1 On September 2014, will be held in Angers The event that cannot be ignored by Carrot and other Apiaceae chains From the 17 th to 19 th September 2014, Agrocampus Ouest, the CTIFL and Carottes de France are pleased to invite you to the International Symposium on Carrot and other Apiaceae held in Angers, France, under the Aegis of ISHS (International Society for Horticultural Science). Growers, industry and researchers will share experience and results in the areas of production practices, genetics and breeding, biology and plant protection, food technology and product quality of carrot and other Apiaceae species Mathilde Briard Emmanuel Geoffriau F. Villeneuve Emmanuel Geoffriau Philippe Roy 1

2 Why this symposium? On 2007, France welcomed in Arcachon the 32 nd edition of the International Carrot Conference. For the first time in Europe, scientists, growers and industry of Carrot chain, joined a three day very fruitful meeting. This event was a great success with 500 participants from 32 different countries and a very well appreciated quality of oral presentations and visits! Seven years later, Agrocampus Ouest, the Ctifl and Carottes de France wish to create a new event in Europe in order to have growing industry and international research meeting together and updating their knowledge about last technical and scientific innovations on Carrot. They also decided to enrich exchanges with discussion about other Apiaceae such as Fennel, Parsnip, Parsley, Celery Some French Carrot production figures On 2011 France with tons produced on ha (source: AGRESTE) was the third Carrot producer in Europe, Poland and Great Britain being the first two (source: EUROSTAT 2008). 38% volumes are processed (source AGRESTE). Carrots for Fresh market are mainly produced in two geographic zones: An historic zone, the Basse Normandie where product quality reputation is recognized by consumers (Label rouge Carottes de Créances, carottes des sables). Harvesting period spread over 10 months from July to April the year after. A more recently developed zone which releases a high quality and quantity production for early segment the Aquitaine. Harvesting period is beginning on the end of May and finishing on April the year after. Source : FranceAgriMer/SSP 2

3 Why organising this event in Angers? Even if Angers is not located in the heart of carrot production areas, this town is a good choice to promote such an event. Angers hosts important plant research institutes and private companies. Pays de la Loire region is a hot spot for seed production as main international seed companies are located in a 10 kilometer round area in the Authion valley, less than 45 min from Angers. Situated in the UNESCO Loire region, Angers is well known for its wine-tourism, natural surroundings and famous history. But beyond its tradition and aesthetical appeal, this human-sized city offers much more than meets the eye! Awarded best city for quality of life in France, Angers rests on the beautiful Loire River only ninety minutes south of Paris and London. Ranked the third biggest urban center in the Grand-Ouest with over inhabitants and students, the city lives up to its reputation as a practical and attractive location for events. The three organizers of the symposium also choose to get together scientists, technicians and growers of the vegetable chain in Angers because it is easy to reach, because of its richness of facilities for international events like the Angers Congress Center and the Exhibition Center and because of its diversity of private companies or research centers involved in plants. Fruits, ornamentals, trees, vineyards, aromatic and medicinal plants are all growing in Angers region. Angers is a unique economical and scientific center in France or even in Europe focused on plant. The event is organised in collaboration with Bureau des Evènements Angers Loire Tourisme and GEVES (Groupe d'etude et de contrôle des Variétés Et des Semences). The program!!! The Symposium is structured in three stages: 17 th and 18 th September 2014: two days dedicated to conferences and exchanges in Angers Congress Center. 18 th September 2014: gala dinner in the prestigious Greniers Saint Jean in Angers 19 th September 2014: a one day trip for field and companies visits with a demonstration time organized for all participants in GEVES experimental farm (Variety and seed study and inspection group) in Brion. Angers Congress Center 17th and 18 th September 2014: During two days, the symposium will be organized in plenary and specialized (scientific and technical) sessions and will address the major current issues of the production of carrot and other Apiaceae: Market and consumer expectations Genetics and genomics Genetic diversity including wild relatives Biology and Physiology Cultural pratices: fertilization, irrigation and weed control Quality of products and post-harvest (transport, health impact...) Host / parasite interactions, Integrated Pest Management Pathogens: knowledge, risk management, protection means 3

The final program will be available in June th September 2014 Gala dinner in the prestigious Greniers Saint Jean in Angers: In the very heart of Angers city centre, the Greniers Saint Jean is one of the oldest illustrations of French hospital architecture. This imposing building was built after The fine decoration and the number of bays in the grain loft are surprising for a simple supply store. The best time and place to discover the FRENCH GASTRONOMY (UNESCO) and to taste the selected menu with its Loire Valley wines! Friday 19 th September Professional tours Professional tours include: a thematic visit in the morning lunch and visit at GEVES experimental station (common to all) in the afternoon (trials, workshops, exhibitions, meeting points) The morning thematic visits will be: Public research (Institute of research on horticulture and seeds) Aromatic and medicinal plants Plant breeding seed company Seed technology Seed chain and official seed quality control (SNES / GEVES) Production (farm visit) Organic production and participatory breeding Food processing Saturday 20th September Optional touristic visit 4

Using integrative approaches ranging from the gene to the field, the institute addresses the challenges facing management and improvement of quality of seeds and key horticultural crops including roses and other ornamentals, pipfruits and vegetables ( Ctifl (Centre Technique Interprofessionnel des Fruits et Légumes) Established in 1952 under the law passed on 22nd July 1948 concerning Industrial Technical Centres, Ctifl is a non-profit organization. All experimentation, studies, training and publications are aimed at improving the level of expertise necessary in all sectors of the fruit and vegetable industry, as well as improving company performance. Ctifl is particularly involved in carrying out work of general interest to the public sector under the aegis of the government. In answer to consumer concerns Ctifl s expertise contributes to managing quality, to guaranteeing food safety and hygiene as well as traceability, to preserving the environment and to striving for sustainable development. Facing society s demands and the challenges of tomorrow, Ctifl aids communication and consultation between all those involved in the fruit and vegetable industry. From the grower to the retailer, each sector is represented in the decision-making bodies: board of directors, executive board and committee Carottes de France Created in 2009 and recognized by the Ministry of Agriculture as National Association of Producer Organisations (AOPn) in 2010, the Association Carottes de France brings together, represents and defends the interests of French carrot producers for fresh market. It brings together nearly tons of carrots produced mainly in Aquitaine, Normandy and the South East of France (60% of national production). Its actions cover areas as diverse as knowledge about production or markets, the policy guidance in terms of research and experimentation at the national level or the communication to the general public on the core product. Today, Carottes de France is the interlocutor of the industry and government on all issues related to carrot production in France. 6
