3 Page 3 Committee Updates The Learning Garden The plan is for June 1 to kick off with mulch delivery! Our two main paths are to be mulched as well as our perennial plants and small paths. Now that our garden is up and growing, I know that we are all anxious to harvest some crops. Just as in years past, we plan to take our produce to The Food Bank s Central Pantry on Big Bear Blvd. If you are interested in additional information about this community service, here is the link to the pantry: We held our Third Thursday on May 21 st with 12 attendees. Alex Riddles and Ellen Condron presented on Intensive and Successive Planting. You might have seen that Julie Deering placed information about the sessions in The Columbia Tribune. Our next Third Thursday will be held on June 18 at 6:30 pm. Don Day has agreed to provide information on Proper Watering, Weeding and Mulching. We are happy to have NEW and old Master Gardeners come to help us on any work day you have time. We work Mondays at 9:00 am and Thursdays at 5:15 pm. As the summer continues to become hot and dry out a bit, these two work days should provide twice weekly deep watering and harvesting. 4 Page 4 Getting to know our Masters..Charles Paxton I am a Master Gardener Intern and just completed the introductory courses last winter. I have been studying or working in horticulture for about 40 years. My experience has taught me that there is a lot to learn and I really like being in a position to learn. I am very proud of my intern status; I intend to always be an intern. I grew up on a cattle/sheep ranch in the mountains of Colorado. Beautiful landscapes are the norm on the ranch and it does not take much input from an individual. Being interested in plant material is also a normal part of life on the ranch. Vegetable gardening, fruit orchards and harvesting from nature were all just part of how life was at the time. I earned a B.S. in Horticulture with emphasis in Nursery and Landscape Management from Colorado State University. After college I worked for the Denver Botanic Gardens for about five years as the Superintendent of Chatfield Arboretum. The Arboretum was a new site without many established trees. When an opportunity to work at the University of Missouri came up I was intensely interested. The fact that there where large trees and an established landscape to work with fascinated me. I have worked on the campus now for 28 years. I have been blessed with a great opportunity at MU. I have worked with an encouraging administration and a great group of groundskeepers and gardeners. We have transformed the campus grounds into a garden during this time. I will be retiring from MU soon. I will miss the social and professional contact that my job provided. My goal is to stay active during retirement. I would like to continue to be involved in horticulture and be in a position that I can learn from others. I also believe that I need to give as much back to the community as I can. I have had an opportunity to meet many of the Master Gardeners over the past few years. I would like to get to know all local Master Gardeners better and look forward to working with them on future projects.
