4 03 CISabroad.com on-site ProGrAm CoordInAtor SPotlIGht: mary boyington All CISabroad academic tours have an on-site program coordinator dedicated to you and your group throughout your program. They assist in managing the program logistics, student issues, health and safety concerns - you name it they are there 24/7 for you. We recently sat down with one of our On-Site Program Coordinators, Mary Boyington, and asked her some questions about working on the ground with incoming groups. What is your favorite part about being on the ground with a faculty program? I love to plan my own travels, so a job where I can help others plan their travels is like a dream. As an expat I don t get to spend much time with American students and I miss the enthusiasm that American students have when coming abroad. It s great to see them grow from the first moment they see me outside customs to the moment they say goodbye, sometimes just a few short weeks later. on the Ground WIth our StAff And faculty I just wanted to share with you and the rest of the CISabroad team what an excellent experience we had in march with our course in Costa rica. from the early planning stage, through the visit on campus with the class, to the actual experience for ten days everything ran smoothly and all of our needs were considered (course related and personal). the staff was focused on making our time in the country enjoyable and rich with learning experiences. 5 CISabroad.com 04 What is your favorite CISabroad la Vida local Activity to do with your groups? Students are often nervous about trying new foods and often in small groups they don t tend to really get to know local places and the peoples. I like to create food contests and have the students embark on an adventure around the city to try the craziest thing on the menu. They then have to talk to a local about the dish to see how it fits within their culture, family, etc. All the photos are then posted on Facebook and it s incredible to see how many will participate and the number of locals they meet through this activity! What is your favorite thing to do when you are traveling? I like to go to one must see museum or monument, and then the rest of the time is spent in local cafes and local hang-outs... people watching. To me it s all about relaxing and really taking in what is different about the place from where I live. What is your favorite destination and why? I actually don t have one favorite, but I recently traveled to Poland and the people were so welcoming and it was such a lovely place that I could find myself heading back there to discover the parts that I didn t get to see. It was really authentic and not as touristy, which is always a huge draw for me in any new destination. CISabroad has designed la Vida local activities that allow your students on short-term programs to engage with the local community and learn what it s like to truly live like a local. I truly cannot thank you enough for all your time and efforts on our Istanbul Program this year. the collaboration with you was such a smooth and seamless process, and you all went above and beyond what was anticipated. this program has exceeded expectations on all fronts. With our combined efforts, we are so pleased to have solidified a new program that offers students an excellent academic, cultural, and personal experience while abroad. they have gained so much from this experience, and have connected to their coursework in way that is simply not possible when taking a class domestically. thank you so much, and we look forward to working together on future programs!
