3 ARS Services CMX Series Silver Recovery The Low - Cost Silver Recovery Solution - The ARS Services CMX series silver recovery units offer labs an alternative to costly recovery units. These simplified units require smaller initial investment, with less hands on maintenance, and will comply with CMP environmental standards. Manufactured with UL Listed components, the CMX series systems feature two molded HDPE Turbit Miner Disposable Canisters, the highest quality available. Simple Store and Meter Principle - The CMX-P and CMX-C Silver Recovery Units are built on the simple principle of storing the silver bearing solutions generated during the day and metering it through the canisters over a twenty-four hour period. Proper tank size and pumps allow the solutions to be slowly and consistently desilvered, to maximize silver recovery. Float switches and relays automatically control pump operation. The system is equipped with a highpressure sensor and alarm, which indicate potential problems. The Key to Efficient Silver Recovery - Holding tank size and metering pump speed are critical to efficient silver recovery. The CMX-P and CMX-C feature a proportionally larger molded holding tank manufactured from high-density polyethylene, and high quality metering pumps with adjustable feed rates. The Best Canisters - ARS Services uses only Turbit Miner Disposable Canisters, the best canisters available. These HDPE molded canisters are metallic displacement devices, incorporating a patent # 6,096,209 three stage core resistant to the corrosive effects of photo solutions. Turbit Miner Disposable Canisters are designed for one time use and, with scheduled replacement, will reduce iron discharge and improve silver recovery. 5 Operation of the CMX Silver Recovery System The CMX series machine is designed to recover silver 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Suggested pump rate between 20 to 50mls per minute. Pump rates can be increased for higher volumes. Points: The slower the effluent flows through the canisters the longer you will be able to maintain an efficient life span, and low PPM silver discharge from the canisters. Low maintenance, cost effective silver recovery program. Reliable environmental treatment of Photographic Imaging solutions. The Process for Recovering Silver: A. The effluent is either plumbed through the spin weld fitting on the back of the holding tank or poured directly into the machine through the funnel pour opening. B. The effluent is then slowly metered through the pump and into the bottom inlet on the Primary canister. C. Then the effluent is metered through the primary canister and out the top outlet. D. The effluent is then metered into the bottom inlet on the Secondary canister. E. Then effluent is metered through the secondary canister and out the top outlet for disposal. F. The treated effluent can be either: 1. Pumped through the waste jug assembly into the waste jug where it would be manually poured down the drain. Note: Empty the 5gallon waste jug nightly and before silver bearing solutions are poured into the machine for easier handling. 2. The treated effluent is pumped through a hose down hill to a floor drain or a drainpipe. Note: Do not run the drain line uphill. ARS Services, LLC 5

CANISTERS MUST BE FILLED WITH WATER BEFORE USE To fill with water: Lay canister on it s side Make sure both valves are open Fill with water through the Female QD (Long) Don t use high water pressure, let the water slowly trickle into the canister After filling with water close valve on both QD s. On the Monitoring Record Label and Date each canister. One canister will be the primary, the other will be the secondary. Connect the Female QD from the pump to the Male QD from the lower inlet on the primary canister. Connect the Female QD from the top inlet on the primary canister to the Male QD from the lower inlet on the secondary canister. Connect the Female QD from the top inlet on the secondary canister to the CMX Waste Jug Adapter. Proper orientation of canisters and waste jug in containment tray (Holding Tank not shown). The smaller right angle inlet on the Black Waste Jug Adapter is to Direct Plumb Non - Silver Bearing Solutions such as Developers or C-41 Bleach. (optional) Pump rates are pre-set at the factory, but adjustments can be made for higher volumes. Excessive pump rates may have the potential to lower silver yields and can raise silver discharge levels. There are two direct plumb inlets located on the back of the holding tank for silver bearing solutions. ARS Services, LLC 6

It is very important that the primary canister is changed out on time. If the primary canister is left on past its life span it will: Pass the silver that it collected in the primary canister right out to the secondary canister then to the drain, in time causing the silver discharge to the drain to be higher then the legal limits. May cause a loss in silver revenue. Tubit Miner Canister Label Filling out the Monitoring Record Note: It is very important to remember to use the monitoring record to record the install dates in both the primary and secondary positions as well as the removal date. There are several ways to determine when canisters need to be changed out: 1. Track the amount of: Gallons of chemicals processed Number of rolls processed Amount of sheets of film or feet of film Amount of sheets of paper or feet of paper 2. Testing the levels of silver in the solution by: Silver test papers Copper test strips AA testing of chemical samples 3. Length of time: Canisters generally last between 6 months to 1 year. Never leave a primary canister on longer then 9 months, the steel wool will begin to break down Once the cycle time has been determined, future canisters change out times can be scheduled accordingly. Many labs elect to change and rotate canisters on a fixed calendar year as an easy method to maintain compliance. ARS Services, LLC 7

Replacing Turbit Miner Canisters The primary canister located next to the pump, is removed and emptied into the holding tank. Then the secondary canister is rotated into the primary position.

Plug both the top and lower inlets on the removed canister after saving the hose and fitting assemblies.

Attach Female QD to the top, center inlet on the canister. Replace the teflon tape.

8 Replacing Turbit Miner Canisters The primary canister located next to the pump, is removed and emptied into the holding tank. Then the secondary canister is rotated into the primary position. The new canister is then placed in to the secondary position. Mark canisters before rotation to avoid confusion. Removing the incorrect canister will affect silver yields and compliance. Plug both the top and lower inlets on the removed canister after saving the hose and fitting assemblies. NOTE: Completely flush and clean out the removed assemblies, as well as the assembly on the top of the new primary canister, prior to installing the new canister. This will minimize future clogging. Attach Female QD to the top, center inlet on the canister. Replace the teflon tape. Attach Male QD to the lower inlet on the canister. Replace the teflon tape. Connect the Female QD from the top inlet on the secondary canister to the CMX Waste Jug Adapter or the sewer. Included in the Box with the new canister is a bag, 2 plugs, wire ties, a silver refining form, and a return shipping label. Shipping instructions are on page 16 of this manual. ARS Services, LLC 8

9 3 Cleaning LMI Metering Pump strainer The LMI metering pump has been primed and ready for use from the factory 1. Turn the system on with water in the holding tank 2 to 3 gallons. 2. Let the machine run for 5 to 10 minutes if the solution has not began flow from the pump then the pump needs to be primed. NOTE: MOST PUMP OUTPUT PROBLEMS ARE DUE TO THE STRAINER IN THE BOTTOM OF THE HOLDING TANK BEING CLOGGED! Un plug the power cord before raising the strainer out of solution. The strainer is attached to a support rod next to the red no developer label, slide the rod out from under the white clip and lift it out of the tank to access the strainer. Don t lift the strainer higher than the top of the tank or you may damage the hose. STRAINER To clean the strainer, unscrew only the white part from the black part of the foot valve. Rinse the strainer with hot water until clean. Replace the strainer and rod before plugging in the pump, hand tighten all fittings prior to setup, do not operate the pump without the strainer. Be sure the rod is under the white clip. IF CLEANING THE STRAINER DIDN T FIX THE PROBLEM, YOU MUST REPRIME THE PUMP, NEXT PAGE. NOTE: Dumping non-silver bearing wastes (developers or bleaches) in the holding tank will cause premature canister failure! ARS Services, LLC 9

Force Priming the CMX pump. This procedure makes restoring a lost prime in the CMX metering pump quick and simple, regardless of the system configuration. Step 1.

Be sure you do this procedure over a tray to avoid loosing small parts! Strainer 2. Un-screw ONLY the lock collar from the valve housing. 3.

Flare out the end of the poly tubing with the tip of a ball point pen, as shown above. 5.

10 Force Priming the CMX pump. This procedure makes restoring a lost prime in the CMX metering pump quick and simple, regardless of the system configuration. Step 1. Disconnect the orange power cord from the wall outlet. A. Lift the foot valve assembly from inside the holding tank. B. Be sure you do this procedure over a tray to avoid loosing small parts! Strainer 2. Un-screw ONLY the lock collar from the valve housing. 3. If the strainer is clogged, now is a good time to remove it from the ribbed black collar and clean it. DO NOT remove the valve housing from the ribbed black collar. 4. Flare out the end of the poly tubing with the tip of a ball point pen, as shown above. 5. Fill your 30cc syringe with water and insert the tip of the syringe in the flared end of the poly tubing. Push the plunger all the way in to fill the hose and pump with water. 6. Reverse steps 3, 2, 1, to restore the system to service. 7. If the syringe wont empty into the hose, call ARS Services, LLC Technical support ARS Services, LLC 10

Priming the Pump: Option B 1.. Unplug the unit from the wall and close the ball valve on the hose attached to the bottom of the primary canister.

.Force the collapsed syringe into the female coupling attached to the ¼ hose coming out of the pump.

Pull the plunger out to the 30ml mark, sucking the effluent into the pump, remove the syringe and empty it into the effluent tank, repeat until

11 Priming the Pump: Option B 1.. Unplug the unit from the wall and close the ball valve on the hose attached to the bottom of the primary canister. 2. Disconnect the pump from the primary canister. 3. Remove the syringe from the pump body (under the cover) 4..Force the collapsed syringe into the female coupling attached to the ¼ hose coming out of the pump. The outer barrel of the syringe is a tight fit inside the rubber gasket in the neck of the coupling. 5. Pull the plunger out to the 30ml mark, sucking the effluent into the pump, remove the syringe and empty it into the effluent tank, repeat until the syringe fills with liquid. 6. Place the Quick Disconnect fitting in the effluent holding tank and plug the pump in to check it,if it pumps unplug the unit, re-connect the canisters, open the valve, and return the unit to service. 12 Pump Operation and Fine Tuning: 1. The LMI metering pump is designed to pump chemistry continuously for 24 hours a day. 2. The pump has adjustment label low, medium, and high setting 3. In order to determine the pump setting, a gradated cylinder must be used to measure the amount of solution pumped per minute. 4. Set the pump at 30% or Low and measure the output for two or three minutes, then average. This will give you a starting point. 5. Multiply total number of gallons of silver bearing chemistry generated on the busiest day of the week by the number of days of operation Example: 6 gallons per day X 5 days a week = 30 gallons per week Gallons per Week Recommended mls per Minute 20 gallons mls - Low 30 gallons mls - Medium 50 gallons mls - High Note: Excessive pump rates, lowers yield and can raise silver discharge levels.
