2 WASTE COLLECTION TOOLS RECYCLABLE MATERIAL Where to buy your bin All citizens are required to purchase a 360L blue rolling bin for recyclable material and a gray bin for household waste. These 360L bins are available at: Rona le Quicailleur 25 John Savage BMR 21 des Carrières Canadian Tire, Rona and other large surface stores Mobile bins for recyclable material are also available at the City of Bromont ( ). How to position your bin: On your driveway, next to the street or sidewalk. The wheels of the bin should face the house, the lid should be closed and there should be nothing on the bin. 1m One metre from any other object, especially your vehicle, to avoid damage. If you have two bins they should be set one meter apart. Do not leave any waste material on the ground near the bin: this will not be picked up. You may however place recyclable material adjacent to the bin. Recyclable material is to be placed in the blue bin and is picked up every Thursday. By increasing the frequency of pick-ups, the City of Bromont hopes to increase the amount of material that can be recycled each year, reduce the amount of material sent to the land fill site and thereby promote environmental protection. Glass, paper, cardboard, plastic and metal containers should be placed in the blue bin. As a sign of respect for those who do the sorting at the recycling centre, please rinse out theses containers However, the following material should NOT be put into the bin: material that is soiled by food (e.g.: cardboard pizza boxes) wax paper or photos Objects that are composed of a number of different materials Clothing, shoes, glasses Mirrors, glass, light bulbs, dishes Hazardous products (see section on Household hazardous Waste) Styrofoam or plastic wrap (saran wrap) And especially no diapers or food waste in the blue bin! 2 3 What time? Bins should be placed near the street after 7 p.m. on the day before pick-up or prior to 7:00 a.m. on the day of pick-up. They must be removed after pick-up on the same day. Pick-up time can vary according to the sector. If you only live in Bromont part time, you might want to ask your neighbour to return your bin to its proper place. In winter Never leave the bin on the sidewalk or the street. It could interfere with snow clearing operations. Do not place your bin behind a snow bank it must be visible. RE-USE Instead of throwing away household objects that you no longer use but that still work, why not give them to the Comptoir familial in your area. The Comptoir de Depannage de Bromont is located at 46 Compton ( ) and accepts the household furnishings that you no longer want. Remember, one person s waste could be someone else s treasure. 3 SPECIAL BULKY WASTE PICK-UP The City of Bromont provides a special pick-up for bulky waste: 4 Household waste should be placed in the gray or black bin and will be picked up every second Monday during the fall/winter season (midseptember to mid-may) and every week during the rest of the year. Bulky metal waste such as stoves, fridges, washers, dryers, hot water tanks etc. Non-metal bulky waste such as tables, chairs, mattresses, beds, easy chairs, furniture etc. Construction waste will not be picked up as part of these special pick-ups. You must contact a contractor to collect this material or go directly to the Ecocentre in Cowansville (see below) As part of the City s on-going policy of sustainable development, household waste is collected less often to reduce cost but also to encourage recycling and re-use. Because of increased recycling, (pick up every week) a bi-weekly household waste pick-up should suffice. It is also possible to purchase a second black or gray bin or to take up composting to reduce the amount of waste that is produced in your home. 4 6 Dead leaves and Christmas trees can be put to good ecological use rather than simply being sent to the land fill site. However they need to be collected! COMPOSTING Domestic composting is a simple and economical solution that keeps table scraps away from landfills. Composters and composting guides are available at the office of the MRC of Brome-Missisquoi. A special pick up is provided each January for Christmas trees. Obviously, all decorations must be removed before the tree is put out for pick up. What can be composted at home? The MRC also offers citizens free training on household composting. Composting can reduce the volume of domestic waste by one third. Contact the MRC at to find out when and where the next training session will take place. The Canadian Council on Composting s web site ( offers numerous tips on household composting. 5 HOUSEHOLD HAZARDOUS WASTE Household hazardous waste (HHW) is made up of products that are used at home but that can be harmful to you or to the environment. These must NEVER be placed in the bins. In fact, this material must be sent to special sites such as the Ecocentre in Cowansville or to certain retailers in Bromont to ensure that it will not pose a risk to the health of the population or to the environment. 6 COWANSVILLE ECOCENTRE 2500 rang Saint-Joseph,Cowansville The Cowansville Ecocentre is a container park that is set up to recycle metal, wood waste and household furnishings. It is available to Bromont residents year round. Bromonters can dispose of bulky waste, construction or renovation waste, computers or household hazardous waste (HHW) in an environmentally friendly manner. By sorting the material (wood, metal, cement etc.) it is easier to recycle and ensure that it is not simply sent to the landfill site. Because the Ecocentre is near the Cowansville landfill site, you may also bring other material there such as household waste.
