2 News Solace After the Storm Kilgore Employees Aid Retailer During Holiday Disaster Memorial Day weekend has a special place in American hearts. The annual summer holiday is the picture-perfect example of the summer getaway, an extended break that offers many the chance to enjoy the weather and company of friends and family. That idyllic image is certainly what Ken and Suzy Turner had in mind. While Hometown Hardware, their store in Longview, Texas, would be open Memorial Day in the morning and early afternoon, they planned to close up shop early to allow themselves and their employees time to enjoy as much of the holiday as they could. That was the plan, until, the Sunday before the holiday, the weather turned dark for the east Texas community. On May 28, a violent storm swept through Longview with top sustained wind speeds reaching 55 mph according to the Longview News-Journal. While no one was killed, the town endured power outages with trees and limbs littering homes, yards and roadways. Many residents of Houston are still cleaning up after the storm that turned into Hurricane Harvey, but the reaction to the Memorial Day storm in Longview shows how retailers can help their communities in times of need. Around 10 in the morning, I got a panicked phone call from the store, Ken says. One of my employees calls saying, Ken, we re out of generators, D batteries, everything, just everything. Is there any way we can get more? Ken and Suzy s first thought was to bring in supplies from their sister store in Diana, Texas. Those supplies were quickly snapped up by consumers looking to keep their homes and businesses powered. The next call went to fellow retailers, who could share the emergency supplies Hometown Hardware was selling out of. Each of these ideas helped, bringing in supplies, but by 1 p.m. the store was again bereft of the essential supplies the townspeople needed. Big-box retailers were reporting they were out of the same supplies and there would be no resupplying during the holiday. So, Ken turned to an option he didn t know for sure would work. But it was worth a try. Ron Kennedy, right, Orgill s district sales manager for Texas, worked with other Orgill employees to help supply Ken and Suzy Turner. I had really run out of options, and I still had customers in the store desperate for generators, extension cords and other supplies you need after a storm. They ve got food spoiling. So I said, Well I can call my Orgill sales representative. It was a big ask, but we were out of other options, Ken says. While the Kilgore DC is just a short drive from the Longview store, opening up the warehouse for a single store was a long shot, Ken says. To his surprise, after calls to some of his fellow Orgill employees, sales representative C.J. Warner came back to Ken and Suzy with a yes, asking for the store owners to compile a list of needed products. The Kilgore DC was about to be open for business on Memorial Day. 4 Newsworthy Fall 2017

It s phenomenal, in today s world, with everyone taking care of themselves that these guys said, We need to help this customer. Ken Turner, owner, Hometown Hardware The ensuing effort brought in a number of Kilgore employees, including Vic Price, Kilgore vice president; Ron Kennedy, district sales manager; Jesse Gallegos, outbound manager; Derek Stuller, transportation manager; and Warner. Price, enjoying the holiday with his family on a nearby lake, began heading back to the DC while in-town employees converged on the warehouse. Kennedy and Warner were able to relay the needed products to Stuller and Gallegos, who opened the warehouse and began rolling out products. The group was able to properly catalog the orders and together load the emergency supplies into the personal vehicles of Warner and Kennedy for the trip to Hometown Hardware. I have to think, this stuff all happened against normal procedures. That s not the way you order from Orgill, by text message, Ken says. The only policy that these guys followed was Orgill s motto, which is Help our customers be successful. It s phenomenal, in today s world, with everyone taking care of themselves that these guys said, We need to help this customer. Kennedy and Warner were able to get products to Hometown Hardware in short order, then stayed to help Ken, Suzy and their employees run the store and get townspeople supplied in good order. What had begun as a day of relaxation and fun ended with the store staying open until the final customer was served. 6 Newsworthy Fall 2017

They really came through when no one would have criticized them for not doing so. I looked at Suzy and said, There s not another supplier on Earth that would have done what they did. Everybody is so quick to complain about things these days, and these guys went way above and beyond, Ken says. Both Orgill s employees and ours made a big difference that day. Joe Orgill responded with thanks for highlighting the Kilgore crew s work, as well as a note saying he looked forward to seeing Ken and Suzy at the upcoming market.
