1 Issue Twenty Two - Spring 2005 New crane saves site work Installing large and awkward glazing just became a whole lot easier thanks to a new crane truck at GlassTech. The specially-built unit features a crawler crane to lift glass around the site. The crane sits on the rear of a new curtain-sider truck which is set up primarily for transporting site glazing. On-site the crane is dismounted and set up in position to lift the glass from truck to building. The whole package is an expensive investment, but it greatly improves our efficiency on-site, comments General Manager Barrie Cummings. It saves a lot of back-breaking work for the guys who previously had to lift the glazing around and it saves a few broken double-glazed units too! Two drivers have been trained to operate the crane. GlassTech s new crane glazing unit goes into action at a Blenheim Road business park development in Christchurch, constructed by Hanham Philp Contractors. Congratulations to the winners of the Canterbury Registered Master Builders 2005 House of the Year and Commercial Awards. In a rare accomplishment among suppliers, GlassTech was involved with every single one of the 22 winning projects across four categories plus the Supreme awards. Some of the projects are highlighted inside this newsletter.

The Best new home under $200,000 was this residence in Bottle Lake Drive, Forest Park, by Stonewood Homes. The Commercial Award over $5m went to Leighs Construction for the retail / office block at the mall intersection of High and Cashel Streets, Christchurch. Contract Construction won the Commercial Award to $5m for the Mitre 10 Megastore on Main South Road, Hornby. The Commercial Award under $2m was won by Hanham & Philp Contractors for the Miles Continental Cars showroom in Tuam Street, central Christchurch.

GlassTech has a tradition of training apprentices and endeavouring to promote from within to ensure that practical experience is part and parcel of our service. A high proportion of our sales and administration staff have hands-on practical experience and trade qualifications; eight of our trade staff are currently undergoing formal training as apprentices.

6 Several years ago the Glass Association of New Zealand (GANZ) perceived the need to create a qualification aimed primarily at sales and administration staff within our industry. The intention was to ensure that knowledge of the Glazing Standards, particularly the part covering Human Impact, could be demonstrated by staff who may not have served a formal apprenticeship. It also allows all of us to remain current in our knowledge, regardless of our experience. Over the past few years draft examination papers have been circulated for comment and amendments made, pilot exams were held and revisions made in the light of results. Finally a very comprehensive examination has emerged. Participants are required to achieve a 100% pass mark to obtain the status of a GANZ Accredited Standards Advisor. The traditional ways of improving knowledge and understanding by serving as an apprentice and being trained by your employer continue to be the mainstay of this industry. Until now the advice and information provided by glass suppliers and glaziers has largely relied upon the experience of owners, managers and staff in the various businesses. Changing requirements in the Standards have left many industry participants behind; they have been too busy or unable to keep up. Through this same period there has arisen the requirement to provide more formal documentation to end users, specifiers and the Territorial Authorities. For example it is likely that today s glass suppliers will have to produce a Design Statement prior to consent and a Producer Statement when work has been completed. From every standpoint, legal and ethical, these documents need to be underpinned first by the knowledge of the individual preparing them and also by the integrity of the company issuing them. The qualification arising from the examination can create a climate of confidence as time passes and awareness grows. GlassTech has entered six of our sales and administration staff as candidates for the exam and have confidence that all of them will succeed. This will provide a good spread of demonstrable industry knowledge for customers, specifiers and the authorities.
