1 November 2014 GROW News Gardening by the Book 2435 S. Peoria Ave Tulsa, OK Contributions: September 8, 2014 October 7, 2014 Rob Crowder Dr. Geoffrey L. Price The Oklahoma Society of Impressionists Dorothy Laird Phyllis S. Worley Tulsa Garden Club Barbara Kontje Marydith and Paul Williams Linnaeus Teaching Garden Rosalind Cook Gi Gi Lavender Chere Ricker Cindy McClure In Memory of Beth Colmar William A. Coberly In Memory of Ella Mae Whitley John and Debbie Herrin Heather, Chris and Pyper Treece Women s Group of St. Andrew Lutheran Like Tulsa Garden Center on Facebook Looking forward to the annual Tulsa Herb Society s Carols and Crumpets prepares one for thinking of using herbs during the upcoming holiday and winter seasons. They may have grown all year and now are in abundance. What to do now? These titles can give suggestions. There is a wealth of great ideas for using herbs every day in a variety of ways. Complete Illustrated Book of Herbs (Reader s Digest Association, 2009) has essentials for beginners. One can find instructions for flavorful recipes, health-care products, craft ideas, insect repellents, cosmetics, cleaning agents, and much more. This directory of more than 100 herbs puts all the information needed at one s fingertips. It has combined traditional knowledge along with advice from gardening experts, herbalists, craft experts and cooks. British food editor and writer Debora Robertson s Gifts from the Garden (Kyle Books, 2013) has more than 100 projects for both edible and practical use. With inventive ideas, gardening advice and packaging tips, this combines skills of the crafter and the gardener. A list of projects by category neatly summarizes all of these gifts from the garden. Colorful full page photographs are combined with the recipes and instructions. For practical advice on the medicinal, cleaning, and consumptive uses of herbs try Home Herbal: Cook, Brew and Blend Your Own Herbs (DK Publishing, 2011). This user friendly guide highlights the properties of 100 herbs. The Herbs second half of the book includes recipes for soups, teas, and other edibles as well as personal care products. Photographic demonstrations and recipes are large and instructional which are typical of DK books. This was compiled by several herbalists and naturopaths. Author Tammi Hartung s Homegrown Herbs (Storey Publishing, 2011) is an in-depth guide for using more than 100 herbs. There are photographs of the author demonstrating the planting, caring for, and harvesting of the plants. Learn how to prepare herbal baths, mix seasoning blends, perk up recipes and make homemade body creams, herbal vinegars and butters, wreaths, and potpourris. This is a step-by-step primer for gardeners of every level. What Can I Do With My Herbs? (Texas A&M University Press, 2009) has 40 common herbs with creative ways to enjoy them. Each description includes the plant s history and a list of popular uses. Author Judy Barrett has recommendations for each specific herb outside the kitchen. However, she does suggest that they not be used medicinally. This may not be for the beginning grower since it has minimal planting directions. Mary Moore Tulsa City-County Library
