1 March, Sugar Maple Lane Lexington Kentucky PRESIDENT S MESSAGE Greg Holt Spring is around the corner. Soon, we will see the hints of encouragement that blooms and green are coming. That brings a lot activity from the staff to ready the community for the beauty that spring and summer brings. The Board welcomes new members, Jack Herlihy and Don Lynam. Jack has a lengthy background in education administration and consulting. Don is a past Board President and has served on several committees. We now have a complete board and look to continue moving Griffin Gate forward. We again encourage residents to join a committee and participate in the improvement of the community. The homeowner insurance process continues to move along, but there still is information to collect. At the February meeting, the Board passed a series of cumulative fines to commence if information is not delivered to the office by April 1. Letters will be sent to those who have incomplete files. Phone calls have been made to owners and agents and s sent in an attempt to expedite this process. It is hoped that these fines will not be necessary but, our documents require that this information be on file with the Association. It is time to plan for house repairs before spring season painting begins. 2 GARDEN CLUB NEWS Brenda Lampton The purpose of the Garden Club is to stimulate an interest in gardening AND in the beautification of our community. CALLING ALL RESIDENT ARTISTS GARDEN CLUB NEWS The Griffin Gate Garden Club is planning a Salad Luncheon for members and all residents on Wednesday, April 27, beginning at noon. At the luncheon we want to showcase the talents of our Resident Artists. If you are a painter, pottery maker, woodcrafter, glass blower, seamstress or dabble in any other artistic medium, please consider bringing over a piece or pieces of your work for our group to enjoy viewing during our luncheon. WILSON NURSERY AND SAGE RESTAURANT ON MARCH 16 Please mark your calendar and plan to attend our next Garden Club event on Wednesday, March 16. We will meet at the Clubhouse by 10:15am and carpool to Wilson Nursery in Frankfort. Lunch will be at 11:00 am at Sage restaurant. After lunch, we will meet in the Nursery Area for a program on Outdoor Container Gardening Tips led by Greenhouse Manager Jacob Stidham. We will take your artwork and display it in a way that compliments the piece so that it is very pleasing to view. In addition, you will have the opportunity to discuss your work as the lunch group travels Art pieces will be strictly for display and discussion - nothing will be marked for sale. March is associated with changeable, often blustery weather, leading to the folk wisdom repeated by every school child: March comes in like a lion and goes out like a lamb. In the ancient Romans original calendar, March was the first month, the beginning of spring being a logical starting point for a new year. In Rome s Mediterranean climate, the weather was suitable for beginning military campaigns, which explains why the month was named for Mars, the god of war. After the adoption of the Julian calendar in 46 BC, the months of January and February were inserted in front of March. But many cultures throughout the world historically observed a day or days in March as the beginning of their new year. By meteorological definition, the calendar s spring months are March, April and May, making March 1 the first day of spring. Astronomically, the beginning of spring is determined by the vernal equinox. Vernal comes from the Latin vernalis, meaning of the spring. The word equinox refers to the time when night and day are of approximately the same length, and derives from the Latin equinoxium, which literally means equal night. The spring or vernal equinox falls on March 20 or 21, when the sun shines directly on the equator, making the length of day and night nearly equal throughout all parts of the world. Daffodil is the commonly-used name for the genus Narcissus, which consists of hardy, reliable and long-lived spring-flowering bulbs. Originally native to Mediterranean lands, daffodils are now grown throughout the world. Most often yellow or gold, they can also be found in shades of orange, white, pink, lime green and numerous combinations of these colors. The American Daffodil Society divides narcissus into 13 horticultural divisions: trumpet, large-cupped, small-cupped, double, triandrus, cyclamineus, jonquilla, tazetta, poeticus, bulbocodium, split-corona, species, miniature and miscellaneous. Often sweetly fragrant and always a welcome sight in spring, the daffodil serves as a symbol of hope and of rebirth.
