1 Use & Description The R.I.S. (Remote Intelligent Sensor) is housed in an environmentally sealed (NEMA 4), tamperresistant enclosure with an external membrane switch control panel. The unit operates on DC current from an external power supply, and has internal battery backup which enables the RIS to operate four to seven hours in case of a power outage. A large, easy-to-read LCD on the RIS monitors gas concentration. It features a strobing visual alarm that is triggered when a preset alarm level is exceeded. The LCD also shows self-diagnostic data such as unit readiness, alarm set level, battery current and charge voltage, percent of sampling tape remaining and fault situations. The Remote Intelligent Sensor s modular internal design makes maintenance quick and easy. Many system faults can be readily identified using the unit s test mode. An internal terminal strip provides a connection for the external power supply, an audible alarm relay and analog output. An internal card cage allows the unit to accept a number of optional upgrade plug-in printed circuit cards for enhanced performance and capabilities. Typically, up to eight hours of sampling data can be stored in the Remote Intelligent Sensor s internal memory. This allows personnel to review data over the course of an entire workday to pinpoint when and where toxic gas concentrations might be occurring. The unit calculates eight hour and 15 minute PNA values and can be set to alarm TWA and STEL values. A Memory and Printer option gives the RIS the capability to send its output to a printer on demand or on a regular, timed basis. This option enables the unit to store data for the last seven-day sampling period. The printout will automatically include the eight hour and 15 minute TWAs based on the last data available. By using the 4-20mA output, it is possible to network RIS units into a multi-point monitoring system, supervised by a central controller and reporting to an IBM or other compatible desk-top computer. This capability enables personnel to remotely interrogate, monitor and control the Remote Intelligent Sensor, providing instant access to gas monitoring information in all parts of a facility.
