2 president s message Take Advantage of CLCA Programs By RoxyWolosenko, CLCA East Bay Chapter President Hope you are enjoying the long and hot days of summer and preparing for a very productive fall season. Your board will be hard at work on August 3 planning the last events of the year and setting up the schedule for next year. We would love to get feedback from you about events that you d like or topics you d like to learn more about. If you have suggestions, please relay them to me or any of our board members or attend our planning meeting on August 3. I want to remind you about a great benefit of your CLCA membership--the CLCA Human Resources Hotline! Do you have questions about the best (and legal) way to handle employee or staff issues? Or, would you like advice regarding a specific situation? For concerns about hiring or firing or just general procedures you want to ensure are done correctly, CLCA s Human Resources (HR) Hotline has the solutions you need to make your business run smoothly. What forms are required by law when I hire a new employee? My employee is chronically late for his shift. How can I manage the situation? Can my employees work through their lunch as long as I provide the pizza? Do I have to pay for the tools used by my employees? Protect your business from costly fines and penalties. Call CLCA s HR Hotline today at (800) Another great benefit of membership is the ability to network and learn from fellow contractors from around the state. One of the best places to do this is at the CLCA Annual Convention and Trophy Awards, which will be held November in Scottsdale, Arizona. Get your entries in for the Trophy Awards (late deadline August 15), and make plans to attend the convention. Visit I hope to see you all at our next event on August 1, the great A s vs. Giants game! 2 August 2017 CLCA East Bay Chapter

4 Nursery Memories Did You Really Just Ask That?! By Leanne Schoder I worked at a retail plant nursery for 20 years, so you can imagine the crazy questions I was sometimes asked. Here are two of my favorites. Green Side Up A customer walked into the garden center one day with a discouraged look on her face. In her hand were several bareroot fruit trees that were obviously dead. I assumed she was coming in for a credit or exchange. I was correct, but waited patiently as she told me her story. She explained that she tried planting fruit trees several times over the last few years, but none of them grew or even sprouted for that matter. She said she was embarrassed to bring them in proving to the world she had a brown thumb. One quick look at the trees proved she did have a brown thumb. However, I assured her we would be happy to exchange them and kept the brown thumb comment to myself. I simply stated that when she planted them this time, she should not plant them upside down. Needless to say, she left with three new trees and a smile on her face. Hairball Remedy A customer came into the nursery in a panic holding a brown paper bag--never a good sign. Please help me, he said shoving the bag into my hands. Carefully, I opened the bag to see several round, disgusting balls about one to two inches in diameter. They had bones sticking out, knotted hair and smelled really bad. I found several of these on my patio. Could they be hairballs from my cat? he asked. I first considered if he had a 20 to 30 pound cat, then smiled and said, No, these are owl pellets, and then went on to explain what an owl pellet was. Generally, the pellet contains undigetible matter that the owl throws up to get rid of it. Oh! It's an owl hairball, he exclaimed. How do I give an owl hairball medicine? Landscape Professionals Resource Survey East Bay Municipal Utility District (EBMUD) is requesting feedback to improve the landscape resources offered to industry professionals. Your input is valuable as they develop new tools and resources to promote sustainable landscaping. Thank you for providing feedback on this short survey (5-10 mins). Please use the link below to start the survey. Thank you for your participation! 4 August 2017 CLCA East Bay Chapter

Sponsor Spotlight: Ewing Expands Irrigation Controller Recycling Program By Jennifer Klemmetson Ewing Irrigation & Landscape Supply, Rachio and Blue Star Recyclers have expanded their irrigation controller recycling program to all Ewing locations to encourage contractors to replace controllers with more efficient and fully-featured options. By partnering with Rachio, Ewing is able to provide customers with another advantage: controller recycling for any type of controller. When replacing or upgrading to a new controller, simply bring the old unit in to any Ewing location for recycling. During the 6-month pilot program, 10 Ewing locations collected more than 400 pounds of controllers for recycling. With the success we had in the spring pilot program, we are excited to be able to offer this opportunity to all of our customers, said Warren Gorowitz, Ewing s Vice President of Sustainability. This program is one way of working toward a more sustainable future. When an old controller is replaced with a new one, it is often thrown away to sit in a landfill. Through this program, controllers are sent to Blue Star Recyclers, based out of Denver, Colorado, for recycling. Blue Star Recyclers, founded in 2009, recycles electronics and other materials, while creating jobs for people with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) or physical limitations. Ewing Irrigation and Landscape Supply is the largest familyowned supplier of landscape and water management products in the country. Ewing offers commercial and residential irrigation supplies, water management and sustainable solutions, landscape and turf products, hardscape, landscape lighting, water features, erosion control, industry-leading seminars and more to professionals serving the landscaping, sports turf, golf, agricultural and industrial industries. They also has tools for your business such as job tracking, accurate quoting and express will-call service. 7 Supplier Spotlight: Delta Bluegrass Co. For over three decades Delta Bluegrass Company, located in Stockton, has been producing and installing the highest quality peat and sand grown turf the industry has to offer. Delta Bluegrass listens and responds to the demands of the market, consistently investing time and resources into Research and Development programs. This effort has enabled the company to provide innovative products, including the Bolero line and exclusive California Native Sod blends. Delta s California Native Sod program offers six different varieties, including Native Bentgrass and Delta Grassland Mix, which were cultivated to be the first native lawns that withstand well-timed mowing for urban landscape areas. For bioswales, roadsides, medians, irrigation canals, erosion control, and environmental mitigation areas, Delta s team developed Native Mow Free, Biofiltration Sod, Delta Native Heartland Sod, and Native Preservation Mix. The program also offers a custom-grow option for large-scale projects. These species stay green year-round if irrigated, using up to 50% less water than traditional cool season turfgrasses. In nonirrigated applications, most native sod blends will establish and actively grow during the wet season. They will go dormant during the summer, becoming golden summer fields and then green-up in the fall to become beautiful cool season meadows. Delta s daily deliveries mean you can order today, with sod harvested tomorrow and delivered to you the next day, assuring customers of the freshest product and the best chance for planting success of these native varietals. Jeff Henninger has been representative with Delta Bluegrass Company for five years and was named the Associate Member of the Year at the CLCA State Convention in Jeff has been married to his wife Donna for 28 years. They live in Pleasanton and have two adult children, Shane and Nicole. Jeff served in the U.S. Navy for six years. When he s not working, you can find Jeff traveling, golfing, skiing, playing or refereeing soccer, and spending time with his family. Next time you see Jeff, thank him for his support of the CLCA East Bay Chapter. Please visit the DBC website at or call for a list of Delta Bluegrass product distributors in your area: (800) August
