1 March 2015 GROW Tulsa Garden Center News Gardening by the Book Vegetable Gardening 2435 S. Peoria Ave Tulsa, OK Contributions: January 8, 2015 February 7, 2015 Tulsa Garden Center Brookside Cleaners, L.L.C. Panera Bread Linnaeus Teaching Garden J. Grant Easterling Tulsa Garden Center presents a Household Shredding Event! Like Tulsa Garden Center on Facebook If you are interested in growing your own vegetables, you have joined the blossoming ranks of DIY gardeners who place a premium on the idea of selfreliance and healthy eating. These titles make vegetable growing fun and pain free as they guide the reader. It is possible to have vegetable gardens that are designed and maintained for recreation and flavor. Backyard Harvest: A Year- Round Guide to Growing Fruits and Vegetables (DK Publishing, 2011) is a beautifully illustrated guide. Good for the new gardener, it is organized by month giving a list of what to eat, what to sow, what to harvest and what maintenance tasks need to be tackled. The at-a-glance section includes a vegetable chart planner. Gardening by Cuisine: An Organic-food Lover s Guide to Sustainable Living (Freading/ebook, 2013) is geared for low maintenance. Each of the author s raised bed and container garden plans contain key ingredients of popular cuisines - Italian, Asian, Latin-Caribbean, and others. Also included are simple delicious recipes and menus that make the most of the produce. Groundbreaking Food Gardens: 73 Plans That Will Change the Way You Grow Your Garden (Storey Pub., 2014) has two to four page plans for each of the variety of themes. These have line drawings, narratives, and charts. The contributors and their inspirations are given for each plan. Unique food gardens include growing 24 kinds of chile peppers, a cocktail garden and even a Chicago hot dog garden. Growing Vegetables and Herbs: Expert Advice Made Easy. (Hatherleigh, 2013) is a comprehensive primer for first time gardeners. The detailed illustrations and informative photographs help eliminate confusion. This guide takes the reader from planning out the garden to its planting then nurturing and eventually enjoying its harvest. Successful gardening is aided by knowing which plants grow well in your area. Southern Fruit and Vegetable Gardening: Plant, Grow, and Harvest the Best Edibles (Cool Springs Press, 2013) is written exclusively for gardeners in Oklahoma and other similar states. Planting, care and harvesting details are given for more than 60 foods. Helpful color photographs show a variety of common and unusual fruits, vegetables, nuts and herbs. For sowing, growing and harvesting quick foods try The Speedy Vegetable Garden (Freading/ebook, 2013). Cultivation advice, recommended varieties and clear how-to photographs are for more than 50 crops. The suggestions would be helpful for anyone trying to get children interested in gardening. These quick maturing varieties will put food on your plate in record time. Mary Moore Tulsa City-County Library
