1 February 2016 GROW Tulsa Garden Center News Gardening by the Book Houseplants 2435 S. Peoria Ave Tulsa, OK Gardening InfoFair February 20, :00 3:00pm Like Tulsa Garden Center on Facebook Millions of people love to garden, and many are finding creative and inspiring ways to bring those gardens indoors. Warmweather gardeners welcome the change to extend their hobby indoors over the entire year when plants decorate homes, purify the air and generally boost the spirits. Beginning and experienced gardeners are looking for new species of plants to try for both indoor and outdoor gardening. With more than 500 color photographs, Better Homes and Gardens Indoor Gardening (Wiley, 2012) covers all the basics of the topic. Simple directions and diagrams are given for more than 40 projects including basket gardens, living walls, topiaries, and water gardens. An encyclopedia of nearly 200 houseplants has descriptions and growing tips. This comprehensive guide will help create beautifully completed projects. Growing Healthy Houseplants: Choose the Right Plant, Water Wisely and Control Pests (Storey Publishing, 2014) can offer friendly guidance making you a confident grower in no time. This concise guide with its black and white drawings emphasizes the basics. Whether learning of the essentials needed for plant growth or daily care, this book helps the reader keep their plants alive and healthy. The Indestructible Houseplant: 200 Beautiful Plants That Everyone Can Grow (Timber Press, 2015) highlights some of those that are the easiest to grow. The key is in the selection. With color photographs, boxed summaries and details of combination plants, author Tovah Martin details how anyone can grow houseplants. Some ideas for fun containers further demonstrate that houseplants can perk up a room. The variety of plant bouquets, centerpieces, tabletop containers and terrariums are highlighted in The Plant Recipe Book (Artisan, 2014). Each of the 100 recipes has a plant and material ingredient list with easy to follow step-by-step assembly instructions. Its organization is based alphabetically by the plant, chosen for availability and ease of care. Rooted in Design (Ten Speed Press, 2015) offers advice for choosing plant varieties and pairing them with unique design ideas. From small containers to tabletop designs, the emphasis is on modern interior design including wall bricks and planters. The clear photography and instructions aid this stylish and innovative book. The Unexpected Houseplant (Timber Press, 2012) is divided by the seasons. Over 220 plants, from exotic to conventional are highlighted. The unusual plantcontainer pairings give all an artsy flavor. A lengthy discussion of each plant, with its foliage, size, water requirements and rate of growth, are for both the beginner and the practiced green thumb gardeners.
