Among our programs and activities: managing the Forest Conservation Program, a high-profie reguatory program that aims to save and maintain existing forest and pant new forested areas protecting and enhancing a connected network of waterways, wetands, and other natura areas preserving wetands and stream quaity whie participating in regiona and state activities to hep protect the Chesapeake Bay and Patuxent Reservoir providing information about the impact of panned deveopment on the carbon footprint researching and promoting green buidings and green urbanism THE CONTEXT With vibrant urban centers ike Bethesda, Montgomery County has become a regiona economic force and a diverse destination in itsef, drawing residents from a over the gobe. Thanks to good panning, the county offers historic sites, cutura opportunities, recreationa resources, urban viages, and vibrant new downtowns. The Panning Department is part of The Maryand-Nationa Capita Park and Panning Commission (M-NCPPC), a bi-county agency created in 1927 to protect open space and provide panning bordering the nation's capita. Economy The county boasts a progressive government and informed, active, we-educated citizens. It offers a fu spectrum of iving environments: dense urban centers, new corridor cities, inviting suburbs, rura communities, and farms. Agricuture, in fact, thrives in Montgomery County due to the 93,000-acre Agricutura Reserve, heraded as one of the best exampes of and conservation programs in the country. In Montgomery County, we take a broad view using a forward-thinking Genera Pan that envisions deveopment custered aong major transportation routes interspersed with areas of ow-density deveopment and open space. Our master pans and sector pans, deveoped with generous community input, guide and use and estabish zoning, environmenta features, and transportation and pedestrian mobiity. Each master pan describes the projects, priorities, and map amendments needed to impement its recommendations. We use state-of-the-art technoogy, geometric design, and panning skis to anayze transportation needs and work with stakehoders to deveop soutions. Our anayses contribute to: countywide growth poicies programs to reduce trave demand with monitoring and enforcement trave demand forecasts incuding traffic voumes and transit ridership transportation requirements for new deveopment county and state faciity panning, design review, and capita program deveopment integrated transportation networks for bikes, pedestrians, and transit as we as for autos We coordinate reviews with other oca agencies and utiities, and pubic participation is a vita part of our entire review process. Our deveopment review staff anayzes detaied project and site pans to ensure the compatibiity of a proposed project with the surrounding neighborhood. Post-approva, we inspect sites to enforce Panning Board conditions of approva.
