56 Sonic Sinks Sonic processing sinks provide a microscopic cleaning method to clean debris from medical instruments. Sonic sinks comes with sink skirting and are available for single, dual or triple basin sinks. An optional back frame for mounting prerinse faucets, spray and air guns is also available. The sonic operation of this type of sink is a plugin and play, that is--simply place the medical instruments on the perforated tray in the basin, fill the basin with fluid, replace the lid, set the desired process time and switch on. Installation and Maintenance The sonic sink should be placed so that its right side (where its power unit is located) is near a 120 VAC GFI power outlet. The DI water faucet must be installed directly over the sonic basin. Upon installation of the sink, ensure that there is adequate ventilation at the site as the temperature can rise, developing a large amount of steam as a result of heating or the energy from ultrasonic effect. Sonic sinks are maintained and cleaned in the same manner as any other stainless steel processing sink mentioned in this manual. How a Sonic Sink Cleans Ultrasonic energy introduces high and low pressure phases into a cleaning solution, which creates small vacuum bubbles throughout the solution. Once these bubble reach a critical size, they violently implode creating an intense scrubbing action (a process known as ultrasonic cavitation). These bubbles are microscopic in size and scrub the complex surfaces of a part to be cleaned. To create ultrasonics energy, piezoelectric transducers are bonded to the sink tank. An ultrasonic generator converts line voltage to a high frequency pulse that is applied to the transducers. The crystals in the transducers expand and contract with these electrical pulses creating acoustical energy in the solution. This acoustical energy creates the pressure changes leading to ultrasonic cavitation. The type of cleaning solution used (which increases the number of bubbles) and the time/ temperature setting greatly contributes to the effectiveness of the sonic cleaning operation. MAN

57 How to Ultrasonically Clean Medical Instruments IMPORTANT: Ultrasonic cleansing is NOT a sterilization process, but a preliminary cleaning process. Immediately after medical use, rinse the medical instruments in cool running tap water to remove blood and other contaminants. DO NOT use hot water as this will cause protein substances to coagulate and harden. Separate medical instruments by metal type and process them in batches (for example-- do NOT mix chrome, plated and stainless steel in the same cleaning cycle). Place instruments on the perforated tray in the sonic basin. Hinged instruments (like scissors) should be in an open position. Make sure sharp instruments do not touch other instruments. Stacking of instruments should be avoided. Fill the Sonic Basin with a solution of DI water and enzymatic detergent according to manufacturer s recommendations. Make sure that the instruments are fully submerged. Start the sonic sink and allow the sonic cleaning operation to process the instruments the required length of time. Then drain the basin and remove the instruments. Rinse the instruments thoroughly in DI water to remove the ultrasonic cleaning solutions and any remaining soil. All remnants of the cleaning solution must be rinsed off. Otherwise, discoloration of instruments will occur during autoclaving or heat sterilization. Dry instruments thoroughly with a clean towel to minimize corrosion and water spots. Inspect each instrument. Lubricate each instrument after rinsing and before the sterilization cycle. (Lubricant provided by other suppliers). The instruments are now ready for sterilization. Cleaning Solution Agents Used to Clean Instruments Ultrasonically Citric-based (a mildly acidic, general purpose cleaner for passivating steel and titanium to create a rust-free surface) Enzymatic-detergents (Removes protein-based contaminants, such as blood, excrement, human tissue, mold, mildew and bacteria) De-ionized water (Removes surface contaminants, light finger oils, and mineral deposits). Note: The cleaning solution agents to be provided by other suppliers. Use according to manufacturer s recommendations) MAN

58 Safe Operation of the Sonic Sink The Auto On/Off Control and Sonic Generator Access panel are located on the front at the right hand side of the sink. (See red circled area). Sonic sink shown here with optional feature Sonic Sink Faucet Rack S Plug in the sonic power cord to the power outlet. Start the sonic cleaning process by rotating the Auto On/Off switch clockwise to the desired time setting. The maximum auto time setting is 30 minutes. The Hold setting allows the sonic process to continue until it is switched off manually. Place the sonic basin cover on the sonic basin while sonically cleaning to prevent evaporation of the bath fluid and reduce odor. Auto On/Off Switch DO NOT switch on the sonic sink basin while it is empty of cleaning fluid. The cleaning tank must be filled with fluid to at least 7/8 full (or 1 to 1 1/4 inches from the basin top). Use ONLY the cleaning fluids approved for use with ultrasonic applications. DO NOT use flammable or explosive fluids. NEVER put your hands in the tank when the ultrasonic sink is ON. Always switch OFF the ultrasonic sink and drain out the fluids before inserting and removing the instruments to be cleaned. The ultrasonic energy and hot fluid may cause burns. Do not leave the ultrasonic cleaner unattended during operation. MAN

59 Accessing the Sonic Generator This generator is a 1000 Watt, 40 Khz appliance. The sonic settings are pre-set by the factory. Ordinarily, there is no need to adjust the settings except if: During a power shut-down the battery backup fails. The settings must then be reset Or to adjust the intensity (frequency) of the sonic operation. Access the controls by removing the four screws and removing the Sonic Generator Access cover panel. Generator panel features an illuminated LCD display, I/O Select button (enable/disable, selection button depending on menu function), a green light HF indicator (HF output active), a red light Error indicator (sonic system error), Up/Down button (settings and adjustment of menu parameters). 61 Adjustable Height Sonic Sinks Only - Use Caution When Lowering the Sink Height On adjustable sonic sinks, sink misalignment can occur if trash cans or other obstructions are placed under the sink during use. When the sink is lowered, the obstruction causes the sink to lower improperly. When this is happens, the tail piece cuts into the inside of the plumbing, causing the plumbing to prevent the sink from moving freely and causing plumbing leaks. (Sink is shown with the optional Sonic Sink Faucet Rack S ) Caution: Remove obstructions under sink to prevent damage when using the hydraulic system to adjust sink height. MAN
