2 AGRICULTURAL LAND CLASSIFICATION REPORT HAMPSHIRE MINERALS PLAN OMISSION SITE EATTON FARM, HORDLE Summary ADAS was ommissioned by MAFF s Land Use Planning Unit to provide information on land quality for a number of sites in Hampshire The work forms part of MAFF s statutory input to the Hampshire Minerals Plan Site ompnses approximately 9 hetares of land to the east of Hordle in Hampshire An Agriultural Land Classifiation (ALC) survey was arried out in November 99 The survey was undertaken al a detailed level of approximately one boring per hetare A total of borings and two soil inspetion pits were assessed in aordane with MAFF s revised guidelines and nteria for grading the quality of agriultural land (MAFF 988) These guidelines provide a framework for lassifying land aording lo the extent to whih its physial or hemial haralenstis impose long term limitations on its use for agnullure The work was arried out by members of the Resoure Planning Team in the Guildford Statutory Group of ADAS Al the lime of the survey the majonty of the land was in permanent grass The remainder of the site towards the west was in set aside and was overed with volunteer linseed The distribution of grades and subgrades is shown on the attahed ALC map and the areas are given in the table below The map has been drawn at a sale of It IS aurate at this sale but any enlargement would be misleading This map supersedes any previous ALC survey information for this site Tible Distribution of Gndes and Subgrides Gride Arei (hi) 8 a 9 b 9 Non-Agriultural 7 Woodland 8 Total area of Site 9 ha % of Site % %of Agriultural Land %C7 7ha)

3 I 6 Appendix I gives a general desnption of the grades subgrades and land use ategories identified in the survey The mam lasses are desnbed in terms of the type of limitation that an our the typial ropping range and the expeted level and onsisteny of yield 7 The agnultural land at this site has been lassified Grade very good quality to Subgrade b moderate quahty inluding a substantial proportion of Subgrade a good quahty The pnnipal limitations inlude soil wetness and to a lesser extent soil droughttness Soil weiness affets the majonty of the land surveyed where slowly permeable lay horizons our between and 8m in the sod profile These ause drainage lo be slightly to severely impeded dependant on deplh to the slowly permeable honzon Poorly drained soils an inhibit plant and root development and may be more suseptible to stmtural damage through traffiking by mahinery or poahing by grazing livestok In some observations soil droughtiness was more (or equally) limiting than (to) soil wetness At these points the soil profile was found to ontain varying proportions of flints These serve to slightly and moderately restni profile available water suh that within the loal limati parameters there is a nsk of soil droughiiness Climate I The limati ntena are onsidered first when lassifying land as limate an be overriding in the sense that severe limitations will restrit land to low grades irrespetive of favourable site or soil onditions The main parameters used in the assessment of an overall limati hmitalion are average annual rainfall as a measure of overall wetness and aumulated temperature as a measure ofthe relative warmth ofa loality A detailed assessment ofthe prevailing limate was made by interpolation from a km gndpoint dataset (Met Offie 989) The details are given in the table below and these show that there is no overall limati limitation affeting the site No loal limati falors suh as exposure or frost nsk are believed to affet the site However limati and soil fators interat to influene soil wetness and droughtiness limitations

5 passes to a slightly stony (up lo % lolal flints) gleyed medium or heavy lay loam or medium silly lay loam upper subsoil horizon This ommonly overlies a slightly stony (up to % total flints) gleyed and slowly permeable lay lower subsoil horizon from between 7 and 8m In some instanes the lay was not enountered Soils of this nature given the loal limati regime are plaed in Weiness Class II (see Appendix II) leading to a Grade lassifiatton when the workability status of the topsoii is taken into aount These wetness and workability fators lead to slight restritions on the versatility of the land prinipally in terms of the timing of ultivations and stoking if stmtural damage to the soil IS to be avoided Pit (see Appendix III) is typial of this mapping unit Oasional observations in this grade were prinipally limited by soil droughtiness Profiles are essentially similar lo those desnbed above i e medium lay loam topsotl and upper subsoil beoming heavy lay loam in the lower subsoil exept that the stone ontent of the lower subsoil inreased from about 9m suh that bonngs beame impenetrable to the soil auger Suh stone ontents ause slight soil droughtiness due to minor reslnlions on profile available water whih is likely to slightly affet plant growth and yield Subgride a Land of good qualtty is mapped aross the majority of the site The prinipal hmiiation for the majonty of observations ts soil wetness auhough soil droughtiness is signifiant in some ases Profiles limited by soil wetness typially ompnse a very slightly stony (up to % tolal flints) oasionally gleyed or shghtly gleyed medium lay loam or medium silty lay loam topsoii This passes to a similarly stony ommonly gleyed medium silly lay loam medium or heavy lay loam upper subsoil horizon Underlying this is a gleyed and slowly permeable slightly stony (% total flints) lay whih either passes lo a slowly permeable moderately stony (% lotal flints) heavy lay loam lower subsoil and beomes impenetrable to the soil auger between 7 and m depth or remains as lay to deplh (m) The effet ofthe slowly permeable horizon ts to impede drainage to the extent that Wetness Class III (see Appendix II) is appropnate and subsequently Subgrade a when the workabihly status of the topsods are taken into aount These wetness and workability fators lead to moderate restritions on the versatility ofthe land pnnipally in terms ofthe timing of ultivations and stoking Pit (see Appendix III) is typial of this soil type The oasional observations limited by soil droughtiness have profiles that omprise a shghtly stony (up to % total flints) medium lay loam topsoii over a slightly or moderately stony (up to % total flints) ommonly gleyed medium lay loam or heavy lay loam upper subsoil Oasionally this horizon beomes impenetrable to the soil auger around 6m but more ommonly the upper subsoil overlies a moderately stony (up to % total flints) gleyed sandy lay loam heavy lay loam or lay whih beomes impenetrable to the soil auger around 7m

6 From the pit observation p on a previous adjaent survey (ADAS Ref 8/9/9 Appendix III) profiles of this nature are plaed in Subgrade a on the basis of soil droughtiness when loal limati falors are onsidered These profiles have a moderate droughliness limitation pnmanly beause the stones in the profile redue soil available water to the extent that there is a moderate nsk of drought stress affeting plant growth and yield potential Subgrade b Land of moderate quality is shown in two units towards the north and entre ofthe site Pnnipal limitations inlude soil wetness and soil droughttness Profiles affeted by soil wetness are in two groups The most ommon our towards the entre ofthe stle and typially omprise a very slightly stony (% total flints) lay loam oasionally medium silty lay loam topsoii This passes to a ommonly gleyed very slightly stony (up to % total flints) shallow lay loam upper subsod This overlies a slightly stony (up to % total flints) slowly permeable lay honzon Oasionally the lay loam upper subsoil horizon was absent from the profile Where this ours the topsoil passes to slowly permeable lay In the majonly of observations the lay overlies a lay loam lower subsod remaining slowly permeable if heavy (see p Appendix III) Commonly the lower subsoil beomes inreasingly slony (up to % total flints) until impenetrable to the sod auger between 7 and m The severe drainage impedane that the slowly permeable horizon(s) ause plaes these soils in Weiness Class IV (see Appendix II) and subsequently Subgrade b when the workability status of the topsoii ts taken into aount This degree of soil wetness plaes severe restritions on the versatility of the land in terms of the timing of uhivations and stoking Sod wetness may also adversely affet rop growth and development The seond group of soils affeted by soil wetness our towards the north ofthe site These were saturated at the time of survey (November) and Wetness Class IV (see Appendix II) was onsidered appropriate Profiles were typially found to ompnse a slightly stony (up to % total flints) oasionally gleyed medium lay loam or medium silty lay loam lopsoil This passes lo a stoneless to moderately stony (up to % total flints) gleyed heavy lay loam overlying a similarly stony gleyed and slowly permeable lay lower subsoil honzon When the assigned wetness lass is onsidered alongside the workability status of the topsoii Subgrade b is appropriate Soil wetness of this nature plaes severe restritions ultivations and/or grazing by hvestok Towards the entre oflhe site oasional observations were hmited to Subgrade b on the basis of soil droughiiness Proflles in this area typially ompnse a very slightly stony (% total flints) medium lay loam topsoii passing to a moderately or very stony (% % total flints) medium or heavy lay loam upper subsoil whih beame impenetrable to the soil auger between and m From the adjaent survey (/\I)AS Ref 8/9/9 Ip) impenetrable profiles of this
