4 Don t be a How to use your waste cart locks LOCK IT UP Secure bear attractants in a garage or shed, or with an approved cart lock. Secure carts, even if empty Ensure attractants are inaccessible to wildlife Lock outdoor fridges and freezers Pick ripe fruit, remove fallen fruit Clean BBQ after each use BEAR TARGET One meal from a waste cart or fruit tree is enough to bring a bear back again and again. Secure attractants to keep your neighbourhood safe and avoid a $50 fine. Keep bears away from these items! Garbage and food scraps Drink containers Diapers Greasy barbecues Grease barrels Pet food and bird seed Ripe fruit and berries Petroleum and chemical products Compost piles TIP: Freeze food scraps until collection day so their odour doesn t attract bears. More tips and info: portcoquitlam.ca/bears SET IT OUT Set out unlocked carts at curb 5:0-7:0 am on collection day, and secure again by 7 pm The City has distributed wildlife-resistant cart locks to homes that receive City waste services in bear-prone areas and don t have an approved lock. The locks are effective if used properly. Check the steps below. 4 Step-by-step video and other info: portcoquitlam.ca/lock Hook the curved ends of each strap under the lip of the cart on both sides of the cart, as close to the handles as possible. The final step is to slide the pin into the clasp to secure the lock. 2 5 Lay both pieces of the lock flat on top of the lid. To remove the lock, take out the pin, push in the safety latch, and lift the lever. Place the looped end of the clasp over the hooked end of the other strap, then push down the lever to close the lock. Proper positioning of cart lock Please note: the lock must fit snugly enough that it doesn t slide. If it is too loose, unclasp the lock and turn the loop to the right to tighten, or to the left to loosen. BEARS & WILDLIFE LOCK IT RIGHT! SEE A BEAR? Bear sightings are closely tracked. If you see a bear, call the Provincial Conservation Offi cer Service 24-hour toll-free hotline at rapp (7277) or go to rapp.bc.ca. Only aggressive bears are destroyed, as a last resort. Don t forget to remove locks before setting the cart out at the curb!

5 GREEN CART: FOOD SCRAPS FOOD-SOILED PAPER PLANT & YARD WASTE Accepted in Green Carts Visit portcoquitlam.ca/greencart for the complete list Food is banned from the landfill. Using your green cart is as easy as: COLLECT food scraps and food-soiled paper in a pail, newspaper, paper bag or other container. Reducing your food waste Avoid the YUCK! How to keep your pail and cart clean without using plastic 2 EMPTY food scraps and food-soiled paper into your green cart, along with plant/yard waste. Metro Vancouver homes generate about 90,000 tonnes of food waste each year, about half of which could have been eaten. Food waste adds about $700 to a home s annual grocery bill. Info: lovefoodhatewaste.ca. Wrap scraps in newspaper or used paper towel SET OUT green carts at the curb between 5:0-7:0 am on collection day. Why can t grease or food go down the drain? Fats, oils and grease can clog pipes and back up sewers. Wipe or scrape small amounts into your green cart, or bring larger amounts to the Coquitlam Transfer Station & Recycling Drop-off, 200 United Blvd. More info: metrovancouver.org/grease. Liquid cooking oil can also be brought to EcoZero, 68 Kingsway Ave., by appointment: Even if you use a garburator, bits of food you put down the drain must be screened out and sent to the landfill. Put all food in your green cart.
