Box 428, Colusa, CA Well, it looks like this year is just about over. I can t believe it! I would like to thank all the board members for their dedication this year, and especially Nate Silin who once again threw a great party for our awards program. And, congratulations to Nate who will be taking over as chapter president next year. I know you ll do a great job, Nate. I have had a great ride as your chapter president. It has been an incredible and growing experience. CLCA is a great organization filled with great people who are always willing to lend a hand or give some advice. My participation at state events -- when I wasn t lost at the top of a mountain -- has given me the opportunity to network with some of the best landscapers in the state. I have learned so much from just talking with fellow members. It looks like we re in for a challenging year with the economy, water situation and pending legislation. I m thankful that CLCA is at bat for us on issues such as immigration reform and water. They have made huge strides in making CLCA and our industry known to the powers that be. We now have a voice in the state legislature and also friends in high places at the federal level. president s messageanother Year Over, Another Just Beginning Please let us know if there is a particular meeting topic or event that you would like to see at the chapter level. We are always looking for ideas (and volunteers) to help shape the calendar of events for the chapter. We are here for you, so let us know what you want. 9 Installation Update Installation Insider: Pondless Waterfall Build In July 2007, Ewing Irrigation teamed up with Aquascape Inc. to build a pondless waterfall at the residence of Bill and Andrea Story in Chico, California. Nearly 50 industry professionals representing 21 companies came together to discover what it takes to build a pondless waterfall and get started in the water gardening business. Barry Elder of Ewing Irrigation sheds light on the products used, practices implemented and challenges encountered in creating this pondless waterfall. Project Scope: The pondless waterfall installation included a small waterfall flowing into a 10-foot-long stream bed. The homeowners wanted to enhance their existing backyard setting with a water feature, but a full-size pond presented a safety issue for their small children. A pondless waterfall eliminated the safety concerns while requiring little maintenance. Square Footage: Approx. 600 square feet Hours of Labor: Approximately 5 Estimated bid for this project: $7,500 Estimated profit margin: $ A pondless waterfall typically elicits a 30-50% margin after material costs, labor, etc. Key Materials: --Aquascape PRO-Fit 10 x 20 stream liner --Aquascape PRO-Fit 4 x 6 liner and underlayment --Aquascape PRO-Fit MicroPondless Filter with 3000 pump --Aquascape PRO-Fit Signature Series -- Biofalls Filter Five AquaBlox Water Matrix --Two cans of black waterfall foam to seal crevices around the rocks --Eight tons of rock, various sizes (extremely large to very small) Additional materials: --Foam kit foam gun, foam, cleaner --Extra silicon for installing the face plate of the skimmer and lip of the Biofall --Pipe cutters to cut pipe and excess liner and underlayment --Flex PVC cement and primer made specifically for flexible PVC pipe --Cover and seam tape to seam and patch 45 mil liners --EPDM tape primer this must be used when seaming with tape --Water meter to measure how much water is in the pond What was the design theory associated with the pond? Our goal was to create a main focal point behind the back patio and build the pond to mimick nature. What were the installation challenges? This jobsite had a deep layer of hardpan soil and root intrusions from a 50-year-old Modesto Ash Tree which made the initial site excavation difficult. With the use of picks, jack hammers, spade shovels and axes, we were able to create a nice foundation for the pondless waterfall. 10 commercial jobsite, you typically don t need to hire a subcontractor to do the excavation work. Before you start digging, be sure to bring out the utility companies to spray paint the locations of the gas, electrical and water lines. How do you determine how many tons of rock are needed? The amount of rock needed for a particular job depends on the type of rock and its size and weight. There is no one-size-fits-all formula for determining how many tons of rock to use, but as you start building more and more water features, you will get a feel for the proper amount of rock to order for a particular jobsite. For this pondless waterfall build, we used 8 tons of Cohasset moss rock of various shapes and sizes. Is there a trick of the trade for moving larger boulders? To move large boulders (approximately lbs), utilize the durability and strength of your underlayment. Place boulders on the underlayment, and with a team of 4 people (one person at each corner), move the large boulders to the desired location. Anything larger can be moved with a small Bobcat or Toro Dingo. What is the rule of thumb for determining pump size? If you chose to install an Aquascape water feature, the pump selection process and all the other product selection steps are done for you with the Aquascape PRO-Fit systems. All you need to do is select what type of water feature you want to install from their catalog, and Aquascape packages the products you will need. To determine pump size, generally, an average-flow waterfall will require 100 GPH per inch of waterfall width and a stronger waterfall will require 250 GPH per inch of width. Take both your desired flow rate and your head height (waterfall height) into account when determining pump size. How big should I make the basin? The size of the basin equals the total number of gallons of water available for your water feature. If you build too small of a basin and there is not enough water to circulate through your pond, then your basin will run dry and your pump will burn up. To avoid this catastrophe, make sure your basin is big enough to hold two times as much water as your stream. To determine the approximate number of gallons in a pondless stream, calculate: length x width x depth x For this particular site, our stream was approximately 10 feet long and two feet wide, resulting in 38 gallons that would flow through the stream at a given time. When you multiply 38 gallons by two, you get 76 gallons, which should be the minimum holding capacity of your basin. For the basin on this site, we used Aquablox. Since each small Aquablox can hold 17 gallons of water, we used five Aquablox, resulting in 85 gallons of water storage space. Before embarking on a custom job, contact a Ewing or Aquascape representative to confirm exact specifications for a given site. 12 December 2008 CLCA San Francisco Bay Area East Chapter
