Building homes on the edge of a desert one of the most challenging and dramatic landscapes in nature demands a design that stays loyal to its surroundings, while functioning effectively in a hot, dry climate. For this Las Vegas home, part of the Stone Canyon community, inspiration came from opposite ends of the country, says Blue Heron principal Tyler Jones. We wanted to design and build homes that would be an alternative to the cookie-cutter, quasi- Mediterranean styles you often find in Las Vegas. We ve chosen a look that we call desert contemporary. The exterior is influenced by the colors and textures of the nearby Mojave Desert, while the interiors are a refined take on New Yorkstyle loft condominiums. The 23 homes each follow one of two floor plans. An integrated indoor-outdoor ambiance is key to both designs, with courtyards accessed from the living spaces by 10ft-high glass roll-over doors. Most rooms either lead directly onto the courtyards or have balconies that offer upper-story views. 5 Homes were placed close to one another, so that the courtyards receive gentle indirect sunlight and the interiors are sheltered. Windows are energy efficient, and the thick walls are insulated with recycled blown cellulose. Stone Canyon turned out to be such a successful concept that we are developing and selling similar loft-style communities in different sizes and prices throughout Las Vegas, says Jones. The company that supplied and designed the fireplace slabs, Walker Zanger, also supplied and designed the stone surfaces for the bathroom and shower enclosures, kitchen countertops and pool area. Choosing the right stone surface for your own project is easier if you can view it in someone else s home first. Seeing it in place makes it easier to picture how it could work for you. In the case of this Stone Canyon residence, Walker Zanger supplied and designed all the hard surface materials. As a showhome for the company, as well as a private residence, Walker Zanger took the opportunity to demonstrate unusual designs and finishes, says homeowner Michele Aloe. For example, stone and metal were mixed together in a random pattern for the flooring, and glass and stone were used around the pool area to soften the home s strong architectural lines, she says. At the same time, as homeowners, we wanted a warm, contemporary design, and the choice of tiles and stone surfaces helped us achieve this. Some of the stone chosen for the project was new to the Walker Zanger collection, such as the Iron Red granite for the kitchen countertops. Tiles from the same collection are used for the glass tile panel by the pool, with mini mosaic tiles from the Facets collection along the pool waterline. The tiles are durable, impervious to water, and freeze- and thaw-resistant. Many tiles use recycled glass. A hallmark of creativity is the ability to use the same product throughout a home with very different results. That quality is demonstrated in two glass tile applications in this Stone Canyon home, says product designer Feras Irikat of Oceanside Glasstile. The same tiles Extrados Field from our Elevations Collection were used for the glass tile panel that appears to cascade into the pool, and for the retro-modern look of the fireplace surround. For the poolside panel, Extrados pieces in colors from the company s Enchantment blend were placed in a vertical offset pattern to suggest a waterfall. Extrados tiles arch from the ends to the middle, and this curved profile gives them a multidimensional effect. Elsewhere in the pool, water flows over smaller panels of Extrados tiles. This accents the shimmering quality of the iridescent tiles, says Irikat. Tiles from Oceanside Glasstile are handcrafted for a distinctive artisan look, he says. 9 To enhance the bold, contemporary lines of the house, the designers specified several custom pre-cast architectural elements. The fireplace surround and exterior walls feature pre-cast glass fiber-reinforced concrete (GFRC) from Roma Design. Company director Mario Aloe says that while this project also uses custom-designed and manufactured GFRC panels, the majority of Roma Design s work involves single GFRC cast pieces. With all our pre-cast projects, the color is an integral part of the product. This ensures the walls will continue to look good for years to come, and will never need painting, he says. In addition, there are many other benefits for architects and homeowners. The GFRC pre-cast system provides the look and feel of natural stone, but as it is lightweight, it is a less expensive option. Installation is also less costly. Aloe says GFRC can be used on the second or third story of a house, where the weight of natural stone may be prohibitive. The home theater features a 1080p Meridian/Faroudja projector/ processor, and a 7.2 Paradigm speaker system. Top: A well-equipped games room includes a 10-seat poker table with cameras at each position. Ease of use and livability were the primary considerations for the design of the audiovisual and home automation systems for the home. Acoustic Design LLC, a custom electronics specialist, designed, installed and programmed a custom home automation solution that uses two central AMX 8400 wireless touch panels, and eight hand-held RTI T2C remotes. This user-friendly system controls all the automated systems throughout the house, including the lighting, security and thermostats, as well as the home theater and audio systems. Audiovisual systems from Acoustic Design incorporate products from renowned brands, such as Lexicon, Meridian/Faroudja, Fujitsu, Paradigm, Canton, Autopatch, Kaleidescape and MIT Cables. Acoustic Design also helped design a custom 10-seat poker table, with cameras installed at each position, World Series of Poker-style. The cameras can run with up to a 30-minute delay, and can be viewed from any of the 12 televisions in the house. 11 For any high-end residential property, the landscaping is just as important as the architecture. This project was no exception, which is why the outdoor living areas reflect the modernist design of the house. Nevada Pools designed and constructed the two pools on the site a large swimming pool at the rear of the house, and a smaller spa and water feature in a courtyard at the front. Company owner Tim Kalkowski says the main pool features a complex design of raised, intersecting walls that appear to slice through one another. To add further visual interest, the wall radiates from a low to a high elevation, and forms a backdrop for the custom tiling and stonework. Special features of the pool include glass mosaic tiles, stainless steel weirs, a Seagrass stone wall with recessed glass water channels, and a custom PebbleTec interior interspersed with gold flecks. The courtyard spa and water feature, which have similar glass water channels and mosaics, enhance the view from inside the house.
