2 FIRST LEVEL UNIVERSITY MASTER S DEGREE IN URBAN INTERIOR DESIGN Design of the Public Realm in Contemporary Cities II edition Joint master s program with Escuela Politecnica Superior, Universidad San Pablo CEU (Madrid) The Master in URBAN INTERIOR DESIGN is a post-graduate program dedicated to developing new perspectives on critical issues in the contemporary Urban Realm through theory, research, design and practical training. It is a challenge to pay attention to the seams between elements in a city, the interstitial spaces: to mind the gap so to speak. We live in cities and systems of cities. Alone, with many. We are pedestrians, drivers, passengers, citizens, travellers, inhabitants, outsiders, unsolicited designers, unexpected users. We live a time of economic, urban and demographic growth without precedent. We have ahead of us the challenge of giving concrete form to the complex spaces that house new collective needs and opportunities. [MUID] The Master in URBAN INTERIOR DESIGN: Design of the Public Realm in Contemporary Cities is a graduate program dedicated to developing new perspectives in the contemporary public realm through theory, research, design and practical training. It is a challenge to pay attention to the seams between elements in a city, the interstitial spaces: to mind the gap so to speak. interstitial voids, urban gardens, terrains vague, in relation to their use, equipment, furniture, communication and underground networks. [MUID] responds to the growing demand of this sort of professional in the public sector, a leading professional able to analyse and understand the different aspects and elements that influence and give form to collective spaces, in order to provide with new design solutions according to our place and time. [MUID] educates the professional figure of the URBAN INTERIOR DESIGNER, that is, the designer of un-built areas: a leading professional with a specific expertise that blends the knowhow of architects, designers, interior designers and art operators, able to provide with design strategies for preservation, transformation and creation in a precise area of intervention that has become strategic in Contemporary Cities: the Public Realm. [MUID] studies the ground floor of cities including all exterior and in-between spaces, linkages and built form elements that are physically and/or visually accessible for gathering or recreational use, regardless of ownership - spaces such as squares, pedestrian paths, 2

3 DIDACTICS The city, with its open spaces, is a theater for shows and cultural events but also a generator for new forms of space consumption. This allows each of us to build our own neighborhood, to follow a personal script that sets out new itineraries through identity, identities based not so much on shared values as on multiple modes for approaching and consuming physical space. Therefore, these locations need to be able to accommodate multiple purposes that weave different storylines together. Such purposes are often unforeseeable and increasingly depend on short-term outlook for use. However, this does not mean foregoing endowing such spaces with their own character. Rather, it means we must begin to conceive of such urban spaces as crossroads for differing purposes by dressing them with renewable furnishings that nevertheless lend meaning, explore the depths, and rediscover bygone value that has been liberated from the need to be time devoted to a particular purpose. The Contemporary City Another use mode will be part of today s city in the narrow sense. In this case the theoretical and design work will hinge around the city s ground floor in the sense of border areas, open areas, and architectural areas at ground level, spaces destined for long-term use. The outlook thus belongs to the discipline of architecture, though oriented toward reversible projects that take into account the speed at which such locations are repurposed, given that changing modes of use is the contemporary nature of urban settings. This training enables students to identify the planning context for public space (permanent, temporary or virtual), produce guidelines for transforming public space, build scenarios for urban planning policy, and characterize specific planning solutions. The master s program uses ENGLISH as its official language. A Four-phase Master s Program Phase 1: MADRID Topics will focus on the container of the public realm in contemporary cities. The construction of urban space is a complex activity involving the interaction of concepts, methodologies and concrete results that respond to the needs of citizens who programme and use it. Topics are structured in the following theory and workshop categories: Urban Practices, Urban Materiality, Urban Architecture, Urban Consensus, Urban Semantics, Urban Technologies. Phase 2: MILAN Topics will focus on the content of the public realm in contemporary cities in the context of the upcoming EXPO2015. Topics are structured in the following theory and workshop categories: Urban Events (up to 3 days - ephemeral events), Urban Settings (up to 3 months - exhibit the city) and Urban Interiors (up to 3 years - contemporary liveable public) Phase 3: Joint Workshop MADRID + MILAN Students will present their work at the Salone del Mobile in Milan. Phase 4: INTERNSHIP + FTP The Internship and the Final Thesis Project make up phase 4 of the program. The internship is to be performed at studios, enterprises, institutions, and government agencies, in an international context. It lasts eight weeks. In the Final Thesis Project students reconsider the work developed during the internship in theoretical terms and in a design framework. Students will be jointly mentored by one faculty member and one professional expert from the organization for which the internship is performed. Schedule The Master will start on January 2015 and will last for 12 months. Courses are 4 days a week, full time. The internship will last 330 hours. 3

Professional Outcomes Expected professional outcomes include: freelance consulting either independently or as part of complex design-production organizations (professional studios, engineering firms), publicsector city-furnishing manager, consultancy for manufacturers of outdoor materials, furnishing or equipment, consultancy to enterprise consortia involved in retrofiting and/or rehabilitating former business or industrial districts. Selection Venue: Milan and Madrid. Requisites: curriculum vitae, motivation letter, portfolio with 4 significant works, personal interview (possibly online) Prerequisites: Degree in Interior Design, Architecture, Interior Architecture, Scenography, Urban and/or Environmental Studies [MUID] students had an international, interdisciplinary, multicultural background, coming from Canada, Iran, Italy, Mexico, Lebanon, Pakistan, Spain, Uruguay, and Vietnam. Title obtained First Level Master Degree, corresponding to 60 ECTS.
