2 MOTIVATION Land consumption: The conversion of undeveloped or agricultural land ( greenfield ) into settlement and traffic areas. Germany, : ~115 ha/day / ~9 minutes ~420 km 2 /year REDUCE!!! Aim: 30 ha/day by 2020 (German Federal Government, 2002) Brownfields: Previously used, now abandoned or underused land with a potential contamination in soil & groundwater as a legacy of previous use Germany (2010): ~1,500 km 2 (+ ~10 ha/day) RE-USE!!! 2 Schädler et al. 8th International Groundwater Quality Conference, Gainesville, April 24, University of Tübingen

16 Conclusion - Integrate spatial data on subsurface contamination, regional economy (risks, values) and sustainable planning (indicators) - Design and evaluate land-use planning alternatives at screening level - Improved site-specific understanding of sustainable land-use planning Not all brownfield redevelopment inherently sustainable but identified options sustainable and economically favorable - Towards understanding the (economic) value of sustainable planning?
