BLAIR Statesman Journal file Home show offers chance to ask questions, perhaps take home a new pet By Michelle Te Special to the Statesman Journal For 22 years, Salem-area home contractors and remodelers have been showcasing their business and talents in one location. If your tree falls down, R&R Tree Service is there to show you what to do. If you want to revamp your home s flooring, businesses such as Color Tile can show you the most effective products. Alternately, maybe you want to know the most efficient way to heat your home this winter from ABB Stoves, which offers products from a wood-burning stove to ductless cooling units. This year s Salem Home and Remodel Show is the one place to get all your questions answered; view and participate in demonstrations; and learn more about local, innovative products to make your living space more comfortable. We have probably about 200 companies at the event, so it s a pretty large event, said Kaleb Ramsey, director of event organizer Willamette Valley Productions. Every square inch in the Americraft Center will be filled with local products and companies. The vendors are Salem-area companies, usually locally owned who love to answer questions, promote their business, offer things and sell their business, Ramsey said. You certainly can t beat it for bringing in your questions and finding some answers. It s kind of like going to buy a car. You get to kick the tires and try things out. New this year is the Pet Pavilion and Supply Store, sponsored by Marion County Dog Control and Salem Friends of Felines. Expect to see dogs and cats ready to be adopted, purchase pet supplies and learn about some new options for caring for your furry friends. These are nonprofit groups who also are looking for more volunteers, said Ramsey, and to educate people on things they may not know. Marion County Dog Control s shelter has been taking in lost dogs for the past five years, hoping to reunite dogs with their owners or to find them new families. They will set up a table at the show to promote their shelter in the community, according Sonya Pulvers, office manager for the county Dog Control. They re hoping to partner with Salem Friends of Felines, Hopes Haven Rescue, and other organizations that sell or promote pet-related products and concepts. CONTINUED ON PAGE 5 Statesman Journal 3

5 CONTINUED FROM PAGE 3 The more opportunities we have to meet with the citizens in our community, the more opportunities our dogs have to be reunited with their owners or find that new forever family, Pulvers said. Our goal is to educate the community on responsible dog ownership, on where to go to find that lost dog, where to bring a lost dog wandering in the area, who to call if there is a problem with a dog in your neighborhood and the importance of licensing dogs so that we can get a lost dog returned home much sooner. This is the first time the dog shelter has participated in the Home and Remodel Show, and Pulvers encourages anyone with a lost dog to give her office a call. We receive approximately 2,100 lost dogs a year, she said. One of these dogs could be yours. The shelter has adoptable dogs, and there are numerous volunteer opportunities. The Marion County Dog Shelter needs the community s support in various ways, Pulvers said. We accept donations toward the care and upkeep of our program through monetary donations, as well as much needed items, such as canned dog food, blankets, towels, leashes, collars, pet carriers and dog toys. The Home and Remodel Show also will have live-cooking shows, a silent auction, demonstrations for the home and yard, and dozens of displays. Last year, R&R Tree Service brought in an actual cut-down tree, suspended it from the ceiling, and they climbed it, said Ramsey. They put on the rigging and demonstrated how to safely cut trees. They re a favorite at the show and quite good at what they do. Because of the fall season, there will be some fall and winter landscaping options, from planting trees and shrubs to practical yard maintenance. Ramsey said there s also a home comfort umbrella of options, from woodstoves and gas inserts, to ductless cooling units and tankless water heaters. The tankless water heaters have been pretty popular for the past couple of years, he said. You don t have to have gallons of water sitting there waiting to be used, and there are some good local companies offering that product. Another popular booth is Color Tile, which brings a display of dozens of flooring options, including carpet, hardwood and tile. With the holidays coming, homeowners often think about family returning home, updating their homes and investing in ways to help their family be the most comfortable, said Ramsey. They want to enhance what they have in rooms like the dining room and living spaces. Show highlights Looking for a new friend? The Pet Pavilion and Supply Store will feature information about lost and adoptable dogs and how to volunteer with Marion County Dog Control s shelter, Salem Friends of Felines and Hopes Haven Rescue. Home Depot will host the Kids Workshop and Project Area, where children can don complementary work aprons and decorate a tile they can take home. Got a small space and budget? 8 Efficiency, entertaining key to home remodeling trends When it comes to home remodeling projects, Salemarea residents are opting to open walls and close wallets. Instead of buying new homes, many people are choosing to stay in the ones they already own, but that, doesn t mean they are sacrificing energy efficiency or usability. At the Salem Home and Remodel Show, people can see the latest advancements in solar technology and how to make a small room big among the many options available. Solar electricity is extremely popular, said Matthew Henderson, a field sales consultant for SunWize Solar. Many people still believe it is prohibitively expensive to install solar panels on an existing home, but that just isn t the case. This year, Henderson said the solar trend was moving toward rented equipment. Instead of buying everything outright for $20,000 or more, he said a 3,000-kilowatt system could be leased for an initial payment of $6,000 with lifetime maintenance provided. He said Oregon has a $6,000 tax credit to offset the initial payment. However, solar also can be used to power water heaters, to keep pools warm or for other small-scale uses. During the 1970s and 1980s, homes tended to be more compartmentalized with individual spaces. Kent By Sheldon Traver Special to the Statesman Journal Kaufman, an estimator at Kaufman Homes in Salem, said these homes are being re-imagined and opened. People are socializing more now and want large, open spaces, he said. If they are in the kitchen, they don t want to be alone. This year, he said he s seen more walls being knocked out and spaces opened up to build entertaining spaces. Hard surfaces, including marble, granite and tile, are popular right now, he said. The use of natural wood on floors and cabinetry add contrast to darker surfaces. Taking the indoors outside has continued to be a popular Pacific Northwest remodeling trend. Kaufman said porches are being added with skylights, glass blocks to block wind and reflect sunlight. It seems like any home built today has to have a covered back patio, he said. People are adding outdoor kitchens with grills, ovens, rotisseries, woks and refrigerators. As winter approaches, Kaufman said home weatherization also tops his list of popular remodels. Salem-area residents are changing the look of their homes with new windows, some with triple-pane glass. Additionally, they are upgrading old appliances and furnaces to achieve a new look and save money over the long term. During the Home and Remodel Show, Henderson said visitors can see and touch the latest additions in solar technology, ask questions or schedule a home visit. Kaufman said you don t need to come to the show with a plan to immediately remodel. Sometimes you just need ideas and to see what the possibilities are, he said. 8 Home & Remodel Show

10 Bathrooms receive luxurious treatments Bathrooms have come a long way since being wood-covered holes in the ground. Today, modern bathrooms are being transformed into miniature retreats, often with luxuries once dedicated to living rooms and bedrooms. While opulence is in, people also are looking for practicality and convenience that will last well into their retirement years. Walk-in tubs are the big in thing, said Ray Sambuceto, a regional manager for George Morlan Plumbing. It s been growing the last year or year and a half. Walk-in tubs are designed with a door for easy entry. The tub fills with water around the homeowner. However, they aren t the square, fiberglass tubs often seen in nursing homes, he said. Instead, they are built to blend easily into any remodeling project. You can get these as soakers, jetted or with air, Sambuceto said. These are really classy tubs that will fit into any decor. Additionally, he said easy-access showers with seats and comfort-height toilets are popular. Accessibility isn t just for older homeowners. Because of their relatively low cost compared to other projects, bathroom makeovers are a large part of Ron Thompson s business. He owns Thompson Design and Interiors. Everyone wants bathrooms that are as nice as the rest of their home, he said. Sunken tubs, rain-head showers, heated toilet seats and heated towel bars are all very popular right now. His and hers bathroom treatments aren t limited to sinks, Thompson said. Showers with separate showerheads and electronically controlled thermostats that adjust water temperature are popular. By Sheldon Traver Special to the Statesman Journal While still considered a higher end luxury, Sambuceto said steam showers and saunas are increasing in popularity. Used widely in Europe, these showers use less water than traditional ones. Some homeowners are opting for models that have built in music and DVD players. At Color Tile, owner Dave Lee said accents are in and that this includes extensive use of hard materials such as marble, granite, tile and glass. Glass is coming through the roof, he said. People are taking natural stone and accenting it with glass trim and using it throughout their bathrooms and homes. Although the technology for heated floors was developed many years ago, it became more popular this year. Vinyl flooring also has come far in its history and usage. This isn t your grandma s linoleum, Lee said. A few years ago, developers came up with a tile that can be formed to look like natural stone and is far more durable. These glass-backed tiles can be installed without adhesives and are designed to last many years. Stone in various sizes is being incorporated throughout entire bathrooms from shower stalls and floors to walls and countertops, and homeowners often will use tile or stone in a specific color as a theme throughout a home. A new trend Lee said he has also seen is shower nooks, which are recessed from shower walls and designed to hold personal hygiene items. They come preformed and can be lined with whatever material a homeowner chooses to use. When it comes to bathroom remodels, Lee said there are many options to fit most budgets. He suggested visitors to the Salem Home and Remodel Show bring a rough drawing of their bathrooms and the sizes to get ideas and options. There really is a lot you can do to your bathroom to make it feel great and not go into debt over, Lee said. 12 Home decor strikes a balance between traditional and contemporary Salem homeowners who are torn between the heavily carved look of traditional decor and the ultra-sleek appearance of contemporary design are finding a happy medium in a more transitional style, creating a hot trend in home decor. The transitional style has influenced everything from furnishings to fixtures and offers clean, straight lines that can be adapted to either extreme simply by changing accessories. It doesn t look traditional, but it s not super contemporary, either, said Rick Herold, manager of the lighting department at Kelly s Home Center. It s almost that in-between style. Ornate, heavily carved furnishings and dark woods are on their way out as designers replace them with simpler furniture and lighter wood finishes. Bamboo also is catching on in Salem, thanks to its versatility and eco-friendly properties, said Kathleen Rustad, manager of Kelly s Fine Furnishings and Design Gallery. When it comes to interior colors, earth tones are perennial favorites, and this year is no different. However, colors are becoming bolder, richer and more saturated particularly the greens, Rustad said. Lighting fixtures also are trending toward the transitional style, with clean lines and large drum shades in neutral colors such as cream, tan or linen. Bronze is a popular metal finish for light fixtures and has been for several By Nicole Krueger Special to the Statesman Journal years, Herold said. When it comes to plumbing fixtures, however, bronze doesn t hold a candle to brushed nickel, which remains the indisputable top seller, said Marilyn Jones, showroom manager for The Fixture Gallery. I think brushed nickel is popular because it will go with anything, and it s used with a lot of different faucet styles, she said. Darker finishes such as bronze are most commonly found on traditional faucets, she added, although they are becoming available in an increasing variety of styles. Finishes aside, Fixture Gallery has seen a high demand for single-handle faucets and high-tech bells and whistles, such as touch or proximity sensors that allow homeowners to turn water on without grasping a handle. Another home decor trend driven by practical concerns is the concept of aging in place, which has fueled demand for amenities such as threshold-free showers, wet rooms with a drain built into the floor and comfort-height toilets that make the bathroom more accessible to elderly residents. Aging in place is probably one of the biggest trends in the industry, Jones said. Because these fixtures are in high demand, they re becoming available in a wider variety of finishes to prevent homes from taking on a hospital feel, she added. Luxuries such as wooden vanities instead of cupboards and vessel sinks, or those that are installed above the counter rather than set into it are also hot items this year. Plumbing in general is more of a fashion statement these days, Jones said. 12 Home & Remodel Show
