1 SWA PROJECT TEAM Callaway Bihan Longhenry Mei PROJECT NAME Nanjing Conference and Exhibition Center LOCATION Nanjing, China CLIENT TVS International, INC. CLIENT CONTACT/REFERENCE Kevin Gordon OTHER CONSULTANT TEAM MEMBERS CMS collaborative SCOPE OF WORK Design Development PROJECT SIZE 124 acres DATE BEGUN 8/14/2006 Pelaz SWA OFFICE Sausalito / San Francisco Yin PROJECT DESCRIPTION Site Plan and Context: The site is 50 HA surrounded by a regional park, new high rise office corridor and a new cultural/civic district. The site plan is very strong and simple. Four large exhibit halls face the important Jiang Dong Road in a gentle curve. The Exhibit Halls represent the Tiger and the Conference Center represents the head of the Dragon. The arrival corridor along the face of the Halls and the east parking areas form the body of the Dragon. Jiang Dong Road is the front of the project. The northeast corner is diagonally across from an important civic complex. The Westside of the Halls is the service area with residential blocks across the street. This is the back side. To the south is a large park. Future hotels anchor the northeast and the south east corners. The landscape responds to and reinforces (or mitigates) each of these main conditions and ideas. The Tiger and the Dragon: The body of the Dragon is created by masses of planes trees that visually screen the east parking area and provide shade. The tail of the Dragon curls around a water fountain at the south end and sweeps in front of the Halls providing a continuous outlook to nature along the concourse. An outdoor walkway through the triple row of trees gives an open air alternative parallel to the concourse. An understory of flowering shrubs compliments an almost continuous waterway at the face of the concourse. Bridges provide access to the concourse across these water features. The VIP access and drop off parallels this linear park making for a gracious arrival. Reflecting Pools: Nestled between the body and tail of the Dragon are a series of grandly scaled reflecting pools that when turned off (individually or all at once) become outdoor exhibit venues of varying size. The view to the Halls from the main arrival drive (to the east of the pools) is spectacular with the glass concourse aglow through the filter of the plane trees. The pools, along with a shade and rain canopy, make the walk from the taxi/bus drop offs and east parking area a pleasant experience. Lawn areas and sitting gardens between the canopied walkways and the pools cool the environment and can used as smaller exhibit areas. The pools will be seen through the scrim of planes from the glass concourse. Conference Center and Temporary Plaza: A bosque of Scarlet Maples reach across Bai Long Jiang XI Street as it goes through the site helping to scale and connect the two sides. In the fall the brilliant red foliage will represent the tongue of the Dragon. The shade of the grid of trees will be augmented by an array of fountains creating a human scaled environment in contrast the otherwise grand scaled complex. Sunny flower gardens will provide pleasant alternatives for people to escape the excitement of the exhibits. These parterre gardens will be separated from the surrounding streets by clipped hedges and shades by informal large trees.
2 SWA PROJECT TEAM The temporary plaza and outdoor exhibit space is scaled and framed by a triple row of Camphor trees along Jiang Dong Road and the extended tail of the Dragon on the east backed up by the temporary Pine forest. A wedge of Camphor trees anchors the north edge standing in for the future hotel. The space itself is patterned by the continuation of the entry plazas to the Halls along the VIP Drive. These plazas are interlaced with lawn and panels of gravel. People coming from the northeast and the subway have a choice of continuing along Jiang Dong Road under the shade of the triple row of Camphor trees and then through the Scarlet Maple bosque and parterre gardens or use the tail of the Dragon walk along the west side to get to the Conference Center and Exhibit Halls. The Embracing Urban Forest: The west side of the Halls is hardworking service areas. There are residential blocks across Yan Shang Road. A great Pine forest planted on high earth berms as an extension of the large urban park to the south will at once visually mitigate the backside of the Halls and create a great urban forest that embraces the entire complex.
