LAN, STES 1-1, LAND TO THE SOUTH WEST OF BASNGSTOKE. 1. This report presents the findings of a reoimaissane Agriultural Land Classifiation (ALC) survey of 17. hetares of land to the south west of Basingstoke, near Dummer in Hampshire. The survey was arried out during June The survey was ommissioned by the inistry of Agriullure, Fisheries and Food (AFF) from its Land Use lanning Unit in Reading in ormetion wilh the Basingstoke and Deane Borough Loal lan. The results of this survey supersede any previous ALC information for this land.. The work was onduted by members ofthe Resoure lanning Team in the Guildford Statutory Group of ADAS. The land has been graded in aordane wilh the published AFF ALC guidelines and riteria (AFF, 19). A desription oflhe ALC grades and subgrades is given in Appendix At the time of survey, the agriultural land on this site was either in arable rops or grass. The areas of the site shown as Other Land inlude domesti dwellings, various traks and roadways and woodland. art of the site was not surveyed as an established rop of oilseed rape prevented aess. Summary. The findings ofthe survey are shown on the enlosed ALC map. The map has been drawn at a sale of 1:,. t is aurate at this sale, but any enlargement would be misleading. 6. The area and proportions ofthe ALC grades and subgrades on the surveyed land are summarised in Table 1 below. 3 7. The fieldwork was onduted at an average density of slightly less than 1 boring every hetares. A total of 6 borings and 6 soil pils were desribed.. The land at this site has been lassified as Grade (very good quality), Subgrade a (good quality) and Subgrade b (moderate quality) on the basis of soil wetness and soil droughtiness limitations. 9. The areas shown as Grade are prinipally limited by minor soil droughliness and/or workabuity restrifions. Soils ommonly omprise variably stony medium silty topsous and subsoils sometimes passing to alk at depth in the profile. The ombination of soil textures, stones in the profile and restrited rooting into the alk auses profile available water to be slightly restrited in these soils given the prevailing limate, whi is relatively moist in regional terms. Soil droughtiness may affet plant growth and yield in some years. 1. Over the majority ofthe site, Subgrade a has been mapped. The most ommon restrition to land quality in these areas is soil droughtiness, although soil wetness/workability is limiting aross loalised parts ofthe sue. Where sou droughtiness is the prinipal limitation, variably stony, medium silty topsoils and upper subsoils overiie alk at shallow to moderate depths in the profile. The presene of alk in the profile auses plant rooting depth to be restrited to the extent that given the loal limali regime this land is affeted by soil droughtiness to the extent that Subgrade a is appropriate. Soil droughliness may affet plant growth and yield in some years. 11. The remaining areas whi are mapped as Subgrade a and all ofthe land assigned to b are limited by soil wet ness/workabuity where soils have developed from deposits of Claywith-Flints. n these areas the soils ommonly omprise medium, or oasionally heavy, silty, topsoils over similar upper subsoils whi overlie slightly gleyed and slowly permeable lays at shallow to moderate depths in the profile. These slowly permeable horizons ause drainage to be impeded so that land utilisation is restrited. The depth al whi these horizons our determines the severity ofthe soil wetness restritions and therefore the ALC grade. Fators nfluening ALC Grade Climate 1. Climate affets the grading of land through the assessment of an overall limati limitation and also through interations with soil arateristis. 1. The key limati variables used for grading this site are given in Table and were oblained from the published km grid datasets using the standard interpolation proedures (el. Offie, 199). 14. The limati riteria are onsidered first when lassifying land as limate an be overriding in the sense that severe limitations will restrit land to low grades irrespetive of favourable site or soil onditions.. The main parameters used in the assessment of an overall limati limitation are average armual rainfall (AAR), as a measure of overall wetness, and aumulated temperature (ATO, January to June), as a measure ofthe relative warmth ofa loality.

Table : Climali and altitude data Fator Units Values Values Grid referene Altitude Aumulated Temperature Average Annual Rainfall Field Capaity Days oisnire Defiit, Wheat oisture E>efiit, otatoes N/A m, AOD day C (Jan-June) mm days mm mm SU SU The ombination of rainfall and temperature at this site mean that there is no overall limati limitation (Climali Grade 1). However, limati fators an interat with soil properties to influene soil wetness and droughtiness. At this loality the limate is relatively ool and moist, in regional terms, su that the risk of soil droughtiness will be redued, whilst the anes of soil wetness restritions are likely lo be enhaned. 17. Loal limati fators su as frost risk and exposure are not thought likely to adversely affet agriultural land use on this site. Site 1. The land on this site ranges from 1m AOD in the south-west to 16m AOD in the west. The land slopes gently around two dry valley feaiures, one mnning north-west lo southeast through the entre of the site, and the other mnrung north-east lo south-west aross the southem part of the site. Gradient and mirorelief do not affet agriultural land quality aross the site. 19. Flooding does not appear to be limiting on this sue. Geology and soils. The relevant geologial sheet for the site (BGS, 191) shows most ofthe site to be underlain by Upper Chalk, with isolated pates of Clay-with-Flints drift deposits around Bulls Bushes Farm and to the south-east of Dean Heath Copse. 1. The most reently published soils information for this area (SSEW, 19) maps the Carstens soil assoiation aross most of the site with areas of Charity assoiation soils through the valley bottoms on the site. The former are desribed as 'well drained fine silty over layey, layey and fine silty soils, often very flinty' (SSEW, 19). The latter are 'well drained, flinty fine silty soils in valley bottoms. Calareous fine silty soils over alk or alk mbble on valley sides, sometimes shallow.' (SSEW, 19). Agriultural Land Classiflation. The details ofthe lassifiation ofthe site are shown on the attaed ALC map and the area statistis of ea grade are given in Table 1, page 1.

. The loation ofthe auger borings and pils is shown on the attaed sample loation map and the details ofthe soils data are presented in Appendix. Grade 4. Very good quality agriultural land has been mapped where minor soil droughfiness and/or workabiuty limitations restrit the use ofthe land. Soil profiles typially omprise nonalareous (oasionally alareous), medium silty lay loam topsoils whi ontain between and 1% total flints by volume (1-% >m). These overlie similar, or slightly heavier, upper subsoils, passing to heavy silty lay loam lower subsoils whi tend to beome progressively more stony with depth. Within the Grade mapping unu towards the north-west of the site, profiles were ommonly impenetrable to the soil auger at depths greater than m due to the presene of flints in the subsou. However, soil pits and (see Appendix ) proved that the soil resoure extended to at least 9m depth, although lower subsoil horizons ontained between and % flints by volume. There was some evidene of slight seasonal wateriogging in the form of mottling and manganese onretions in a number of the profiles, but these soils are assessed as wetness lass 1. However, given the ombination of medium silly lay loam topsoil textures and the relatively high field apaity day range al this loality, the land aimot be graded higher than Grade on the basis of a minor soil workability restrifion. This will restrit the opportunities for landwork and/or grazing. n addition, the interation of stony soils with the limati onditions whi prevail, results in a minor soil droughtiness restrition. This will affet the level and onsisteny of rop yields.. Towards the south ofthe site soils are similar to those desribed above, the differene being that alk bedrok was enountered at depths between and 7m deplh. Soil pil 6 (Appendix ) is typial of these soils. Due to alk being enountered within rop rooting depth, there is a restrition on the profile available water. oisture balane alulations indiate that there are insuffiient reserves of soil moisture to meet the demands of a growing rop throughout the year, su that Grade is appropriate on the basis of a slight soil droughtiness limitation. Subgrade a 6. Land assigned to this grade is limited in its agriultural use by soil droughtiness and/or soil wetness/workability. Soils fall into one of two types. 7. The majority of the soils wilhin the Subgrade a mapping urut, are araterised by being relatively shallow over alk. Typially alareous or non-alareous medium, or oasionally heavy, silty lay loam topsoils, onlaining -1% total flints by volume (1-% >m), overlie similar upper subsoils and pass to alk bedrok between and m depth. A number of profiles, partiularly towards the south ofthe site, were found to be impenetrable to the soil auger due to the presene of flints in the subsou horizons. Soil inspetion pils and 4 (see Appendix ), are representative of these soils. Rooting into the alk bedrok was found lo be restrited, su that profile available water is unlikely to be suffiient to meet the demands of a growing rop throughout the year. oisiure balane alulations suggest that the degree of soil moisture defiit is onsistent with a land lassifiation of Subgrade a.. solated soils within the Subgrade a mapping unit, most notably on the higher land, are derived from deposits of Clay-with-Flints, and as su are more layey throughout and are

restrited by soil wetness/workability. Soil pit 1 is typial of these soils. edium or heavy lay loam topsoils, overiie similar upper subsoils, and pass to lay lower subsoils whi were found to be slowly permeable, from shallow depth. Su soils will be imperfetly drained to the extent that wetness lass and Subgrade a is appropriate, given the prevailing limali regime. This land is affeted by a ombination of soil wetness and/or workabilily whi will resuu in restrifions on the versatility of the land and the opportunities for ultivations, traffiking and grazing by livestok. Subgrade Sb 9. oderate quality land is mapped as three small mapping units aross the site. Soils have developed from deposits of Clay-with-FHnls and omprise non-alareous heavy silty lay loam topsoils whi diretly overlie slowly permeable lay subsoils. Soils with su drainage arateristis are assessed as wetness lass, whi when ombined with the heavy topsoil textures, and the relatively moist limati regime at this loality, results in a land lassifiation of Subgrade b. This land will be severely limiied by soil wetness/workability, and the utilisation ofthe land will thereby be restrited. ielle Leek Resoure lanning Team ADAS Reading

The level of yield is generally high but may be lower or more variable than Grade 1 land. Grade : Good to oderate Quality Land Land with moderaie limitations whi affet the oie of rops, the timing and type of ultivation, harvesting or the level of yield. When more demanding rops are grown, yields are generally lower or more variable than on land in Grades 1 and. Subgrade a: Good Quality Agriultural Land Land apable of onsistently produing moderate to high yields of a nartow range of arable rops, espeially ereals, or moderate yields ofa wide range of rops inluding ereals, grass, oilseed rape, potatoes, sugar beet and the less demanding hortiultural rops. Subgrade b: oderate Quality Agriultural Land Land apable of produing moderate yields ofa narrow range of rops, prinipally ereals and grass, or lower yields of a wider range of rops or high yields of grass that an be grazed or harvested over most ofthe year.
