The systems at OCSD will be reviewed from both the hardware and software perspectives, with the goal that the audience should take away an understanding of process control objectives at OCSD. Speaker The Orange County Sanitation District (OCSD) operates the third largest wastewater agency west of the Mississippi River. For over 50 years, we have safely collected, treated and disposed of and or reclaimed the wastewater generated by 2.5 million people living and working in central and northwestern Orange County. For more information go to the OCSD website About the Speaker. February 21st was no exception. After moving our regularly scheduled meeting date back a week due to Valentine s Day, we weren t sure how many of our members would be able to attend. Our concern was unwarranted as we managed to fill the room for Ory Selzer s (CCI) excellent presentation on challenges in selection of control valves for process and utility steam service. Also, thanks to Ralph Forte (CCI) for sponsoring the meeting. Analysis Division Educational Seminar: Thanks go to John Querido, Sandra Krauthamer, Paul Otterman and John Gong for setting up the Analysis Division educational seminar on Process Analyzer Sample Systems held on Saturday, February 24th. Also thanks to Hiten Dalal for coordinating the event location at Newtech Resources in Irvine. Robert Sherman (CIRCOR) presented an incredible amount of material and can t I remember a more practical and informative seminar on this topic. He was able to point out many of the typical things that go wrong at installations where the analyzer is usually the first to device to get the blame. The vast majority of the time it s actually something that was installed wrong, never maintained, or just misapplied in the design of the sample system. Robert also pointed out how you need to think of the sample system as a small process unit, and that it should be designed accordingly. The good news was that most sample system failures can be fixed once you identify the problem. Robert also covered the recent progress of NeSSI (New Sampling/Sensor Initiative) and the development and availability of new modular components and substrates. If you haven t heard of this initiative before, I would encourage you to do a web search for NeSSI, and check it out. Future Educational Seminar: Just a heads-up, thanks to Don Zee, the next educational seminar is in the works and will cover Microsoft Vista-Office. If the response to this presentation is anything like the session we had for XP a few years ago, I would suggest getting your ticket early. We probably had close to one hundred people at that event. We are currently researching venues that can handle that level of participation. We are targeting a date in late April or May, so stay tuned. 3 Message from the DVP What is your ISA IQ? Have you ever bought a candy bar? Of course you have. Now, did you only eat 10% of it and threw away the rest? What about the money in your wallet? Do you spend 10% of it and throw away the rest? That would be really stupid huh? Are you eating all or your ISA candy? The ISA team is currently working on over 15 new initiatives that are a direct benefit to you, the member. These initiatives are based around ISA s five core competencies, Standards, Certification, Education & Training, Publishing, and Conferences & Exhibits. Did you know that all standards are free to each member? Did you know that you can get over 2500 technical papers for free? How about the free webinars? An enormous well spring of knowledge is now yours for free! All you have to do is take that first step and take a drink. Like the old wise saying goes a wise man can lead a horse to water, but he can t make him drink. I ask you, do you see yourself as the stubborn horse or the wise man. Why are we ISA members? We are all here because of the value that ISA brings to our careers and professional development. PS I actually received four, count them, four replies from my last column! I want to thank those who replied back to me. It s nice to know that at least four of you are reading this. For my next column I would like to hear back from any of you about how ISA has helped you in your careers or in other ways. In matters of style swim with the current in matters of principle stand like a rock. Thomas Jefferson. As always, please let me know if you like my messages or think that I m way off track. Also please let me know if you have any questions, concerns, comments, etc. You can reach me at or jbingham@aesglobal.com. Product Application Notes Flare stack and pipeline applications In accordance with the Kyoto Protocol of 1997, the total emissions of greenhouse gasses are now monitored more closely than ever. Therefore the need for reliable instrumentation to monitor emissions and prevent accidental gas releases is now of paramount importance. In the case of a natural gas pipeline or a flare stack, the volume of gas that could be released in the event of a leak or valve malfunction is significant in terms of plant safety, environmental impact and material waste. Thermal dispersion flow/level/interface switches, such as the Kayden 800 Series, are used extensively in flare stack and pipeline applications. Common applications are flow monitoring and leak detection/early warning devices monitoring the PSV or rupture disk. Customers using the Kayden 800 Series switches in flares have found that the increased sensitivity and digital repeatability of the Kayden switches allows them to perform their required system tests with a reduced volume of gas. Thus less gas is consumed during tests and emissions are significantly reduced. Thermal dispersion flow switches work well as leak detection devices because of their ability to detect very small changes in flow rates (or very low flows) as would be found if a PSV lifts or a pin hole develops in a rupture disk. To perform well in a remote pipeline application or as an alarm device in a flare stack, an instrument must overcome these common shortcomings: difficult or limited field adjustments; false flow indications. For more info about Kayden Instruments see Custom Control Sensors, Inc... Pressure and Temperature Switches 10 ISA Newsletters, Southern District 11 March 2007

12 Data Communications Ultra-wideband wireless communications By Dr. Kei Hao, Central Automation The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has defined Ultra-wideband to any wireless communication technology that utilizes a bandwidth larger than 500 MHz or 25% of the center frequency. This large bandwidth leads to new possibilities for both communications and precise positioning applications. Ultra-Wideband (UWB) wireless communication systems have generated intense interests due to its potential for providing pervasive wireless connectivity. This potential is due to the fact that UWB may provide very high bit rate, low-cost, and low-power wireless communication for a wide variety of systems, such as high speed wireless USB, wireless monitors, and digital camcorders. Another factor that enhances interest in UWB is that the Federal Communications Commission has recently allocated 7.5~GHz of spectrum for unlicensed commercial UWB communication systems. Dr. Kei Hao received the B.S. degree in electrical engineering from La Universidad de la Republica del Oriental del Uruguay, Montevideo, Uruguay in 1998, the M.S. degree in electrical engineering from the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee, in 2001 and Ph.D degree in electrical engineering from the University of Wisconsin Madison, in From 1998 to 2000, he was an Electrical Engineer with the South America Division, Schlumberger. While with the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, he was a Research Assistant with the Wireless and Signal Processing Laboratory and Center for Intelligent Maintenance Systems. Currently, he is an Electrical Engineer/Automation Analyst with Central Automation, Inc located in Bakersfield, California. His expertises are communications, wireless communications, and automation systems. Dr. Hao and John A. Gubner co-authored a white paper Titled A Point- Process of Spencer s Space-Time Extension of the IEEE a UWB Channel Model. Check the WTS 2007 (Wireless Telecommunications Symposium) website to find more information on attending this Symposium. A good opportunity to Dig Deeper into wireless technology. 13 ISA District 2007 District Leadership Conference by Joe Bingham, District Vice President This year s District Leadership Conference will be held April 20-22, 2007, at the Disneyland Hotel and is going to be HUGE! Not only are we having a joint meeting with Districts 8, 9, and 10, but we will have the honor of having the Executive Committee their as well. Also there is no cost this year to attend the conference. It s critically important that each section send as many of its new leaders as possible. I know some of you may have some financial limitations. Please let me know what these are and maybe I can assist you from the DVP general fund. Also, we will have Mark Adams, as the guest speaker again. Anyone interested in attending the conference should contact their Section President for information. Presidents should RSVP how many of your board members can make it as soon as possible as we have only blocked off so many rooms for District 11.
