2 TAP DESIGN WORKSHOP 2018 MANTOVA. PIAZZA_ DESIGN INTRODUCTION The TAP Design Workshop promotes a multi-disciplinary field-work aiming to investigate issues of sustainability and preservation of historic and natural values within the context of contemporary urban transformations. The program is designed as a two-week workshop where students from the three partner universities Politecnico di Milano - Polo di Mantova, Tongji University and University of Adelaide will work together on a project theme that is different for each edition. A series of lectures will provide additional information and continuous feedback relevant to each stage of the design development. The lectures will be integrated, besides the site survey and the visit of Mantova, by cultural itineraris in Milan, Venice, and in local design firms. TAP DESIGN WORKSHOP PANEL SCIENTIFIC COMMITTEE Federico Bucci, Politecnico di Milano Luca Cardani, Politecnico di Milano Matteo Moscatelli, Politecnico di Milano Tony Giannone, University of Adelaide George Zillante, University of Adelaide Cen Wei, Tongji University Jianlong Zhang, Tongji University VISITING PROFESSORS Ludovica Cappelletti, Politecnico di Milano Cecilia Fumagalli, Politecnico di Milano Marco Introini, Politecnico di Milano Gloria Pessina, Politecnico di Milano Vincenzo Corvino, Corvino + Multari Eran Mordohovich, Technion Israel Institute of Technology VISITING CRITICS Alessandro Balducci, Politecnico di Milano Stefano Guidarini, Politecnico di Milano Vittorio Longheu, Politecnico di Milano Luigi Spinelli, Politecnico di Milano WORKSHOP TOUR / DESIGN FIRMS CZA Cino Zucchi Architetti, Milan Quattroassociati, Milan TAMassociati, Venice WORKSHOP COORDINATION Luca Cardani, Politecnico di Milano Matteo Moscatelli, Politecnico di Milano TUTORS Maria Victoria Dragoni Maria Estefania Gioia Gemma Lonardi PROJECT THEMES AND GOALS The Mantova edition of the TAP Design Workshop series regards the definition of a few intervention strategies for the requalification of the public space in the historical city and the enhancement of its cultural value. Public space, according with José Luis Sert, is the center of the urban life, the place where the city begins and where we can create new centralities, new accumulations of relationships and sensations. Despite this condition, the recent scenery shows that many areas also in the historical centre are characterized by situations of underemployment, abandonment, scarce quality. In a situation that is so variable from the economic, social and cultural point of view, a drift that characterizes our liquid society is the lack of a real place for staying together, fostering new systems of relationships and nourishing the development of public life, preserving memory as the only way for enhancing the identity of our cities and defining a limit to the homogenisation of taste. Mantova is an historical city, a place where history signs are relevant and diffuse, where memory appears in elements that are rarely isolated or autonomous and instead more often coexistent or overlapped, as in a palimpsest of traces left by different actors and in different phases of its life. Our first goal will be therefore the one of recognizing and analyzing these multiple layers and identifying the most adequate strategies to interact with them. For the heterogeneity of the criticities and the potentialities involved, a city as Mantova requires the valuation of different possibile design actions: - the strategy of requalification, intended as the action of redeeming the urban space from situations of abandonment, underemployment or lack of quality, working both with the solids and with the voids, through the urban furniture, through green and signage, in an idea of requalifying as providing the necessary ; - the strategy of enhancement, that can be pursued through interventions of addition but also of responsible and aware erasement, removal and substraction; - the strategy of reactivation, that will require an effort of foreseeing for comprehending which ones, between permanent and temporary uses (the city has a dense series of events, in all the seasons of the year), could participate to transform a space, intended only as a portion of soil, in a practised place ; - the strategy of reconnection, that will coincide with the idea of creating a narrated path (inspired by the Percorso del Principe ), and of defining a few criterias of coherency, particularly in the urban furniture, for making connected what is now separated, for making a system what is now a series of fragments, both from the symbolic and the perceptive point of viewa series of urban fragments, both from the symbolic and the perceptive point of view.
3 TAP DESIGN WORKSHOP 2018 MANTOVA. PIAZZA_ DESIGN Considering the historical value of the sites we selected, the project will be constitued by actions of soft requalification and micro-urbanism interventions, where also the placement of a tree, the design of a bench, a materic variation, a reconnection between different levels, the defintiion of elements for enhancing the historical evidences of each space can be decisive. The selected themes are six. Each one will require the application of different design strategies, also in a combined way: - Piazza Sordello, with the reactivation of the spaces also through temporary structures, that can be employed for the events here organized and with the reconnection of Piazza Seminario and the enhancement of the remarkable historical monuments (Duomo, Palazzo Vescovile, Palazzo del Capitano, Palazzo Castiglioni) that characterize the square; - The area around Palazzo Te, with the enhancement of Viale Te and the ancient gates, and with the requalification of the green spaces between Viale Te and Viale Monte Grappa; - The Gradaro Area, with the reactivation of the existing buildings, the reconnection with the city and with water, and with the requalification of the open spaces, considering also the existing project developed for that area; - Piazza Virgiliana, with the requalification of the spaces between the statue of Virgil and the sports court, thinking about both permanent uses (the services connected with the sports court) and temporary ones (services devoted to the events that take place in the Piazza itself); - Porto Catena, with the requalification of the parking area and the reconnection between the gardens of Piazza Anconetta and water, and a creation of a new system that includes also the harbour facilities and structures; - The narrated path (and Piazza delle Erbe): this transversal project theme will be expressed through the creation of a path across the six stations identified in the workshop project and through the definition of elements (urban furniture, little structures, pavements, signage, info-points) that can connect all the parts. Several lectures will introduce the project themes and goals, with contributions about the history of Mantua and about the specificities of each project site, about the relationship between the city and the cultural heritage, about the methodological importance of an interdisciplinary analysis approach and of the definition of an adequate way of looking at the city, the role of comfort and identity in the project of the public space, presenting several good practises in contemporary architecture and in other design and research experiences (also the previous editions of the TAP workshops) in continuity with the topics of this year. GROUPS ORGANIZATION The 24 participants will be divided in 6 groups, each with 4 students (at least one from each school). The final output of the workshop will be a presentation (with diagrams, drawings, views) and a model 50x70 cm of the design proposal. The laser cut operations for the model should be made in two moments: - Thursday July 12th (from to 14.00) - Tuesday July 17th, sending the files (according with the lasercut guideline) by Monday July 16th at to modellistica.mantova@polimi.it Sun, July 08th WORKSHOP PROGRAM Mon, July 9th > WORKSHOP OPENING9.00 am) Federico Bucci, Vice Rector for the Mantova Campus - Politecnico di Milano Andrea Murari, Urban planning City Councilman, Comune di Mantova Lectures: Cecilia Fumagalli, Mantova UNESCO Chair Eran Mordohovich, The transformative character of public spaces in Historic cities - an introduction Ludovica Cappelletti, An image of Mantua.
