14 Lighting in It s Still All About LED You might feel like you re in the minority if you haven t yet used LED lighting in your workplace or at home. But the truth is that we still have a long way to go before LED is the preeminent light source in the United States. So what are the best opportunities for LED retrofits? How much is already installed and where? What is the outlook and timetable? What are some of the roadblocks to adoption? This presentation, by Bob Preston, LC, Energy & Lighting Specialist with Capital Electric, will examine those questions and more. Solid state lighting is the present and future. This opening discussion will provide the framework and help set the stage for the rest of the seminar presentations. Exterior Lighting - Avoiding Mistakes & Maximizing Performance When it comes to LED, it s what you may not know that can create challenges. This fascinating presentation, by Eric Gibson, Director of Commercial Outdoor Lighting with Acuity Brands, will deliver some of the most useful and pertinent information available on exterior LED lighting that will help you evaluate and select the correct lighting solution. In addition to detailing safety, security and aesthetic considerations that are critical to every installation, this presentation will use handson examples to explain why, when it comes to comparing traditional lighting sources, such as HID, with LED, all lumens are definitely not equal. Knowing why this is and how to use it to your advantage is the key to getting the best lighting, energy, and cost benefits possible. This is a notto-be-missed presentation. Hiding In Plain Sight - Not So Obvious Characteristics of LED Lighting The rapid adoption of LED lighting has resulted in a renewed examination and focus on various characteristics of lighting that have always been with us, but are now more critical to understand and consider when evaluating light sources and applications. This presentation will delve into aspects of lighting such as Color Rendering, Color Temperature, Environmental Considerations, Life Expectancy, and Visual Characteristics, specifically Glare. Actual demonstrations of glare, CCT and Color Rendering will accompany this presentation. It s Not Only About Saving Energy Other Benefits of LED LED s main claim to fame, up to now, is its tremendous energy saving potential. That has been the catalyst fueling the meteoric rise of this technology. However, we re beginning to discover other aspects of LED lighting that aren t specifically related to energy savings. And we re still learning what the impacts might be and how to harness any potential benefits. This presentation, by Bob Preston, will highlight some of these emerging areas, such as the human impacts of LED lighting, Circadian disruption, and indoor horticultural lighting applications. Energy savings is still the primary reason for the rapid rise of LED. This presentation reveals that s not the whole story. 14 CapitalTristate will not be held liable for typos or misprints. 30 10 WAYS TO GET YOUR PROGRAM STARTED If you are not quite ready to implement a complete safety and health program, here are some simple steps you can take to get started. Completing these steps will give you a solid base from which to take on some of the more structured actions you may want to include in your program Establish safety and health as a core value. Tell your workers that making sure they finish the day and go home safely is the way you do business. Assure them that you will work with them to find and fix any hazards that could injure them or make them sick. Lead by example. Practice safe behaviors yourself and make safety part of your daily conversations with workers. Implement a reporting system. Develop and communicate a simple procedure for workers to report any injuries, illnesses, incidents (including near misses/close calls), hazards, or safety and health concerns without fear of retaliation. Include an option for reporting hazards or concerns anonymously. Provide training. Train workers on how to identify and control hazards in the workplace, as well as report injuries, illnesses, and near misses. Conduct inspections. Inspect the workplace with workers and ask them to identify any activity, piece of equipment, or materials that concern them. Use checklists to help identify problems. Collect hazard control ideas. Ask workers for ideas on improvements and follow up on their suggestions. Provide them time during work hours, if necessary, to research solutions. Implement hazard controls. Assign workers the task of choosing, implementing, and evaluating the solutions they come up with. Address emergencies. Identify foreseeable emergency scenarios and develop instructions on what to do in each case. Meet to discuss these procedures and post them in a visible location in the workplace. Seek input on workplace changes. Before making significant changes to the workplace, work organization, equipment, or materials, consult with workers to identify potential safety or health issues. Make improvements to the program. Set aside a regular time to discuss safety and health issues, with the goal of identifying ways to improve the program CapitalTristate will not be held liable for typos or misprints. CapitalTristate reserves the right to cancel or postpone these events at any time at its sole discretion.
