1 CIEE Lisbon, Portugal Course name: Lisbon: City and Architecture Course number: AHIS 3003 LILC Programs offering course: Lisbon Language and Culture Language of instruction: English U.S. Semester Credits: 3 Contact Hours: 46 Term: Fall 2018 Course meeting times: Tuesdays 10:00-12:30 am and Thursdays 10:00-11:30 am Course meeting place: Room 606, Tower B Professor: Joana Estorninho de Almeida, PhD Contact Information: jalmeida@ciee.org Course Description This course covers the history of Lisbon from Roman times to the present by analysing selected aspects of urbanism and architecture and their relationship with Portuguese and international historical contexts. In this course students will have the privilege of visiting World Heritage Monuments and Cultural Landscape and learn how to understand urban development and to read historical buildings. Learning Objectives This course provides an overview of important themes in Lisbon s architecture and urbanism, and of some important monuments in Lisbon s outskirts. In this course, students will develop their seeing and critical skills as a way to understand the history of the city. We will pay special attention to Lisbon s topography, the development and role of each neighborhood and the significant buildings that characterize a quarter or a particular period in time. Course Prerequisites No prerequisites. Methods of Instruction The course will be organized in lectures and in-field classes. In the classroom, we will analyze and discuss strategies of seeing architecture and urban development, the main periods of the history of
2 Lisbon and its main buildings. In each study visit, we will explore an area of the city or a particular building, corresponding to an important subject of the history of the city and its architecture. Assessment and Final Grade In addition to attendance and participation, the methods of assessment are listed below indicating the percentage of each element in the final grade: Journal 20% Midterm 20% Two posts 20% Final Essay 40% Course Requirements Journal Students should record in a journal information from each lesson: images, drawings, stories or other elements that caught the student s attention and should be kept as a memory so that they can be used for their assignments. The use of art history concepts and vocabulary is required. Midterm In middle of the course, students will have to answer an in-class test. Images of buildings, maps and other representations will be presented and students will have to identify them, adding a description and contextualization. Two Posts Students will have to write two short texts on two of our visits. Each text must consist of a very short description of the visit and of the buildings visited within a historical contextualization of the neighbourhood and of a personal analysis of the lesson (max 20 lines). Critical thinking is expected. The best posts will be selected to be published in the Blog/Facebook page of the class. Final Essay The essay should have between 1000 and 1200 words. Choose a building, an object or a detail from the lesson that interested you the most. Create a point of view and construct a narrative that contextualizes the history of that building, or that object. Don t forget to focus on the history of the building and the relationships with its urban and historical contexts to understand the neighborhood s specific characteristics built through time. Show attention to aspects discussed during the visit, put into practice concepts learned through readings and develop your own personal sensitivity and interests. Plagiarism Note that un-credited use of someone else's work or ideas will be considered plagiarism. Essays with total or partial forms of plagiarism will be graded with a ZERO. For more information on plagiarism, see
