4 Success in Business and Personal Finance By Jordan Telford, Business Development Representitive, Horizon Why did you go into business? We all have different answers, but I bet among the top five reasons would be to provide a better quality of life for your family. In today s economy, this is on everybody s mind. Today the average credit card debt per household is $16,000, foreclosures have shattered all records, 68 million families have no life insurance coverage, 43 percent of workers have less than $10,000 in savings or investments, and 8 out of 10 people are living paycheck to paycheck. As a result, 9 out of 10 sixty-five year olds in this country who have worked for the last 40 years are dependent upon family, government, or a job for income. What Past Floods, Droughts, and Other Climatic Clues Tell Us About Tomorrow was the subject of our November meeting with Professor Lynn Ingram, Professor of Earth and Planetary Science and Geography at the University of California Berkeley. Dr. Ingram is the co-author of the book The West Without Water. The book documents the tumultuous climates of the American west over twenty thousand years with tales of past droughts and deluges and the predictions about the impacts of future climate change on water resources. Looking at the region s current water crisis from the perspective of climate history, Professor Ingram asks the central questions: What is the normal climate for the West? Can we count on the benign climate of the past century to continue into the future? At our Novemer meeting, Dr. Ingram focused on the last 5000 years of Northern California water history. Her merging of climate research with paleo climate research You don't want to be in that group, right? Great, so make sure you are in attendance at the East Bay Chapter meeting on February 5 to learn how to prevent being among that group. We will have a line up of heavy hitters from the industry including Tom Brumfield CEO of Siteworks Landscape Inc. located in Berkeley. In the lucrative high end residential market Siteworks is among the most successful landscape companies in the Bay Area. Tom will be helping members better understand what key indicators to watch for in business, how to manage cash flow and price for profit, and the importance of doing the most productive thing possible at every November Meeting Provided Insights on the Future of Water in Our Region By Leeanna Schoeder, Horizon unlocked key discoveries in cracking the secrets of the region s past. From Giant Sequoias telling their secrets through fire scars and tree rings to boggy soil samplings showing drought and drench patterns, weather cycles told a historical tale of long dry periods and catastrophic wet periods. Professor Ingram talked about mega floods of the last century, mega droughts that lasted 50 to 70 years, and the driest year ever in Starvation and abandonment were common among the human population. Most recently we experienced the dust bowl of which ravaged our country, and the drought of 1977 that led to dry lawns throughout suburbia. The mega-drought has been a familiar occurrence in California history. As we all know, life is filled with cycles, and weather is definitely one of them. Dr. Ingram discussed how sunspots and weather patterns are similar in a 100 to 200 given moment to win in business. Fatima Mendoza and Nate Silin of PFS Investments, Inc., will share the 10 most common mistakes people make that prevent them from getting wealthy. Nate Silin, former East Bay Chapter President and leader in the revitalization of the East Bay chapter, will share how you can be more investment savvy. He will help you avoid becoming part of the sad statistics in all areas of your personal finance. This is a Don't Miss event for members who are driven for success in business and who won't settle for less in providing the quality of life their family deserves. The event will be on Thursday, February 5, 2015 so set your calendar now. Location to be determined. year cycle. In addition, she stated we are in a period of warmer and dryer weather. However, this does not always mean little to no rain; in fact it may be the opposite. Warmer weather affects the shrinking snowpack. Warmer weather produces more rainfall and less snowpack which can result in flooding. Without sufficient storage facilities, the water runs off to be lost to the ocean. Floods have plagued the west with regularity over the past two thousand years, including the mega-flood of which resulted in the flooding of the entire Sacramento Valley. This facilitated the moving of the state Capitol to the Bay Area for over a year. Professor Ingram points out that we are unprepared for the effects of climate changes, both the current conditions and those that will continue for hundreds of years into the future. She made us realize it is time to face the realities of the past and prepare for a future in which fresh water will be less reliably available. Like a good spy novel, do you want to know how it ends? The CLCA recommends reading the book! 4 December 2014 CLCA East Bay Chapter

5 Landscape Industry Certified Technician Update Thank Yous and Congratulations to the Newly Certified Technicians! The Landscape Industry Certified Technician fall test was held at Buckeye Ranch in Petaluma at the beginning of October. The event received great support from the local committee and vendors. The site was very full on test day with applicants testing in five different modules, and volunteers on site performing jobs ranging from judging to timekeeping to cooking and more! We had many student visitors touring the site from both American River College and Santa Rosa Junior College. All in all it was a great day! Thank you very much to the local committee and sponsoring companies for their support through time and donations. The test would not be possible without the help of these fantastic volunteers. 6 Chapter Members Experience Southern Charm at Convention in New Orleans On November 12, CLCA members from around the state gathered for a welcome reception at the Royal Sonesta Hotel on Bourbon Street in New Orleans to kick off the CLCA Annual Convention. Representing the East Bay chapter were: Calvin Craig, Peter Rosen and Amy Griffiths, Tim and Bonni Hendricks, Aaron and Liu Huxley, and Roxy Wolosenko. The following three days were filled with important meetings, opportunitites to network with members from around the state and learn a few things about the new normal from General Honore and Jamie Notter and Maddie Grant, and a chance to view and recognize the best of the best in landscape contracting at the Trophy Awards. For members of the state board and auxiliary, Wednesday was a time to get things done with meetings scheduled thorughout the day. The majority of attendees also arrived that day and were welcomed in style at a reception in the evening. Thursday morning keynote speaker General Honore provided an informative and entertaining look at leadership and team building. He defined leadership as the ability to influence others to willingly follow a leader and accomplish a mission. He encouraged leaders to make sure team members know they are part of a team and make them feel like they are not expendable. An effective team will follow a leader through extraordinary circumstances. Honore went on to say that teams need to be taught to adapt and overcome and to have a vision for change. Employees should be incentivized to come up with new ideas and challenged to make things better. Leadership, he went on to say, is the ability to get people to do not only what they want to do, but also what they don t want to do. Honore cited three traits of a good leader: 1. Do the routine things well. 2. Don t be afraid to take on the impossible. Opportunities are on the other side of impossible. 3. Save your best leadership for when you get home. Following the recognition luncheon on Thursday, convention attendees were whisked away to the Garden District for a walking tour of the magnificent homes and gardens in the area. Friday morning started early with an associate members meeting and a presentation on CLCA s new program entitled Marketing Bootcamp. The topic of discussion was building an effective website. The CLCA General Meeting provided an opportunity for the association to carry out a few housekeeping issues regarding changes to the association bylaws and to Above: Calvin Craig shares a story with CLCA State President-elect Javier Lesaca. Let me count the times way too many! What joy there is in a shrub that stays 2 ft x 3 ft, is evergreen, drought tolerant, and deer proof! The only problem is the slightly pink hue to the foliage. Sometimes any pink is just too pink! Enter Abelia Radience discovered recently on a trip to Emerisa, this little beauty is the same size, has variegated foliage, white flower, and compact growth. It has nice red stems, and the flower is a butterfly magnet. Most of all, the foliage is a bright silvery/yellow green and is perfect when you need a more neutral colored structural plant. The plant likes full sun and soil that drains well. It is heat and drought tolerant once established and would look great in a container! The biggest drawback is finding this plant. Devil Mountain recently had a big batch of 1 gallons, but I have yet to see 5 gallons. Keep your eyes peeled! I think they will have them by next year.
