3 Runway Safety Experts Speak Out. Congress and the Industry Listen. Improving Runway Safety: Reducing Risk was the topic of a June 25 Air Transport World webinar that drew participants from 21 countries, 25 airlines, and senior staffers representing several key United States Senators, the Federal Aviation Administration and the U.S. Government Accountability Offi ce. The webinar featured Dr. Earl Weener, Foundation Fellow for the Flight Safety Foundation, George Trampus, Lead Engineer at Boeing, and Honeywell s own C. Don Bateman, Corporate Fellow and Chief Engineer-Technologist. The webinar was cosponsored by Honeywell Aerospace in an effort to help raise awareness of runway incursions as a signifi cant safety issue which impacts commercial aerospace around the globe. The magnitude of the runway safety issue was defi ned by the Flight Safety Foundation s Weener, who called runway incursions, part of a new breed of safety challenges facing the industry. Weener pointed out that while there are not many accidents, there are numerous reported incidents a combination that heightens risk. In fact, the National Transportation Safety Board agrees, placing the need to improve runway safety at the top of its Most Wanted List. TK Kallenbach, Honeywell s Vice President of Marketing & Product Management reinforced this concern in his testimony before the U.S. House of Representatives last February, The airport surface is one of the highest risk environments in aviation today. This is not some potential crisis looming on the distant horizon it is a problem right now. Boeing s Trampus provided perspective on what aircraft manufacturers are doing to address the issue. A combination of pilot training, equipment retrofi t and improvement of situational awareness technologies was the key to reducing risk, and was a responsibility shared by manufacturers, airlines and other industry infl uencers. Concluding the webinar, Don Bateman discussed the costs of runway incursions, noting that from 1996 to 2007, 227 accidents had resulted in 728 deaths and $11 billion in losses. Bateman also presented an overview of Honeywell s Runway Awareness Advisory System (RAAS) as an example of the company s long-term commitment to safety. Currently installed on 1,700 aircraft, RAAS is a software upgrade to existing Mark V or Mark VII Enhanced Ground Proximity Warning Systems (EGPWS), or as a module in aircraft equipped with the Honeywell s Primus Epic system. RAAS is available to nearly 95% of air transport and business aviation aircraft. It s a simple software upgrade that can be added to aircraft already in service for less than $6 per flight hour on business aviation aircraft. Any way we can help improve safety in the aerospace industry with ongoing dialogue and effective solutions is going to benefi t us all. RAAS is another piece of our overall commitment to safety at Honeywell. You are going to continue to see a series products from Honeywell that increase pilot awareness and air traffi c safety. Safety is at the heart of what we do, said Kallenbach. More than 450 people registered for the webinar. Participants had the option of attending the live session or viewing it on demand from Air Transport World s web site. To learn more about RAAS for business aviation, go to runwaysafety TECH CORNER A Few Tips about EEI The E-Engine Interface (EEI) may be a little complicated, but if used correctly, it can make life a whole lot easier. Verifying GMT Time and Date for EEI Data When downloading EEI data from the engine, the user is required to verify that the PC/ Laptop is using the correct time and date. This must be completed by the user before proceeding with the EEI download. It s important to ensure that this information is correct in order to match the EEI download time with the EEI data being downloaded. EEI Downloads One File vs. Two Files When downloading EEI data from the HTF7000 Engine, the download may consist of one or two fi les associated with each engine. The HTF7000 control system manages the EEI downloads by comparing the data to ECU A and ECU B. If the data is identical, there will be one fi le downloaded for the engine. If there is a difference between the download data between ECU A and ECU B, then there will be two fi les. Each fi le name will be appended with A and B respectively. During the download, EEI will provide a notifi cation to the user when two fi les are created.

4 Reprinted with permission from Plane & Pilot Apex Edge Series KSN 770 Bendix/King strikes back with its Integrated Communication Navigation Display By John D. Ruley For many years, Bendix/King (a division of Honeywell) had a virtual lock on avionics in general aviation (GA). Get in a 20-year-old airplane with a panel that hasn t been upgraded and you ll probably find at least one Bendix/King NAV/COM, ADF, transponder or audio panel (on many airplanes, you ll find a complete Bendix/King radio stack). Even today, many used airplane ads list King panel or King radios among their selling points. right, he said. It includes graphical flight planning based on the flight management systems from our bizjet products, but it s oriented for single-pilot users. And our product aesthetics are great it s a modern-style unit that s functional in the cockpit. One key feature is the KSN 770 s cursor control device, with which, according to Badie, You can point to any waypoint on the flight plan, click on it and click again to select functions like holding patterns. It s also used for scroll and pan, and the cursor shows you where it s focused, be it on the thumbnail or on the main display. It makes operation as intuitive as possible. With the introduction of Garmin s color GPS/NAV/COM, the GNS 430, all of this began to change. The lure of bright-color displays and the ability to integrate all NAV/ COM functions Some competing into a single unit products have been proved compelling criticized as difficult to most of the to learn, based on GA community. the excessive use of Bendix/King programmable soft responded with keys. Honeywell the color KLN 94 is well aware of GPS, but it lacked that issue. Badie Garmin s integrated says, We ve tried NAV/COM functions to strike a balance and didn t make The KSN 770 displays GPS, WAAS and NAV/COM functions on a 5.7-inch display that offers between what s 640x480-pixel resolution on an intuitive interface. much of a market easy to learn and impact. We re you look at ads for newer airplanes, Garmin panel is a huge using a combination of hard keys on the left, context-sensitive selling point. hybrid keys on the bottom and soft keys on the right for less When I mentioned all this to Clark Badie, Honeywell s product regularly used functions. You don t need to go through threemarketing manager for crew interface aftermarket products, he and four-deep functions, which is nice. And he confirmed that didn t disagree. But he informed me that Honeywell thinks it has a software simulator will be available for the product when it s a product that will reverse the situation: The Apex Edge Series launched this fall. KSN 770 provides GPS with WAAS and digitally tuned NAV/COM Bendix/King has been advertising the KSN 770 s digital NAV/ functions on a 5.7-inch diagonal display offering 640x480-pixel COM as a major feature, and I asked if this meant that it could resolution (four times higher than the Garmin GNS 430). The support VDL Mode 2, as called for by the FAA s NextGen national unique, intuitive user interface features optional 16-watt transmitter airspace plan. Badie responded in the negative: Currently it s a power (10 watts is standard) and is compatible with a variety digitally enhanced VHF communication radio, intended to provide of weather avoidance and traffic products, offering integrated the best voice quality using the same technology as our Primus moving-map and terrain-awareness functions. 5 KSN 770 continued from previous page The KSN 770 will support a wide range of external weather sources, including a radar transceiver module, Stormscope and XM Satellite Weather via Bendix/King s KDR 610 datalink module. Badie also reported that Honeywell is looking at a more robust set of interfaces that could handle a wider range of third-party weather sources. For traffic avoidance, the unit is compatible with many options, including TCAS 1 and 2 and Mode S/TIS. an idea of how much shop time will be required for installation, but Badie agreed that it would probably be comparable to the time required for other advanced multifunction devices. I asked what kinds of indicators the KSN 770 could be used with, and Badie said, The 770 has a wide range of analog and digital CDI and HSI outputs, which are pretty standard. If they use standard signals they should be supported. Looking ahead, I asked if the KSN 770 could be upgraded to work with Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast (ADS-B), which the FAA plans to phase in over the next decade, ultimately as a replacement for ATC surveillance radar. (For more on this, read Making ADS-B Work.) Badie said the KSN 770 will have hardware hooks to support either 1,090 MHz analog mode, digital universal access transceiver (UAT) mode or possibly both, though a software upgrade will be required to enable ADS-B operation. Honeywell is marketing the KSN 770 as part of its Bendix/King Apex Edge Series, offering the potential to create a complete glass panel. I wondered if an owner could install the KSN 770 in the radio stack first, then add the KFD 840 PFD later. Badie believed this would be possible and added that the combination of the two units provides a matched panel set. No specific features, however, are required from one to work with the other, so buyers could combine the KSN 770 with a different PFD, or the KFD 840 with a different MFD and radio stack. The KSN 770 is intended as a retrofit item in existing radio stacks. Regarding whether any wiring could be reused, Badie said, That depends on what s in the panel if you re installing a center stack or MFD for the first time, you ll have to wire it from scratch, but if you re upgrading an existing stack, you can probably reuse much of the existing wiring. The company is working with dealers to get Honeywell Supports Operators at the 2008 Olympic Games The list price of the KSN 770 is $13,995. Honeywell expects to begin taking orders this fall. It will be TSO d for IFR operation and certificated through an STC with approved model list. 6 TPE331: The Importance of NTS System Check Preventing mis-riggings or other problems with the Negative Torque System (NTS) can be easily avoided with various checks, according to the latest Operating Information Letters. In the event of an unintentional inflight shut down or if the flight crew deems it necessary to secure the engine in flight, these systems must function properly to ensure the engine is safely secured. A malfunction in these systems could result in engine damage and diffi culty in controlling the aircraft. Operating Information Letters OI331-20, 21, 22, released in May 2008, emphasize the importance of the system checks, feather valve checks and fuel shut-off checks contained within engine maintenance manuals. These functional tests help detect possible mis-rigging or other problems with the NTS system, feather valve or fuel shutoff valve. These letters are not intended to be used in lieu of the applicable engine manuals. Honeywell recommends performing the pre-flight NTS functional checks as specifi ed in the applicable engine manuals and aircraft manuals. If any anomalies are noted during any of the checks, corrective action should be taken prior to flight. LF507-1F Fan Overspeed Discussion Did you know that the Aircraft Maintenance Manual requires that specifi c inspections must be conducted if fan speed limits are exceeded? Those limits are an N1 speed either greater than 100 percent or greater than 97 percent for over 10 seconds. When the 97 percent limit is only exceeded by a small amount, less than 2.5 percent, the actual N1 may have been below 97 percent if the compensating resistor was of sufficient value to negate the exceedance. Also, if the engine control switched from auto to manual at high power prior to the exceedance, the N1 would have continued to be a compensated value until the Power Lever was retarded to less than 35 degrees. For these types of exceedances the compensating resistor value should be checked in the log book and the compensated N1 calculated to determine the actual N1 level.
