2018 Recycling, Green Can and Garbage Guide CITY OF NORTH VANCOUVER cnv.org/recycling
Zero waste in a Living City Congratulations! Thanks to you, 71 per cent of materials are being diverted from the landfill. By using the Green Can, we ve reduced garbage by 40 per cent. Keep it up and let s keep recyclables and organics out of the garbage. Together we can help reach our region s goal of recycling 80 per cent of our waste by Reduce, Reuse, Repurpose, Repair, Refuse The best way to deal with garbage is by not creating it in the first place. Reduce waste by choosing items with minimal packaging. Reuse items like shopping bags, water bottles and coffee mugs. Repurpose goods by donating items you no longer need. Repair broken items instead of throwing them out. Refuse to buy products you won t use often - rent or borrow instead. CityCollect app Wondering what goes where and when? Download the CityCollect app and never miss a collection day. Get collection reminders and find out how to recycle many items. You can also use this app online at cnv.org/recycling cnv.org/livingcity 2

On collection day How to set out cans, boxes and bags Place materials at the curb the morning of collection, before 7:30am, to ensure collection and to avoid attracting animals. Secure lids. Do not use bungee cords, rope, or straps. Place glass jars and bottles in the Grey Box, and other containers in the Blue Box. Place the Yellow Bag for paper beside, not inside, the Blue Box. Set cans, boxes and bags side-by-side in a straight line for quick, easy collection. 77L Garbage can (every other week) Green Can (77L) Yard trimmings Mixed paper Containers Glass Missing a Blue or Grey Box? Pick one up at City Hall or call Smithrite at to have one delivered. Need a Yellow Bag or Green Can decal? Pick one up at City Hall or call City Operations at to have one mailed to you. Never miss a pick up day Use the CityCollect app (also available online at cnv.org/collection) to get collection reminders and recycling info. 4
Coexisting with wildlife Many wildlife encounters can be prevented by managing garbage, food scraps and other attractants. Feeding bears, even unintentionally, is against the law. Manage your garbage and food scraps: Store it: Keep your garbage, Green Can and recycling indoors or inside a secure enclosure until the morning of collection. Clean it: Wash your Green Can with a mild soap or vinegar and water solution to reduce odours. Wrap it: Wrap food scraps in newspaper or paper bags to minimize odours. Freeze it: Store smelly food scraps in the freezer until collection day. To report a bear sighting call BEAR (2327). Learn more at cnv.org/bearaware Don t attract wildlife Remove outdoor fridges & freezers Clean BBQs after use Keep pet food indoors Remove feeders April - November Pick fruit as soon as it ripens Compost responsibly 5

Green Can Food scraps are not garbage they belong in your Green Can. Food scraps are now banned from Metro Vancouver landfills, which means using your Green Can or backyard composter for organic waste. What to do with used cooking oil: Small amounts of cooking oil can be wiped up with a paper towel and put in the Green Can. Larger amounts can be dropped off at the North Shore Transfer Station recycling area. Never dump grease and oil down the drain as this causes sewer line blockages. Wrap your food scraps in newspaper or paper bags for a cleaner can. Using your Green Can Place food scraps and food-soiled paper with your yard trimmings in a 77L can with a lid and a Green Can decal. Yard trimmings are accepted in kraft paper bags with folded tops (but no food scraps, please). Maximum weight per can, bag or bundle is 20kg. 1 m (3 ft) 30 cm (1 ft) Bundle twigs and branches with biodegradable string or twine (no wire, nylon rope or plastic strapping).
