It appears the extreme drought classification we were in has been lifted and our plants have responded favorably to the additional water and we can look forward to healthy looking plants this Spring. Our annual Plant Sale is scheduled for April 22. Don t forget to save your excess plants and continue saving cuttings for this sale. Please take note of the Dates to Remember section on this page and mark your calendar with dates set for upcoming events. Dates are now set for a tour of Central Park Japanese Garden on February 7, and our annual Plant Sale on April 22. We will announce more events and dates as they become available. This month has two holidays that I would like to mention, Valentine s Day on February 14 and Presidents Birthdays celebrated on February 21. Our speaker for our February Meeting is Sheena Sidhu and her subject is Native Pollinators in our Gardens. This should be a very interesting presentation. See the birds and the bees pictures on pages 3 and 4 taken by Renate. Do you have an article or a notice you would like to have published in a future issue of our Newsletter? We received many thank you comments for the plated lunch. We feel that it all went off without a problem. It is a delight to prepare and serve for our wonderful members. Our committee prepared delicious food. Thank you to, Edythe Miller, Patricia Snowden, Tom Davids and Carol Kirschner. Carleigh Fager was excused as she was in the hospital having a baby boy. 5 In the Garden this month Excerpted from Sunset Magazine Following our unexpected but much-needed rain be prepared. Mosquitoes breed in anything that holds standing water: pots, buckets, dishes, and birdbaths, etc. Hose out birdbaths regularly and empty vessels filled with dirty water. Cut back ornamental grasses before new growth starts. Gather the blades by looping twine around the clump, about 12 inches above ground. Pull the twine tight around the blades, and then cut the grass about 4 to 6 inches above ground. Compost the clippings. Start seeds of beets, carrots, collards, fava beans, kale, leeks, lettuce, parsley, peas, rutabaga, spinach, and turnip. Cut back woody shrubs. Zones 7-9, 14-17: To stimulate lush new growth on artemisia, butterfly bush, fuchsia, and Mexican bush sage, cut back woody stems to within a few inches of the ground. If left unpruned, plants become leggy and scraggly-looking. If your cymbidium orchids are bulging out of their containers or the bark has decomposed, it's time to repot them. Do this between mid-february and early July to assure bloom next season. Remove old bark, cut off dead roots, and discard soft or rotted bulbs. Repot the plant into a larger container, or divide plants into groups of three to five pseudobulbs (bulbs with leaves). Replant in medium-size bark or purchase a cymbidium mix. Give your sweetheart a valentine that will live on long after February 14. Tie a red ribbon around a lemon tree or put a bow on a bare-root rose. Or choose a flowering plant that can go outdoors after bloom is through. Choices include azalea, camellias, carnations, gardenias, and Oriental lilies. Curious about where your produce comes from? I received a letter from the Consumer Relations Coordinator of Grimmway Farms in Bakersfield, California recently. This was in response to my call on their number on a package of spinach I purchased at a local market. They were thankful for my call and eager to be of help in telling about their farms and growing techniques of various vegetables. Miss Curti sent me four large cookbooks containing about 80 recipes. I ll bring them to the February meeting Claire Sebald The best way to garden is to put on a wide-brimmed straw hat and some old clothes, and with a hoe in one hand and a cold drink in the other, tell someone else where to dig.
