3 Historical Narrative Architectural Style: Queen Anne Revival Builder: George McGerrigle History: The house was constructed for Henry Belcher of Randolph, who owned the R.H. White Company, a Boston department store. The property originally included extensive grounds, consisting of the main house lot, and the property of the present day Jasper Lane condominium complex. The latter lot includes the Carriage House off of Grove Street. The gardens laid out by Olmstead s firm consisted of naturalized plantings of rhododendron and other native shrubs planted amidst glacial boulders and rock outcrops, which feature was reflected in the foundation of the house and the stone wall surrounding the property. By the 1920s, the house had a new owner, Marc B. Claff, founder and owner of Claff Box Company on West Street, a company that made wooden shoe boxes, and later branched into other types of containers and was a mainstay business in Randolph until it moved to Brockton around Mr. Claff was also one of the first Jewish residents of the town, and was also involved on sundry town committees, including the Coal Board during WWI. Some of the stained glass and other decorative elements may have been added by Mr. Claff in the 1920s. Following Mr. Claff, the house was purchased and converted into a nursing home. The Bri-Mar Nursing home operated out of the house from the 1950 s through the early 1970 s. After the closure of Bri-Mar, the property was owned by Neil and Evelyn Scholl, who owned and operated the Randolph Stationery Store on North Main St. near Crawford Square. They were related to the Claff family. The Scholls lived in the refurbished carriage house at the back of the property. The property was subdivided into the Jasper Lane parcel, which was developed by the Scholls into the present condominium complex. A few years later, the house lot was purchased and developed as an office building, with restoration of the historically and architecturally significant wood, stone, glasss, and metal features both inside and outside the house. An addition was constructed off the west and north facades to accommodate additional office space for business and professional offices, in which use it continues to the present.

5 Frederick Law Olmsted Founder of American Landscape Architecture What artist so noble...as he who, with far-reaching conception of beauty, in designing power, sketches the outlines, writes the colors, and directs the shadows of a picture so great that Nature shall be employed upon it for generations, before the work he arranged for her shall realize his intentions. Frederick Law Olmsted During the later half of the nineteenth century cities in America underwent tremendous changes. More people were moving to the cities than ever before. It became evident that cities needed to be transformed into more hospitable places, and not just centers of commerce. No longer could the leaders of society or the City fathers sit back and watch the Cities operate. Towards the end of the 1850s city beautification became an issue that more and more leaders followed and explored. The theory behind this movement was that the more aesthetically pleasing you make a city, the more people will want to live in that city, and the happier they will be. One of the greatest champions of the City Beautiful movement was Frederick law Olmsted. Olmsted was a the leading landscape architect of the post-civil War generation, and has long been acknowledged as the founder of American landscape architecture. Frederick Law Olmsted ( ) was born in Hartford, Connecticut. He was raised as a gentleman, and while he never fully attended college, he did become a very learned man. When he was 18, Olmsted moved to New York to begin a career as a scientific farmer. Soon after that career failed to take off, he toured Europe with his brother, served as a merchant seaman, and traveled throughout the southern United States as a newspaper correspondent, publishing several books as an outgrowth of that career. Through several connections gained as a columnist with the New Yorker, Olmsted was able to gain the appointed as the Superintendent of Central Park, New York City, in 1857, early in the development of that park project. He soon met Calvert Vaux, who had been working on a design for the park with Andrew Jackson Downing. When Downing died, Vaux approached Olmsted about collaborating on the project. Their plan, titled Greensward, was ultimately selected as the winning design. In 1859, Olmsted married the widow of his brother, John, and he adopted her children. In 1861, Olmsted obtained a leave of absence from his duties at Central Park so that he could serve as the Executive Secretary (the head of administration) of United States Sanitary Commission, an early version of the Red Cross, which was responsible for aiding the well-being of the soldiers of the Union Army during the Civil War. In 1863, he was offered the position manager at the Mariposa Estate in California, a gold mining venture north of San Francisco, and he left the organization. He later returned to New York when the project failed, joining Vaux in designing Prospect Park ( ), Chicago s Riverside subdivision, Buffalo s park system ( ), and the Niagara Reservation at Niagara Falls (1887). In 1883, he departed New York City and relocated to Brookline, Massachusetts with his practice. Olmsted had begun work on a park system for the City of Boston, eventually he focused much of his time on the Emerald Necklace. This along with his work on the design of the 1893 World s Fair in Chicago were among the last of Olmsted s projects. In 1895, due to failing health Olmsted turned the firm over to his partners, and soon senility forced him to be confined in the McLean Hospital at Waverly, Massachusetts. Ironically, Olmsted had designed the grounds of the institution. Frederick Law Olmsted died on August 28, The landscape architecture firm he founded was continued by his sons and their successors until Subsequently, his home and office were purchased by the National Park Service and opened to the public as museum. His papers are now housed in the Library of Congress, while the Olmsted National Historic site preserves the drawings and plans for much of Olmsted and his firm s body of work. 6 My Life and the Mansion After all these years, I can still remember the first time that I really took notice of The Belcher Mansion. I was 12 years old, mowing the lawn at the First Baptist Church, and looking across the street at the Henry Belcher Mansion. Of course, back then as an early teen, I simply knew it as "The Mansion" Actually, it looked like a castle to me! I would imagine the people who lived there, and what their lives must have been like. I figured that they were famous. I also concluded that they obviously had to have been rich. Who else could afford to live in a mansion... a castle! I loved the building then, I loved it growing up, and I love it now. It was always a dream to own this property. In 2004 after an extended negotation of years, this dream came true. Owning... or better yet being a "trustee" of this historic property has been a labor of love. But now, as life often goes, after 45 years in Randolph, MA, my life has led me out of the area. And now that I find myself living far away in another state, regretfully, after 5 years of proud ownership, I must sell the Belcher Mansion. There is much that I could say in the opening. However, for now, I simply hope to find an individual, company or institution which cherishes The Mansion as much as I do. The Belcher Mansion is a property that could not be replicated today, at least not for under $ 3+ million dollars; the architect, the masonry, the materials and the craftmanship. The Belcher Mansion is a magnificent property, a timeless work of art, one with lasting and increasing value. For me " the Mansion" gavenew meaning to the term "Price of Ownership." Michael S.
