4 Update Your Labor Law Posters In California, all employers must meet workplace posting obligations. The Department of Industrial Relations requires employers to post information related to wages, hours and working conditions in an area frequented by employees where it may be easily read during the workday. Additional posting requirements apply to some workplaces. For a list of available safety and health postings, visit the Cal/OSHA publications page ( Several publications were either updated or added late last year, so it s time to update your Labor Law posters. CLCA makes it easy to get up to date with laminated 25.5 x 39.5 posters that include all recommended state and federal notices. Order yours today in English or Spanish at CLCA members $34 (plus tax & shipping) Non-members $44 (plus tax & shipping) Posters are rolled and shipped in a tube. Water Management Certification Homeowners and businesses alike are feeling the pinch more than ever from increased water rates, and fines for water waste (especially from noticeable runoff). The demand on landscape contractors to provide more efficient water management is the highest it s ever been. To help landscape contractors and other green industry professionals meet this growing demand, CLCA introduced its Water Management Certification Program in the summer of This program is designed as a practical, profitable solution with a simple goal: to train water managers to provide customers with good to excellent landscape appearance using the right amount of water based on plant requirements. There will be a training and Water Manager Certification Test given March 15 in San Jose at the Santa Clara Valley Water District. clca.org/water-pro//index.php Volunteers Needed The NorCal Landscape and Nursery Show, co-hosted by CLCA, will be at the San Mateo Expo Center on February 11, CLCA is looking for volunteers who can donate at least 4 hours of their time to help with setup and/or running of the show. Volunteers get snacks, free parking, CLCA s copious appreciation and the feeling of doing something good as a team. If you are interested in helping out, please use the online sign up form at If you are unable to volunteer, we would still love to have you attend the show, so please mark your calendar and join us on February 11! 5 president s message What CLCA Means to Me By Calvin Craig CLCA East Bay Chapter President As I begin my service as chapter president this year I want to thank all the attendees and volunteers who made last year a success. I hope to build on that momentum in the coming year. Personally, I have learned a great deal and continue to learn through my involvement with CLCA. I have made numerous valuable connections and now feel I am able to give back through my accumulated knowledge and experience. My first exposure to CLCA was seeing all the CLCA logo in the yellow page ads and on the trucks of other landscaping firms in my area. It always seemed to be the more professional and quality oriented companies displaying the logo. I also noticed the CLCA award winners featured in the newspapers. Though I went to college for horticulture at Cal Poly SLO and gained valuable knowledge, there was a lot I did not learn at school such as employee issues, customer service and marketing. Working for a few of the more reputable contractors both in construction and design I noticed that many were strong in some areas such as horticulture or hardscape and weak in others such as irrigation or customer service. The one contractor I worked for who seemed to really have it together and was successful was Roger Fiske our state President in He also authored The Landscape Standards Book, and I can attest to the fact that he had high standards that appealed to his high-end clientele. He also fought for expansion of the scope of the C-27 license. This inspired me to join CLCA. Like many of you I glanced at the newsletter and attended a meeting occasionally if it sounded interesting. Meeting my friendly competition, commiserating over common issues, comparing notes and discussing exciting jobs etc., was all very helpful. Being judged in our awards ceremony gave valuable feedback from my peers and helped my company promote itself as award winning. The largest gain was participating in the business development group called Red to Black to Green where we hired top consultants as instructors as well as dealt with issues as a group. This allowed me to hone my skills, learn a lot about managing a landscape business and doubled my income while making my clients happy. As a part of this I was required to attend 3 chapter board meetings. What I found was a really cool, sharp and devoted mix of people committed to the common goal of having an organization that promoted professionalism in landscaping, facilitated networking and was simply fun and rewarding. Since then I have been active on the board. That is my story, but this is not about me or the current board of directors. We are here to serve you and need your participation for this organization to serve as best as it can. Some people come to learn, some to socialize and many of our more experienced members enjoy giving back and sharing their knowledge. Please come to whatever event sparks your interest, and if you can put in a couple extra hours per year to help on a committee or be a speaker at an event that would be great. Or perhaps, you re ready to put in a little more by volunteering a few hours a month to participate on the board. Whatever level of commitment you can manage, I m sure you will find it to be a rewarding experience. We plan to send out a survey to see how we can best serve your wants and needs this year. Please fill it out or give me or any board member your feedback so we can all benefit from it. Our first event of the year is on January 13 when we will have two CLCA experts on water management speaking on Understanding and Complying with the New MWELO Regulations. I hope you will be able to attend this important meeting. Our water woes will not be going away anytime soon, so it s best to keep on top of what s going on. January
