2 January 2005 Greetings! Here we are back for another exciting year, growing and selling Canada s Best Daylilies! 2005 marks our 10 th anniversary and is our 11 th year in business. Arcadian Daylilies has a proven track record of providing Quality, Value & Selection that is unrivaled in the business. Nobody, does a better job of researching, sourcing and trialing daylilies to find the cultivars best suited to provide exceptional performance in Canadian gardens. You get, a comprehensive selection of leading edge daylilies, with proven track records in Canadian gardens, and heritage favorites that have stood the test of time, and still provide a formidable garden presence. We will be kicking this year off at Canada Blooms, March 9-13, with a selection of reblooming daylilies that is unsurpassed in extending the bloom season for northern gardens. Visit us in the Plant Market at Canada Blooms. We ll be in booth 1307, the same as last year. Watch our web site for exciting offers and promotions. We are finding that every year a larger portion of our business comes from the internet, and we will be putting more content on our website. Check out the archived newsletters and if you like them tell us you want to subscribe for free. For 2005 our focus will be on the mail-order part of our business. We feel so lucky to have so many loyal customers that keep sending us orders year after year. We know your daylilies are spectacular and hope they bring you as much pleasure as they bring us. Garden visitors will see the Hendrick Avenue garden undergo a major rebuild this year. We will see if our energy can match pace with our imagination, but the plans are grand at this point. We hope you enjoy your winters browsing through this catalogue, and we wish your gardens be magnificent throughout the year. Sandy Carlton & Family Cover Photo Word of Honor We have long known that many of the best daylilies we have encountered have come from Joiner Gardens in Savannah Georgia. Enman Joiner, one of the Grand Masters of daylily hybridizing has been working his magic for over 40 years, and has given us yet another incredible cultivar in Word of Honor. A mid late season bloomer that started the end of July and bloomed until mid September for us, one of the most beautiful aspects of Word of Honor was the lush, sturdy, emerald green and blemish free foliage. Like most Joiner daylilies totally winter hardy in our gardens.

12 Word of Honor (Joiner 2003) $ Evergreen ML Reblooms Tetraploid Our cover Photo for 2005, Word of Honor is one spectacular daylily that will always have a special place in our gardens. From Enman Joiner s line of Tulip Shaped doubles, WOH usually holds the cup shape of the outer petals and sepals until late in the day. Occasionally the sepals will fold down while the petals remain upright enclosing the intensely ruffled center petloids. A dusky wild rose, the colour will become a little more dusky as the day progresses. Registered as a 5.5 bloom WOH has a far larger garden presence, consistently stopping garden visitors for admiring looks. Foliage is big and blemish free we actually consider it to be some of the best looking early spring and late season foliage in the garden. Bloom starts in our gardens the last week of July and continues until mid September. WOH does rebloom, although we are unsure whether it will in Canada. We have long been impressed with cultivars coming out of Joiner Gardens and Word of Honor is no exception. Minimum Order 10 - no maximum $3.00 ea Public Daylily Gardens at Humber Arboretum Arcadian Daylilies partnership with the Arboretum continues to build a truly world class daylily collection, illustrating the many styles, sizes, heights and colours of the modern Daylily as well as many historical daylilies from Apricot introduced by George Yeld in 1893, onwards. The Humber Arboretum is a not for profit center for urban ecology on the West Humber River in northwest Toronto. Enter a world of beauty as you wander along trails and boardwalks through gardens, forests, meadows and wetlands. The Arboretum Daylily collection includes the Stout Silver Medal bed, which winds for 200 feet through an incredible park-like setting featuring mature trees, ponds, immaculate flowerbeds, & open lawns. The Stout bed was specially prepared to illustrate the evolution of the daylily since Hesperus received the first Stout Medal in This is the only complete SSM collection in Canada. A handful of the cultivars in this collection are such tender evergreens that they will not survive our Canadian winters. The staff at the arboretum have put the extra effort into moving the most tender of the plants into the greenhouse for the winter and they will be reinstalled in the Stout Medal Bed every spring. This is not the way daylilies are intended to be grown, however for the purposes of maintaining this historically significant collection for Canadian Daylily enthusiasts to enjoy the extra effort is being applied. During 2003, work began on a Collection of Species Daylilies at the Arboretum. These daylilies for the most part have more historical significance than commercial value, and the Humber Arboretum is the perfect place to preserve and display this important plant material. The Arboretums Daylily Species Collection currently contains over 20 species and sub-species, that bloom at different times by species from May until September. Did you know some of the species rebloom. The Humber Arboretum is itself a Joint Project between the City of Toronto Parks, the Toronto Region Conservation Authority and Humber College. Located at the back of Humber College north campus the arboretum is open daylight hours, 365 days a year. Parking for arboretum visitors is free in Lot #1 behind Humber College. Use Entrance A to the college. Access is off of Humber College Blvd west of Hwy 27 and south of Finch Ave. Washroom facilities are available in the residence building adjacent the arboretum.

13 Cultural Advice Daylilies are one of the easiest and most forgiving perennials to grow. Here are a few tips to help you get the most out of your plants. The crown, where leaves meet roots should be about an inch below the soil surface. Planting too deep will result in diminished bloom and weakened plant while it grows an elongated crown to come closer to the surface. Planting too shallow can result in exposed roots that are prone to damage. Daylilies can be planted anytime the ground can be broken and that is only because your shovel won t work too well in frozen ground. There is some evidence that plants divided late in the autumn are more prone to infection and rot, however our experience with planting container grown plants even into December has proven favorable. Extra care with fall plantings, tamping the ground down around the plant, watering well to settle and mulching after the ground has frozen will prevent frost heaving and exposed roots, which can weaken or kill your daylily. Daylilies are tolerant of any soil from clay to sand but incorporating lots of organic matter into the soil before you plant, is probably the single best thing you can offer your cherished daylilies. Compost, well rotted manure, peat and soiless potting mixes will all contribute to good tilth, air and water penetration to the roots, and the ability of the soil to provide a slow release of nutrients to your plants. Dig a hole much larger than the plant will require, removing the soil and mixing with equal volumes of compost or other organic matter. Of course this will mean the level of your bed will be higher than you started with but it will settle over the months following. When planting, tamp the soil down and water well to help eliminate larger air pockets. Watch in the weeks following and be prepared to add another inch or 2 on top if you do notice that excessive settling is occurring or that roots are becoming exposed. Daylilies are shade tolerant but if they don t get 5 hours of direct sun per day you won t get maximum bloom. Adequate water leading up to bloom season is essential for good bud development (rule of thumb 1.5 weekly) Fertilizer Everyone has their own opinion on fertilizing. Generally the more sun and water your plants receive the more fertilizer they will utilize. Gardeners that incorporate lots of rich organic matter into their soil can get spectacular bloom with no chemical fertilizers. If you feel you need to give your plants a boost, here are some suggestions. Water soluble fertilizers provide a cheap, easy and flexible method of delivering nutrients to your plants, including micronurients, that are included in many standard formulations. Water soluble fertilizers may be used as a foliar feed if diluted to ½ strength. Soaking roots in a dilute solution (¼ strength) of before planting, and/or watering with this formulation after planting can help the roots get started. A balanced during vegetative growth will help the plant develop size and strength. A high Potassium formulation fed weekly for a month before bloom will help the scapes and buds develop well. ie: or When using these fertilizers it is always better to err on the cautious side it is just not good plant management to do damage with too much. Because of our very intensive cultural practices we use a premium grade, coated time-release (6 month) fertilizer incorporated into the soil around the roots when planting. We also have found excellent results using a handful of pure alfalfa pellets incorporated into the soil. As the alfalfa breaks down it releases a natural plant growth hormone (Triacontanol) that positively influences the daylily growth. Daylilies emerge in spring with a vigorous vegetative growth cycle, followed by a reproductive cycle during which bloom scapes, flowers and seeds are produced. The reproductive cycle is followed by a second vegetative growth cycle in the late summer and autumn. Strength is built and energy stored during the vegetative cycles and drawn on during the reproductive cycle. A weak plant in a reproductive cycle can be encouraged to start strengthening itself by simply removing the bloom scape. (if you can bear to do that) Daylily Rust Our Gardens remain rust free. Evidence seems to indicate that Puccinia hemerocallidis (Daylily Rust) will not survive Canadian winters. Rust has become largely a non issue for the average Canadian collector. Canada Blooms We are again looking forward to participating in Canada Blooms, one of the best Flower and Garden Shows in the world, March 9-13, We will be in the same booth as last year in the Plant Market booth #1307. You can find us right under the big banner that reads Plant Market. For 2005 we will be bringing an impressive collection of bare root reblooming daylilies. You have asked for them and we feel proud to have found the best reblooming daylilies there are. As well we will have a few of the more expensive plants, multifans grown in containers.

14 Mail Ordering Shipping Policy for 2005 Shipping will start the beginning of May and continue until all orders have gone out (middle or end of June). Plants are shipped by Canada Post Expedited Parcel on Mondays and Tuesdays so that they will not spend the weekend in the post office. New for 2005 for reasons of our health and well being and to ensure the highest possible quality is provided for you, we will not be digging, washing and drying plants in inclement weather (rain, or when temperatures are below 10ºC). This may cause some delay in getting orders out, and we ask for your patience in waiting for your order. If you provide an address with your order we will confirm shipping date, and notify you if delays occur. We try extremely hard to meet your delivery requests. Shipping priority is given on a First-Paid-For-Basis. Orders received in January are assigned their preferred shipping date before orders received in April & May. It is never too late to order and you are welcome to phone or to enquire about availability and shipping dates. How they are shipped Daylilies ship very easily through the mail. Fresh dug plants have the soil washed from the roots. Leaves and roots are trimmed to prevent breakage and excess water loss. When dry, plants are packed in a ventilated cardboard box and shipped to you by Expedited Parcel. Delivery by Expedited Parcel to most major centers in Ontario and Quebec takes 1 or 2 days. To a smaller town or Rural Route will take a day longer. Delivery to Western and Atlantic Canada will take 3 or 4 days in most cases, although it can take as long as 4 or 5 business days to more remote areas. Xpresspost delivery is available at extra cost please enquire for rates and times. All plants we ship are minimum double fans. Cultivars that grow well for us are often shipped out as triples, quads or better. As a general rule of thumb the less expensive daylilies, are less expensive because they multiply faster and we have larger inventory of them. When we have large inventory we try to share that with our customers through larger divisions. More expensive cultivars are such because our supply is smaller and these plants are usually shipped as double fan divisions. We find that up to 75% of our bare root mail order plants bloom the first year. Order Pickup Customers are always welcome to pick up their orders and save the shipping charge. We grow many cultivars not listed in this catalogue. If you saw it in a previous catalogue we may still have a few to sell but not enough to list in the catalogue feel free to ask. It happens Thankfully not often - we sell out of something and have to turn away orders for that cultivar. Every effort is made to only include cultivars in our catalogue that there are adequate supplies of. We have learned to expect to be surprised by which cultivars are popular and sometimes sell out - if there is something special you want, you are best advised to place your order early. Again, plants are committed on a First-Paid-For-Basis. Substitution Policy our track record is excellent, but it can and does occasionally happen that when we go to dig the plants you have requested we may not be able to provide a plant of quality that meets our standards. Aside from sold out situations, plants can be damaged by wildlife or human carelessness, spring sickness can make a plant temporarily unsaleable, and tags have been known to mysteriously move or disappear. When placing orders please let us know what your preferences are regarding substitution or refund. If you provide an address, and we know in advance that we cannot meet one of your requests, we will for instructions. Otherwise, unless you have indicated on your order that we may substitute, we will provide a refund cheque for any portion of your order that cannot be filled. When necessary substitutions are made with plants of equal or greater value, similar to what you wanted if possible, and we try to send oversized divisions to make up for any disappointment. You are welcome to include a list of substitutions for us to choose from. Offer to Garden Clubs and other nonprofit organizations We are tremendously overstocked on some of the most vigorous daylily cultivars, and are looking to clear these out. These are cultivars that we can provide excellent colour images of but do not have colour pot tags. It is virtually impossible for garden centers to sell plants without colour tags. Rather than destroy these plants we will be offering them at very attractive prices, through May and June to nonprofit organizations for their plant sales and fundraising efforts. Regular wholesale plants with colour pot tags are also available at regular wholesale prices. Please enquire if you think your organization might be interested. We will be supporting several fundraising Plant Sales this spring. Watch our web site for details, dates, times and places.

Garden Visitors We are one of Canada s largest daylily growers and mail-order sources but do not operate a retail outlet. Garden visitors are welcome by appointment at our Hendrick Avenue garden - often possible on short notice. We operate from home. Please have the courtesy to call ahead. Drop in visitors cannot be accommodated. Public Daylily Gardens are open year round at the Humber Arboretum behind Humber College Main campus and we can recommend a number of excellent Garden Centers and Nurseries that carry our daylilies if you just want to drop in. Dutch Source Wholesale Plants Arcadian Daylilies is a supplier of container grown Daylilies to Garden Centers and Nurseries. While many of our wholesale plants are field grown, some are imported from the Netherlands specifically for this market. The logistics involved in supplying an international market with hundreds of thousands or millions of plants, sometimes results in plants going to market that are not true to name, due to tissue culture error or substitution. 3 cultivars have so impressed us that for 2005 we are offering in this catalogue, from Dutch source (multi fan, 2 year old plants) that have proven to be indistinguishable from their field grown counterparts. We offer these plants at considerable cost savings over field grown divisions. These are Must Have Daylilies for every garden, all are rebloomers, all have exceptional foliage and if you don t mind their origin you will not find them cheaper anywhere else. Daring Deception fabulous foliage, crisp bright blooms with Bold eye and edge Strawberry Candy a Stout Silver Medalist and always a leader in popularity polls Strawberry Candy is one of the most recognized daylilies of all time. Moonlit Masquerade recipient of the 2004 Stout Silver Medal, MM exemplifies the State of the Art of daylilies today. Excellent foliage lasting late in the autumn, vigorous multiplier, prolific bloom with rebloom before initial bloom is finished. For 2005 we offer both field grown and Dutch source. Our guarantee to you, is that all of our plants are true to name, and that where we offer Dutch Source or Tissue Culture it is clearly indicated. 16 Fragrant Daylilies Every year we find more and more daylilies that appear to be more and more fragrant. We know from your comments that this quality is important, and we are working to bring you a selection of the best fragrant daylilies there are. The best rebloom will occur during long hot summers where plants get adequate sun, moisture & fertility. While there are many non-reblooming daylilies that will always have a place in our gardens we have noticed that it is the rebloomers that provide the greatest early and late season bloom.
