Waterford Greenway is a spectacular 46 km off-road cycling and walking trail along an old railway line which takes you from the quays of Ireland s oldest city all the way to Dungarvan. E: waterfordgreenway@waterfordcouncil.ie T: THINGS TO SEE AND DO THOMAS FRANCES MEAGHER BRIDGE The longest single bridge in the Republic of Ireland at 230m, spanning the River Suir between Waterford and Kilkenny. RIVER SUIR, SPECIAL AREA FOR CONSERVATION An important wildlife area for a number of protected species such as Otter, Salmon, Lamprey and Shad. KILMACTHOMAS VIADUCT Opened in 1878, this eight arch rubble stone viaduct passes over road, millrace and river. CLOUGHLOWRISH STONE A legacy of the last Ice Age, legend has it that a lie must not be told here for fear of the enormous rock splitting in two. Exit the Greenway at Carrigarea, go 2km west, view from Cloughlowrish Bridge. Viking site here that predates Waterford City. Artefacts are on display at Reginald s Tower, see WaterfordTreasures.com. Site is not accessible, but can be seen from Killoteran Bridge, east of Killoteran Stream. MOUNT CONGREVE One of the great gardens of the world, known for its collection of Azaleas, Camelias and Rhododendron and magnificent walled gardens. MountCongreve.ie KILMEADEN CASTLE DURROW VIADUCT Built c over the River Tay DURROW DANCEHALL Local Dancehall in use in the 1940s and 1950s. BALLYVOYLE TUNNEL Built in 1878, this Iconic feature of Waterford s railway heritage is a quarter of a mile long and fully brick lined. Closest Access Point: Shanacool BALLYVOYLE VIADUCT Constructed in 1878 and blown up in 1922 during the Irish Civil War, rebuilt in This le Poer Castle was captured and destroyed by Oliver Cromwell c DUNGARVAN BAY SPA, SPECIAL AREA FOR CONSERVATION WATERFORD & SUIR VALLEY RAILWAY A narrow gauge heritage railway follows 8.5 km of the disused railway, from the station at Kilmeadan out along the River Suir. wsvr.ie Closest Access Point: Kilmeaden WORKHOUSE, KILMACTHOMAS Built in 1850, buildings included a chapel, fever hospital and mortuary. Bike hire available at the Workhouse. Important wildlife area particularly for wintering birds including Brent Geese, Golden Plover and Godwits. Seals and otter are also frequently sighted. WALTON PARK Named after Ernest Walton, , Physicist and Nobel Laureate. The first person in history to artificially split the atom.

5 GREENWAY ROUTES - OPEN SOON GREENWAY ROUTES - OPEN NOW! OPEN SOON Kilmacthomas to Shanacool Waterford City to Mount Congreve 8km MOSTLY FLAT. SOME MODERATE INCLINES AND DECLINES 13km MOSTLY FLAT SURFACE, OCCASIONAL MODERATE INCLINES AND DECLINES Starting on the quays of Ireland s oldest city, the Greenway slowly winds its way out of the urban setting alongside the old narrow gauge railway track, beside the sweeping estuary of the River Suir and past Woodstown, where Vikings from Norway first settled in Waterford. It continues through beautiful woodlands, past stone limekilns, to the riverside of Mount Congreve; one of the great gardens of the world. Past the workhouse, you ll find more places to exit and stop for refreshments in Kilmacthomas, you can also get great views of the viaduct from the village. Back on the Greenway and set off through valleys with views of the Comeragh mountains to the north. Cross over Durrow Viaduct and past ivy-covered Durrow Station where ruins of the old railway platform and waiting rooms still stand. OPEN SOON Shanacool to Scartore Mount Congreve to Kilmeaden 2km MOSTLY FLAT SURFACE, EASY GOING Looking for a bite-sized experience of the Greenway? Then this is for you. Passing the medieval ruins of a Norman Castle, the trail moves through quiet woodlands to Kilmeaden, where you can stop for refreshments and maybe even take a ride on the Waterford & Suir Valley heritage train. This short stretch is very suitable for those with small children or those with reduced mobility. OPEN SOON Kilmeaden to Kilmacthomas 13km MOSTLY FLAT SURFACE, OCCASIONAL MODERATE INCLINES AND DECLINES You re now heading deep into the lush Waterford countryside, with farm animals and wildlife to keep you company. Look out for the chimney tower of Fairbrook Mill; an 18th century paper and later woollen mill. Enjoy the stunning views of the Comeragh Mountains to the North. Here there is a tranquil silence interrupted only by birdsong. You ll arrive at the old famine workhouse. 6km FLAT FOR 2KM, THEN MODERATE DECLINE TOWARD SCARTORE Another bite-size way to enjoy the Greenway, this spectacular section travels through the atmospherically lit 400 metre long Ballyvoyle Tunnel (children love the tunnel it s great for making echoes!) and then over the historic Ballyvoyle viaduct which was blown up in Smell the sea in the air as you reach the Copper Coast and round the headland to breathtaking views of Clonea Strand. Scartore to Dungarvan 4km FLAT SURFACE, EASY GOING The final leg of the Greenway is an enjoyable clear run along the coastline, over the causeway, through Abbeyside and all the way into the historic port of Dungarvan, a buzzy seaside market town with a strong foodie vibe and a picturesque quayside setting. The beautiful journey comes to an end in Walton Park right in the centre of Dungarvan.
