Today is the last day to view homes on the Fall Parade tour Shirley Fenimore is always looking for ideas. She pulls out drawers in kitchens, opens cupboards and checks out the storage space, examines floor plans and dining room placement, and takes note of just about every other aspect of home construction. She and her husband bought a home in the Highland Park area and have been remodeling the property for the past two years. She took in the Fall Parade of Homes Sept. 13 to gather inspiration for remodeling. "We have a bathroom that we need to redo. I have some ideas but I need more, and I need ideas for tiling, both in the bathroom and the kitchen," Fenimore said. While touring homes on the Fall Parade, she's also shopping. "I know that my husband and I are going to have to downsize eventually, so I am also looking at areas and floor plans, thinking of the future," she said. Fenimore was just one of many people that weathered the elements on a rainy Saturday to attend the first day of the Fall Parade of Homes, which continues today from 10 a.m. Ð 5 p.m. Tickets are $10 and can be purchased at any Fall Parade home. Children who are carried at all times in the homes do not need a ticket. A tour map is available in this publication and also published in the Fall Parade booklets, available at each home. Attendees are invited to vote for their favorite home. To be eligible to vote, participants must visit all seven of the Parade homes, circle their favorite builder on the back of their ticket and drop it in a voting box, located at all the homes.
Individuals that provide their name and phone number on the ticket when submitting their choice for People's Choice will be put into a drawing for $500 HBA bucks, to be used at any HBA member's business. The winner is selected after the Parade is over by random drawing, and is notified by phone by the HBA office. Elegant and refined abode boasts unobstructed views Dan Fleury Construction Spalding Avenue Gazette Special Section Writer Photos by JAMES WOODCOCK Wendy Winterholler of Billings is in the process of having her home built. She was on the Fall Parade of homes Sept. 13 to take some ideas away for her own home. In the master suite at Dan Fleury Construction's Parade home, she specifically liked the decorative touches, such as the molding above the mirrors. Her mother, Beverly Morrison, who came up from Lovell, Wyo., to tour homes with her daughter, liked the mirrors directly on the walls. She prefers having a lot of mirrors in the bathroom, as opposed to a framed mirror. She's a fan of lighter colors on the walls, and thought the homes she'd seen were "very pretty." Joan Woods, of Worland, Wyo., was in town for the Parade of Homes with two friends. The trio took in the Parade of Homes, and then planned on attending the Symphony. Woods commented that she will remember Dan Fleury Construction's Parade home as "the one with the pretty bathroom." "The bathroom is out of this world," she said, commenting on the luxurious shower and jetted tub with a picture window over it. "It's a nice planned house. I don't want it for myself because I wouldn't want the stairs. I think for a young couple, if they can afford it...it is a lovely home, just a really grand home. The bathroom is number one," Woods said. One of Woods' friends, Clara Strampe, specifically liked the office, with its custom built-in shelving, a storage room off the office, and walk-out
access to the lower patio. Commenting on the basement, she said, "There are also an exercise room and a theater. What more would you want?" Craftsman-style home has plenty of surprises Image Builders Mule Deer Court Gazette Special Section Writer Photos by LARRY MAYER Laura Andersen, of Whitehall, was out looking at Parade Homes on Sept. 13. "It's just something that I've done for about five or six years," she said. Anderson thought Image Builder's home was "excellent," and admired the quality of work and effort put into the details. "Especially the colors that were used, and the woodwork that was done. It is excellent, and the pool was nice," she said. Paulette Stauffer and Debbie Olson, two friends that typically tour the Parade Homes but were touring together for the first time, thought the color scheme and the spaciousness of the Image Builders home worked well. "I think (the home) is beautiful," said Stauffer. Olson, who works for a business that builds trusses for many of the Parade homes, likes to see the finished product. "I see the framed product, but it's different when you see the finished product," she said. Olson particularly liked the interior decorating and the use of candles. "That is one of my favorite things," she said. "This home is a place I could be comfortable." Adele Michels, of Plentywood, tours the Parades as often as she can. She liked the Image home, particularly the transom doors between rooms that create separation while still allowing a flow to the home.
Though she didn't quite know what to think of the office's leather floor, one of the latest trends in floor styling, she agreed it fit the home's style. "The kitchen is nice. I like the appliances in the kitchen. It's got the one oven you can put a turkey in. With some houses you can't do that," she said. Low-maintenance living offered in high-end patio home Image Builders Ridge Stone Dr. N. Photos by JAMES WOODCOCK Joe and Bri Sands, out looking at the latest trends in home design Sept. 13 at the Fall Parade of Homes, enjoyed the open floor plan of Image Builders' Parade house, a patio home located just inside Ironwood Estates. "The home is nice. I like the openness of it," Joe said. He wasn't a big fan of the neutral color palette, with the white painted trim, but Bri liked the home's build-ins, a throwback to smaller bungalow homes of the 1930s and 40s. "The home is a nice, comfortable size. It is not too big," she said. Mike and Dawn Hines are looking to build in about 18 months, and were on the tour to take away ideas for their own home. They found plenty of charm in Image Builders' home, but didn't find it to be their personal style. "It's more modest than other homes," Mike said. They concentrated on floor plans, studying the efficient use of space in the Parade homes, and also esthetics, such as paint colors. The Image Home featured neutral colors, of which they liked, but would pair with darker wood trim. "The trim looks identical to the trim in our 100-year-old house," Mike said. "It looks nice but it's not our style, Dawn said.
Susan Edwards, of Billings, was also looking for ideas, specifically on decorating. She thought the home had an efficient use of space. "It's not a huge house but it's nicely laid out," she said. She likes the master suite, including the built-ins in the bathroom and the walk-in closet to the back of the bathroom. "The layout of the bathroom is a good use of space," she said. Majestic home has secluded location Kenmark Construction Night Hawk Rd. Photos by BOB ZELLAR Joan Michael, her daughter Paula Mjelstad, and her granddaughter Maddie were all touring the Fall Parade of Homes Sept. 13. The three-generation trio were on the Parade to get ideas for remodeling, as Paula just bought an old home that is a fixer-upper. Paula commented on the openness of the house, and specifically liked the kitchen. "I love the fireplace sitting area, and liked the way it's in the kitchen and dining room," she said. Joan commented on the walls' warm golden paint colors, and the Venetian plaster texture. The three all agreed the home had a good feel. Upstairs, two bedrooms connected by a catwalk had a teenage flair that appealed to Maddie. Francie Marble, touring the Fall Parade of Homes with her sister (both of Billings), was scouting areas for her son and his wife, who are building a house this coming year. Marble said the home had an earthy feel that appealed to her, and she loved looking out the home's master bedroom windows. "I look out windows like this and it's like soul food. It just feeds you," Marble said. For Marble, the home's appeal starts on the outside, and continues in. "I come in this house and it's my style," she said.
Sisters Nancy Berger and Carol Fisher, both of Billings, were also touring the Fall Parade homes together. Fisher liked the cozy family room nice and multimedia room in the basement. Berger liked that the kitchen and living room are separate, and commented on the unique double-sided fireplace with sitting area. They noted that all the bedrooms had walk-in closets and both loved the wall colors and the wall texture. McCall home blends eclectic mix of farmhouse and cottage style McCall Homes Front St. Gazette Special Section Writer Photos by LARRY MAYER McCall Home's Parade house at 1615 Front St., besides being dressed to the nines, was covered with personal photographs and touches of the McCall family, who plan to make it their home. "What we've always tried to do in every house is give it a sense of a home," said Greg McCall, homeowner and co-owner of McCall Homes. "Families bring it to life, which is our focus, no matter how we stage the home." Sandy Horning, of Laurel, loved the openness of the home, and got a real sense of family in the home. Though it was the first home she visited on the tour Sept. 13, she commented, "This to me is a family-orientated home. I've been into some where the bedrooms have been adults downstairs, the kids upstairs and it wasn't user-friendly for a family." Horning had high regards for the McCall's decorating style, and said of the home's layout, "You can see they are making it to fit their family, and that's good." Kristy Bick, of Worden, and her husband were touring the Fall Parade of Homes to get ideas for their retirement home they are building on Flathead Lake. She loved the size of the master bedroom in the McCall home, and thought the two-story walk-in closet was "fantastic." In the
master bathroom, Bick liked the idea of three heads in the shower. Both she and her husband liked the strand bamboo flooring and the large family room upstairs. James and Sherry Hoban, of Shepard, were touring homes on the Parade to "see what's different out there." "Actually, that's how we found the builder for our house, from coming to the Parade of Homes all these years," Sherry said. Regarding the McCall home, James said, "We went backwards in time. It's kind of neat," referring to the vintage styles the McCalls incorporated into the home's džcor. The couple thought the playroom in the basement was well done, and James commented about the outdoor patios and the gadgets off the eave troughs. "There's lots of neat stuff," he said. 1950s character packed into modern farmhouse McCall Development Front St. Photos by LARRY MAYER The fireplace was warming the living room at 1621 Front Street on Sept. 13 as some of the first Parade of Homes attendees started touring the house. From orange sodas to Campbell's soup, throughout the home a vintage theme was prominent, as though the owners had taken a step back to a simpler time. Sisters Kim Lowe and Heather Long of Billings tour the Parade of Homes every year, getting ideas for their own decorating. They love the properties built by McCall Homes for their uniqueness, and liked this home for its contemporary-meets-retro feel. Both thought the house was homey, blending all the design and architectural elements together nicely. Judy Lavachek, also on an annual tour of the Parade homes with friends and family (all of Billings) thought the McCall home was an "awesome house." "It has a lot of personality and a lot of uniqueness to it. It is very livable
for families; for anybody. It's not so massive in size, where you go to some of the others and they are so huge. All the different little things (the McCalls) have done is just perfect." Touring mate Joei Uselman also thought the home was "awesome." She felt the personality and uniqueness packed the home with character. "It's very family-orientated, and has just some really cool, fun things." Both liked the home because it was out of the ordinary, and different from everybody else. "It's just so unique," they said in unison. "I think they do a fabulous job," Lavachek said. Patsy Hutsell of Laurel, had a unique way of looking at the Parade homes: She was analyzing how she'd clean all the stuff in the houses. Hutsell, who is a professional housecleaner, said, "I like to look at the new fixtures and the new appliances." She commented on the kitchen's two sinks, and the exposed cable wiring. Hutsell, who was touring with her dad, thought this type of exposed lighting was unique. Overall, she liked the vintage feel. Large floorplan impresses with attention to details Sheridan Builders Rocky Mountain Blvd. Photos by DAVID GRUBBS Sherri Gray of Powell was attending the Fall Parade of homes Sept. 13 with her sister, LaDonna Sherman, of Billings. The two had nothing but good things to say about Sheridan Builders' Fall Parade of Homes. The pair were admiring the faux treatment in the bathroom, a gold metallic faux paint treatment with a tissue-texture. "It's absolutely gorgeous. I wish I'd seen something like this before I decorated my house," Gray said. "Well I guess I still could," she added. "You could do that in your upstairs bathroom," Sherman said.
The two are annual Parade attendees, and tour mainly to get ideas for decorating their own homes. "The master suite, I would want shades on my windows," Sherman said, commenting on the bead treatment covering the windows. Kandis Albertson of Billings and a group of friends and family come out every year "just to get ideas and to see what's up and coming," Albertson said. She "loved" Sheridan Builders' Parade home, commenting that it was "the best one we've seen so far." "I think (the home) has a good layout. It doesn't look like there is a lot of wasted space. It makes sense how they placed things and the colors and the finishes they picked are great," she said. Albertson also commented on the home's grandfather clock. "It is coming back as hip; that's kind of crazy. You haven't seen that forever," she said. Touring with Albertson was Karen Brockel, of Baker. Brockel is building a home and was looking for ideas. She specifically liked the home's garage, which is adjacent to the front, creating an L-shape. "It's not so long," she said. She also said "ditto" to what Albertson said, and agreed it was her favorite home so far. "I love the nook off the kitchen and the formal dining room. It was a gorgeous house, I loved it," Brockel said.
