DESIGN AND APPLICATION GUIDE VISUAL ALARMS
This guide offers an overview of the new reguations for the seection and design of visua aarms devices (aso known as VADs) in fire detection and aarm systems. Reguations for Visua Aarms the recent changes The reguations for appication of visua aarms have been overhaued and their use is now Reguations and Standards governed by a combination of codes of practice and product standards. BS5839-1:2013 supported by LPCB CoP 0001 BSEN54-23 CPR Buiding Regs. To achieve the right VAD design, a number of simpe steps need to be foowed. This guide eads you through the steps in a sequence that wi deiver effective and efficient designs. EN54 Part 23:2010 EN54 is a coection of product standards that contros the design and manufacture of the components of a fire detection and aarm system. EN54 Part 23:2010 is the section that refers to VADs. It provides a means of ensuring VADs from any manufacturer meet consistent minimum standards of performance aowing systems to be designed and instaed as intended BS5839 Part 1:2013 Code of Practice for design and instaation of fire detection and aarm systems. This recommends that any Visua Aarm compies with EN54 Part 23 LPCB Code of Practice CoP0001 Issued by LPCB, this provides guidance in achieving the necessary coverage with VADs taking into account factors such as ambient ighting CPR Construction Products Reguation EU reguation that ensures buiding products are safe and are compatibe with other systems in the buiding. From Jan 2014 this requires that VADs are certified to EN54 Part 23 and covered by a decaration of performance (DoP) issued by the manufacturer
What are VADs? When are VADs used? VADs are used within a fire detection and aarm system to give a warning to buiding occupants. The atest products use high brightness LED technoogy which is reiabe and highy power efficient. Appications In response to these changes, SMS has redeveoped its range of SenTRI Ceiing and Wa Visua Aarm Devices to provide a range that meets a of the requirements of the standard whist continuing to be the most cost effective soution for visua aarms in fire detection and aarm systems, sma system to benefit from advanced fire detection technoogy and powered oop performance. Our VAD technoogy has been deveoped to be a primary means of notifying occupants without reying on an audibe signa. Typica environments where VADs are critica in providing a warning to occupants: Typicay VADs are avaiabe either as standaone, conventionay powered devices or as inteigent oop powered devices. They may be integrated with sounders or muti-function sensorsounders which offer a very cost effective soution with a high degree of integration. Factories Hotes Pubic buidings Universities Theatres Offices Schoos Warehouses The method of signaing aarms is aways defined by the Fire Risk Assessment. Audibe Signas Bes, eectronic sounders and more recenty voice aarm messages are widey accepted means of aerting a buiding s occupants. Visua Aarms These are used when audibe aarms are not aways suitabe. Visua aarms are an obvious aternative and the BS5839-1:2013 ists exampes of when VADs might be considered. Areas of high background noise where peope might be wearing ear defenders Factories Baggage Has Warehouses Areas where peope might not hear an audibe aarm Offices where peope are istening to persona music payers Gymnasium Ca centres / Teesaes Areas with managed evacuation Cinemas Areas where critica processes may have to continue even in a fire emergency Hospita operating theatres TV studios Perhaps the most common purpose for choosing VADs as aarm devices is to indicate the emergency to a occupants, incuding those who are hearing impaired. Meeting the egisative requirements of the Equaity Act 2010 ensures that a occupants are warned of an emergency situation. SenTRI VADs can be incorporated without the need for extra instaation. What has changed with the introduction of EN54 Part 23? Prior to EN54-23 there were no commony accepted ways of measuring the effective ight output of strobes and beacons. With the onset of new technoogies it is more important than ever to understand how products from different manufacturers using different technoogies wi perform. EN54-23:2010 defines a standardised method to test and measure the performance of each device. It aso specifies the way in which this performance data is represented on the device and on a supporting documentation.
Standard Categories of VAD Cyindrica shape with iumination of at east 0.4ux VAD 16m Ceiing Mounted C-6-16 The basic requirement of EN54-23 is for a VAD to provide an effective iuminance of 0.4 ux throughout a given voume of room space to attract the attention of peope in a room. To assist in the appication of VADs there are three categories defi ning the mounting position and performance of the device. Mounting 6m If the spacing of VADs match the sensor spacing, a singe integrated device can be instaed. A ceiing category VAD is required to provide an effective iuminance of at east 0.4 ux in the shape of a cyinder. The coverage voume is defi ned in the performance category C-X-Y where: Category W Wa Mounted Where ceiing VADs are not suitabe, combined wa mounted VADs can be used. This woud be typica in buidings with high ceiings. Ideay the coverage of ight output wi match the sounder spacing so a singe integrated device can be instaed. A wa mounted VAD provides minimum uminance of 0.4 ux in a cube. The coverage is defined by the category in the form of W-X-Y where: W = Wa Category X = Mounting Y = Width of a square area covered Exampe W-X-Y X Mounting Y Dimensions of square W m 10m x 10m Category O Open Category SenTRI aso has an O-category rating at medium power of O The nearest C-category rating woud be C-3-14 so the O-category aows the SenTRI at medium power rating to be instaed at spacings and heights that otherwise coud not be achieved. O-category VADs must be supported by manufacturing data which fuy specifies the foowing: 1. The recommended mounting position for the device. 2. The orientation for mounting the device. 3. Any restrictions on the minimum and maximum aowabe mounted height. 4. The shape of the coverage voume in which the required iumination of 0.4 ux is achieved, its dimensions and how it is geometricay reated to the device. Category C Ceiing Mounted Ceiing mounted VADs are suited to both sma rooms and arge open areas where wa mounted devices might not cover the whoe room space. They are aso used to possiby reduce instaation and equipment costs when combined with automatic fire detectors. C = Ceiing Category X = Mounting Y = Diameter of circuar area covered Exampe C-X-Y X Cyinder Y Cyinder Diameter C m 16m SenTRI ceiing VADs are designed to optimise the spacing option to match smoke and heat detector spacing. 10m Cuboid shape with iumination of at east 0.4ux VAD 10m Mounting 4.5m Wa Mounted W
How do I design a system with VADs? As a designer the key understanding is to know how many VADs are needed to provide fu coverage within a particuar room. You need to be abe to answer the foowing questions to design compiant systems using EN54-23 VADs. Do a occupants have a direct view of the VADs? What is the ambient ight eve of the room? What is the size of the room (width, ength and height) Are the VADs to be wa or ceiing mounted? What is the coverage rating of the devices? There are three approaches to designing a Visua Aarm system. 1 Design Tabes in BS5839 BS5839 Part and the LPCB Code of Practice (CoP 0001) contains a series of ook-up tabes that define the rating of VADs needed for a reguar sized room space. Information Required Mounting position (ceiing or wa) Viewing ange (direct or indirect) This defines the tabe to be used Size of the room Room height eve This defines the minimum category of device to be used 2 Correction Factors CoP 0001 provides a tabe that aows the designer to cacuate the coverage of a particuar device for different ambient ight conditions. Information Required Mounting position Viewing ange This defines a correction factor for the coverage of the VAD Certified Coverage data for the device This defines the actua coverage the device wi provide Tips Ideay ceiing devices are distributed at the same spacing as point fire detectors and wa mounted devices optimised to match sounder spacings. 3 Manufacturers Toos This method ensures the design may be optimised for the seected product whie ensuring the design wi work aongside the detection and aarm devices. Information Required Coour of VAD (Red or White) Viewing ange or ine of sight eve Room dimensions or spacing This aows the too to show best device and setting for the appication SMS provides a range of toos to support the VAD design using its System PC based VAD design Too A too that matches the parameters of the SenTRI Loop powered VADs with the room conditions and recommends the best soution for the appication. Look-up Tabes for VADs If the too is not avaiabe the tabes in this guide may be used to confirm the best fit for SenTRI VADs in different appications. Tips An accurate ight reading may not be easy to get especiay for a new buid project. Typica ight eves for a wide range of room appications are provided on pages 22 and 23 of this guide. Fied of View A VAD design shoud take account of whether a persons in a room have VADs in their direct ine of site. If this is not known it is safer to assume they wi not.
Five steps to designing with VADs A VAD designs must be done in accordance with the requirements of BS5839 Part 1 and Code of Practice issued by LPCB CoP Simpy foow the steps set out in this guide to arrive at the optimum soution for visua aarms with SenTRI systems. Tips The spacing of smoke and heat sensors and VADs shoud match SenTRI Sensor Sounder VADs can be sited at norma detector spacings for most typica room environments. Intensity Settings VADs with adjustabe power intensity settings deiver more efficient designs ensuring the maximum number of devices are supported. Loop powered VADs Loop powered VADs provide savings in wiring with up to 100 Sensor sounder VADs supported on a oop without the need for extra cabing or power suppies. Step 1 Coour of VAD As we as identifying the need for VADs, the risk assessment wi identify the coour that needs to be used. SenTRI VADs are avaiabe in either red or white, making them idea for new instaations and retro-fitting to instaed systems. Step 3 The performance of VADs depends on the background ight eves. In we it areas the coverage wi be ess than in rooms that have a ow ambient ight eve. Step 5 Ceiing VADs are rated for a certain mounting height. To ensure the correct device is seected the height of the ceiing shoud be defined i.e. the mounting height. To optimise the VAD coverage and ceiing height, SenTRI VADs are aso isted under the open category in order to match smoke detector spacing. Step 2 Line of Sight If the VAD is in direct ine of sight of the occupants, the effective coverage it provides wi be greater than if it s obscured and reies on refections. If the room ayout is not known the safest way is to assume that there wi be peope that do not have a direct ine of site. Step 4 Sensor SenTRI VADs are integrated mutifunction devices. For ease of instaation and aesthetics, the spacing for the VAD shoud equa that for smoke and/or heat detectors. SenTRI VADs are integrated devices that compy at detector spacing, so you can design as you ve aways done. The foowing pages provide some exampes of VAD designs for a variety of environments using the SenTRI VAD Design Too.

EN54-23 Frequenty Asked Questions EN54 Part 23 Understanding the Standard What is EN54 Part 23? It is a product standard aimed at standardizing the testing, output and specification of ight coverage from a visua aarm device. What is a compiant VAD? To compy with the EN54 Part 23 standard, the VAD must have: Minimum iumination of 0.4 ux over the entire area of coverage the device is to cover Stated coverage voume and standardised measurement Fash rate 0.5Hz to 2Hz Fash coour white or red (The new requirements suggest white is the preferred coour on VAD) Do a VADs in a fire design have to be EN54 Part 23 compiant? Any VAD and appication design which is the primary means to evacuate the area must be compiant to EN54 Part 23. How do I know if it s the primary means to evacuate an area? This wi be dictated by fire egisation, the risk assessment and the evacuation strategy of the buiding or area. How do I identify if a VAD is EN54 Part 23 approved? An approved product must dispay the ight voume coverage that it can achieve and this ight coverage wi be third party certified on the accompanying iterature, packaging and on the product itsef. What are differences of the C, W and O casses of the standard? C refers to a device intended to be mounted on the ceiing: C-x-y : Ceiing device C : Ceiing x : 3, 6 or 9 and represents the maximum height in metres that the product may be mounted y : The diameter in metres of a cyinder within which the product is deemed to compy Exampe: C-6-6 denotes a ceiing device that is good for a 6m coverage cyinder when mounted at a height no more than 6m from the ground W refers to a device intended to be mounted on a wa: W : Wa x : Maximum height in metres that the device can be mounted on the wa. The minimum aowabe height is 2.4m y : The width of a square room within which the product is deemed to compy Exampe: W denotes a wa mounted device that may be mounted at 2.4 from the foor and is good for a voume of 2.4m x 6m x 6m O cass aows the manufacturer to gain third party certification for a device with a specific function or fufis a specific appication, eg a narrow beam of ight. This shoud not be a token method of testing an existing device with imited ight output to caim conformance to the requirements. Can VADs be any coour? No, the COP001 recommends red or white. However it suggests that white can be seen more easiy due to the spectrum of coour present in white ight. What considerations have to be taken into account when designing with VADs? The size of the room The ambient ight within the room you shoud consider worst case scenario Whether the device wi be viewed directy or indirecty The ight voume coverage of the device
EN54-23 Frequenty Asked Questions Understanding how EN54 Part 23 wi be appied EN54 Part 23 Understanding the Standard I m not going to know the ambient ight eves. How do I proceed? On a new project, the specifier can potentiay provide the expected ight eves for each room or area. Otherwise, it is acceptabe to make considered assumptions and to document these as part of your design preparation. The FIA CoP001 incudes a Recommended Leve tabe in Appendix B. Once you understand the ambient ight eves, the CoP advises a mutipication factor that you appy to the voume coverage stated on the device. This wi give you an indication of how that device wi perform in that ambient ight. The mutipication factor tabe can be found in section: BS EN COVERAGE DISTANCE MULTIPLICATION FACTORS. I don t know how the room wi be used so I can t say if the viewing wi be direct or indirect. Uness, it s ceary a corridor, we woud advise that you assume the viewing of the device is indirect in the majority of cases. What is a suppementary indicator? VADs that are not approved to EN54 Part 23 cannot be used as the primary means to evacuate an area. They are acceptabe to use ony as a supporting indicator if the strobe is integrated into another aarm device (ie a sounder) that is certified to the reevant EN54 standard. The product shoud ceary state: This product is not a visua aarm device and does not meet EN Q: I have an existing project, after Jan 2014, am I abe to use the devices (non-en54-23) I originay quoted, if I have them in stock or on site? Yes, EN54 Part 23 is a product standard that comes into force on 1st Jan Product suppied after this date must be compiant and it shoud be instaed the BS5839 pt However product hed in stock can be used if it meets the project contract criteria. Q: If I am asked by a customer to add a VAD on an existing instaation, from Jan 2014 does this mean it has to compy with EN54-23? Updating an existing instaation can be considered as a spare. In this scenario the device can be repaced or added with the same device as the rest of the origina instaation. Aternativey the CPR exemption cause coud be used and a site specific order for the oder product coud be raised. Q: BS states I must use EN54-23 compiant devices. I have non-compiant devices in my van, under what circumstances can is use these? After 1st Jan, these can be used as spares in existing instaations, or instaed and specified as a variation. Q: What product can I use in new projects designed in 2013 but instaed in 2014? From the 1st January 2014, manufacturers can ony suppy compiant VAD products, and so the instaation wi need to be carried out with compiant product as recommended in BS5839 part Q: What do I do with my service spares on my van/ service stock? Can I exchange for equivaent compiant device? No, these can be used as spares stock. Q: If I have an od BS / non EN compiant system, do I sti have to appy EN54-23 to this system? It is a product standard and is not retrospective. Additions of od spares is acceptabe.
A Summary of recommendations for EN54-23 System Design and Instaation When designing systems with EN54-23 compiant VADs, we recommend that you consider the foowing questions prior to instaing: Are the VADs to be wa or ceiing mounted? What is the eve of ambient ight? Wi the occupants mainy be facing the direction of the VAD, or are they more ikey to be reiant on refected ight during an aarm? Are there any obstructions bocking the fied of view that coud potentiay affect the VAD coverage? Are enough VADs instaed and positioned to meet the specification of oca, regiona or nationa reguations? For comprehensive guidance on designing systems using VAD pease refer to CoP0001, a pubication jointy prepared by the LPCB and the Fire Industry Association (FIA).
