4 This piece explores the concept of space defining sound. It is inspired by the idea that every space holds the potential to create a unique sound, which can be tapped into by using guyline to connect various architectural elements within that space. This piece connects the physical and theoretical elements of a stairwell in Wellesley s Pendleton West building, including the landings, handrails, and typical user interactions. The viewer can pluck each string and thus play the space like an instrument. The piece is site-specific, but in concept, can be installed anywhere, highlighting architectural relationships inherent to every space. The only variable in this piece is the length of the rope, so that its sound is determined strictly by the dimensionality of the space, rather than by the tension or thickness.

5 Upward Spiral MIT 4.022

6 This project asked students to design, calibrate, calculate, and produce the experience of erecting a singular object that defines the space around it. With momentum from an initial force, this piece rolls along its external curve, the bulge of which ultimately pushes the piece to its upright position. While in its initial state, the piece sits statically in its environment. In its final state, the spiral draws the exterior within the interior, and the piece becomes a part of its environment.

8 This project explores the potential of two-dimensional lines to depict the three-dimensional. In this piece, the line accomplishes this in the form of a topographical map. The map depicts my hometown La Verne, and is drawn using charcoal, a material both easy to use and representative of how easily a landscape can be changed. This room was specifically selected as the location because of the potential of the white walls, floor, and ceiling. The map embraces its location in the bathroom of the art studio, covering every surface and immersing the viewer in the line.

10 This model was created as a part of a study of the potential of Punggol Primary School in Singapore to achieve net-zero energy indoor thermal comfort. Today, public schools in Singapore use ceiling fans and windows for cooling. Student concentration, comfort, and productivity are difficult to maintain. Air conditioning costs too much in money and energy to install. In spite of these challenges, the country has a desire for net-positive-energy schools. We used this model in wind tunnel tests, carefully recording airspeeds at the windows of our target classroom block, taking measurements for each of the four levels. We analyzed these tests to determine which façade holds the highest potential for efficient natural ventilation.

12 This project asked students to design the interface between rope and the human body to produce a spectacle of suspension. This interface connects with the human body only in locations necessary for its support. The design was later translated into a full-scale fabrication using CNC machining.

14 This project asked students to select an object from Wellesley College s Lulu Chow Wang dining hall and to research and map its history. The piece utilizes permanent marker and melted plastic cups to illustrate the Lulu Chow Wang s relationship with recycling. Its shape is that of Google Maps directions from Wellesley College to the Wellesley Recycling and Disposal Facility. I installed the piece in a window of the dining hall itself, as the Lulu is the origin of the map and of the plastic cups.

16 This piece explores the concept of sound defining space. Producing sound at an 80 Hertz frequency results in a peak compression level 14 feet from the sound source. Thus, by arranging four speakers 84 feet apart, an essentially silent space is created in the center. The viewer, or more accurately, the listener, must use their auditory senses rather than their visual senses to experience the piece, moving through the sonic space with their ears rather than their eyes. In these drawings, sine waves are used to represent the behavior of acoustic energy, with peaks at moments of compression, and troughs at moments of rarefaction

18 In this piece, sound makes a mark in the form of light. It capitalizes on the science of cymatics, the study of wave phenomena and their visual representations, to create a light fixture that transforms the space it is in. The piece has a minimalist design, housing a speaker within the black wooden cube and a small amount of water within the acrylic base. Internally, LED rope lights is used to illuminate the space. When the speaker is turned on and emitting sound, the vibrations cause the water to move in unique and interesting patterns. These patterns are illuminated by the lights within the fixture and projected around the room. The viewer can select the music played by the speakers to personalize the experience.
