5 WILDisLAND A first draft Concept for a DANUBEPARKS Campaign for Wilderness at Danube Islands and towards a Danube Wild Island Habitat Corridor Georg Frank (DANUBEPARKS Project Manager) & Persina Nature Park

6 WILDisLAND Gravel and sand islands are key habitats in the Danube ecosystem! These sites must not be negatively impacted by further river regulation and should consequently be included in Danube Protected Areas. building up a network of protected islands is seen as a relevant contribution.

7 WILDisLAND Habitat Corridor: Prioritization of Danube Islands as stepping stones with the aim of promoting the connectivity of Protected Areas Initiation and protection of natural processes in combination with designation of wilderness areas are crucial for conservation of floodplain forests along the Danube.

9 Why shall WE have a focus on islands? Key habitats for (highly threatened) species There is the need for conservation!! All Danube Protected Areas preserve islands We have the experience in their protection! Stepping stones to develop Danube wide habitat corridors We have the responsibility to work towards habitat corridors!!

10 What is the added value of a Danube Wild Island Corridor? Clear statement (for river dynamics, for Danube habitat corridors etc.) Coherent and best management (=wilderness) Increase habitat quality long-term (NATURA 2000 is not enough) Impulse for enlargement of Protected Areas Impulse for (re)zoning of Protected Areas Best-practice for Danube-wide cross-secoral co-operation (e.g. EUSDR PA 6 (Biodiv.) & PA1 (Navigation))
