18 College Green is an architectural set-piece that has the potential to become one of the most important civic public spaces in the history of Ireland. Without European support the democratic values of culture and architecture may remain at very low levels. This time lag of political social and human intervention may continue the preference for Euro monetary values above and beyond human and cultural needs. Professor Wickham called for the pedestrianisation of College Green in order to create a major public space at the centre of the city: The pedestrianisation of College Green needs to be put back on the agenda... It could be transformed into one of the great public spaces of Europe, on a par with the Piazza Maggiore in Bologna. Symbolism can be understood and interpreted in subtle forms. It can be understood without borders it can be marginalised. Symbolism draws from nature and how true beauty comes from within. In an Irish context there are national symbols and a craft that have been lost in modernism. These symbols if handled well unite people and give hope. The symbolism of restoring the Bank of Ireland branch on Dublin s College green to State ownership is inescapable. (A Dublin Smithsonian and our own St Mark s Square - The Irish Times - July ) If emerald green Saint Patricks day on the 17 th of March every year can turn rivers green and each year the American president is presented with a bowl of Shamrocks. Why can the Irish people not realise the dream of one of the most important public spaces in the country? Just as the late 19 th century advocates of the Celtic revival restored the spirits of a nation by drawing on the literary traditions of an earlier era (A Dublin Smithsonian and our own St Mark s Square - The Irish Times - July ) The government wants to redevelop Dublin s College Green to put it on par with the great square of Venice, London and New York. (Plan to make College Green one of the world s great squares. The Irish Times Saturday July 9, 2011) President Obama and Bill Clinton have spoken at College Green however planners and designers are still hamstrung by the biggest cross disciplinary celtic knot in the city.
